Thomas TOWN (1737-?)

and Sarah SHORT (c1740-?)

Thomas Town and Sarah Short married on 25 December 1759 in Steyning, Sussex.  (They were not my direct ancestors.  Thomas was the nephew of my 7x great grandmother Elizabeth Cook.)

Thomas Town was baptised on 12 June 1737 in Steyning.  He was the son of John Town (1686-?) and Ann Cook (1702-?).

Sarah Short's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  She may have been baptised on 12 October 1746 in Thakeham, Sussex, the daughter of Henry Short and Sarah Harris, but unless she was baptised as a child, rather than as an infant, she would only have been 13 years old at marriage.

Thomas Town and Sarah Short had 7 known children:

  1. Sarah Town was baptised on 4 April 1762 in Steyning.  She was buried there on 28 July 1842.

  2. John Town was baptised on 8 July 1764 in Steyning.  He was buried there on 8 March 1852.

John married Martha Smart by banns on 3 April 1793 in Brighton, Sussex.  He was then a bachelor and she a spinster and they were both of Brighton.

Martha was born about 1763 in the Steyning and buried there on 11 November 1848.

John and Martha had the following children:

    1. Charlotte Town was baptised on 30 June 1799 in Steyning.

    2. Caroline Town was baptised on 3 May 1801 in Steyning.  She died in about 1878.

    3. Thomas William Town was baptised on 2 November 1803 in Steyning.  He died/buried on 21 February 1881.

    4. William Smart Town was baptised on 5 July 1807 in Steyning.

  3. Elizabeth Town was baptised on 2 August 1767 in Steyning.  She may have married William Witten on 11 February 1786 in Steyning.

  4. Ann Town was baptised on 1 July 1770 in Steyning.  She may have married William Botting on 17 November 1789 in Steyning.

  5. Thomas Town was baptised on 26 April 1772 in Steyning.  He married Jane Langley in 1794.  (They have their own page.)

  6. Mary Town was baptised on 4 March 1774 in Steyning.

  7. William Town was baptised on 17 March 1776 in Steyning.  He was buried in April 1813.

William married Ann Peacock on 13 February 1804 in Steyning.

Ann was baptised on 23 ? 1783 in Steyning and was the daughter of John Peacock and Sarah Emery.  She was buried in Steyning in July 1812.

William and Ann had the following children:

    1. Sarah Town was baptised on 29 April 1810 in Steyning.

    2. John Town was baptised on 12 January 1812 in Steyning.
