Alfred TULETT (1852-1931)

and Elizabeth BURTON (1857-1944)

Alfred Tullett and Elizabeth Burton married on 24 August 1873 in Nuthurst, Sussex.  (They were not my direct ancestors.)

Alfred Tulett was baptised on 14 March 1852 in Cowfold, Sussex, at which time his father was a labourer.  He was the son of James Tulett (1810-1890) and Elizabeth Moore (1819-1854).  He died on 1 December 1931 at Sparrow Hall, Lower Beeding, Sussex.  When the 1861 census was recorded he was 9 years old.  In 1871 he was an 18 year old agricultural labourer and living with his parents.

Elizabeth Ann Burton was born about 1857 in Brighton, Sussex.  She was the daughter of William Henry Burton (1822-1902) and Ann Kenward (c1830-?).  Elizabeth died on 29 October 1944 at 2 Mill Lane, Lower Beeding, Sussex.  When the 1861 census was recorded she was 4 years old and living with her parents and siblings in the home of her father's 70 year old unmarried Aunt Ann Leany at Townings in Wivelsfield, Sussex.

When the 1881 census was recorded the couple and 2 children were living at North Field in Cowfold.  Alfred was then a 28 year old agricultural labourer and Elizabeth was 24.  Also with the family on census night were 2 lodgers, James Hobbs and Thomas Denyer who were both unmarried 21 year old agricultural labourers.

In 1891, the couple and 6 children were living at North Fields.  Alfred was then a 39 year old agricultural labourer and Elizabeth was 34.

The couple and 7 children were still living at North Fields when the 1901 census was recorded.  Alfred was then a 48 year old stockman on a farm and Elizabeth was said to be 46.

Alfred Tullett and Elizabeth Burton had 10 known children:

William was born on 3 May 1884 at Eastlands, Warninglid in Slaugham.  He was the son of Charles Martin (1857-1937) and Sarah Straton (1861-1934).  His mother registered his birth on 9 June 1884, and at the time of his birth his father was a farmer's carter.  His paternal grandparents were Richard Martin (1816-?) and Lucy Carter (1824-?).  William died aged 89 years on 11 September 1973 at Princes Alexandra Hospital in South Brisbane and was cremated at the Mount Thompson Crematorium on 13 September 1973.  When the 1891 census was recorded, William was a 6 year old scholar living with his parents at Copyhold in Slaugham.  His father was then a shepherd.  The previous property on the census enumerators route was Eastlands which was occupied by the family of Walter Tullett.

William and Edith's ashes were placed in a double niche, T39, Section 45 of Columbarium 8 at Mount Thompson.
