Henry TULETT (1827-?)

and Harriet LAKER (c1833-1903)

St. George, West Grinstead, circa 1910 - from http://www.westsussexpast.org.uk/pictures/index.htmlHenry Tulett and Harriet Laker married on 30 October 1852 at the parish church of St. George in West Grinstead, Sussex.  (They were not my direct ancestors, but my mother's maiden name was Tullett and so I am interested in all Tullett families, just to make sure I'm on the right track with my own.)

Henry Tulit was baptised on 3 March 1827 in West Grinstead, at which time his father was a labourer of West Grinstead.  He was the son of William Tulet (1799-1878) and Charlotte Woodman (c1802-1886).  When the 1841 census was recorded he was 14 years old and the eldest of his siblings living at home.

Harriet Laker was born about 1833-5 in West Grinstead.  She was the daughter of James Laker (c1784-?) and Ruth Merit (c1795-?).  She died aged 70 years and her death was registered in the name of Harriett Tullett in the first quarter of 1903 in the East Preston registration district.  When the 1841 census was recorded she was 6 years old and living with her parents and siblings at Buckels in West Grinstead.  Her father was then an agricultural labourer.  Her parents were still living at Buckels in 1851, but Harriot Laker was then an 18 year old general servant living at Hookland in Shipley, the home of William Browne and his wife Caroline and their 5 children.

When the 1861 census was recorded the couple and their 3 children were living in Broad Lane in West Grinstead and Henry was an agricultural labourer.  In 1871 Henry, Harriott and their 6 children were living at Wilenwick (that's what it looks like) in West Grinstead and Henry was a farm labourer.  The previous property on the enumerators route was inhabited by the family of John Tulett and his wife Diana.  The 1881 census records that the couple and their 4 children were living at Hookshill in West Grinstead.  By 1891 Henry and Harriett had moved to Jolesfield in West Grinstead and were living there with 3 children and a boarder, 8 year old scholar Henry Tullett who was most probably their grandson.  The couple were living alone at Jolesfield when the 1901 census was recorded.  Henry was then a 74 year old gardner/labourer and Harriet was 68 years old

Henry Tulett and Harriet Laker had 11 known children:
