Richard TUGWELL (1690-1768)

and Judith THORPE (1696-1777)

Richard Tugwell and Judith Thorpe married on 23 January 1723/4 in Buxted, Sussex.  At the time of their marriage Richard was of Warnham and Judith of Buxted.  (They were not my direct ancestors.  Judith was the niece of my 8x Great Grandfather, Richard Thorpe.)

Richard Tugwell was born on 7 March 1689/90 and baptised on 8 April 1690 in Warnham, Sussex.  He was the son of Richard Tugwell (1669-?) and Ann.  Richard was buried on 23 March 1768 in Buxted.

Judith Thorpe was baptised on 27 September 1696 in Buxted, nearly 7 months after the death of her father.  Her mother's name was not recorded in the baptism register.  She was the daughter of Benedict Thorpe (1666-1696) and Anne or Mary Poolly.  Judith was buried on 4 February 1777 in Buxted.

Before her marriage she had an illegitimate son:

  1. Benjamin Thorpe was baptised on 17 September 1721 in Buxted.

Richard Tugwell and Judith Thorpe had 3 known children:

  1. Mary Tugwell was baptised on 7 June 1724 in Buxted.

  2. Richard Tugwell was baptised on 5 March 1726/7 in Buxted.  He was buried on 7 August 1803 in Buxted.  His will was dated 1 March 1792 and he was then of Maresfield.  His estate was valued at less than 300 and he requested to be buried close to his wife.  He left half his estate to his daughter Elizabeth, 5 to his daughter Mary and the remainder to be invested for Mary.  He appointed his brother Johan and his son William, a cordwainer of Glynd as trustees.

Richard married Elizabeth Winson on 4 April 1749 in Buxted

Elizabeth was buried on 9 February 1792 in Buxted.

Richard and Elizabeth had 2 known children:

    1. Mary Tugwell was baptised on 31 December 1749 in Buxted.  Mary married Charles Nicolas by banns on 12 May 1774 in Buxted.  She was then of Buxted and he was from Chailey.

    2. Elizabeth Tugwell was baptised on 6 May 1753 in Buxted.  Elizabeth married Richard Walter by banns on 29 April 1782 in Buxted.

  3. John Tugwell was baptised on 29 May 1730 in Buxted.  He married Elizabeth Skinner in 1751.  (They have their own page.)
