My Tourle Ancestors

A 9x Great Grandmother, married as Hannah Tworle in 1657 Willingdon, Sussex, to Henry Beck.  She was most likely baptised in 1638 Chiddingly, Sussex as Hannah Tourle, daughter of William Tourle and Sarah Sixworth.  When William and Sarah married in 1634 Eastbourne, Sussex, he was said to be William Tourle, junior, therefore, I  assume his father was also a William.

The Sussex Family History Group's marriage index records the following possible marriages for William, senior:

30 August 1596 in Eastbourne, William Toyrle and Margaret Jackson

14 August 1600 in Eastbourne, William Toyrle and Margery Dowman

4 February 1611/2 in Folkington, William Tourle and Alice Dontone

18 July 1613 in Eastbourne, William Toyrle and Grace Florence

Other Tourle families

Many thanks to Lin Farnes for passing on the following (I have also added a little):

John Tourle may have been born about 1732.  He may have married Mary Cooper by licence on 19 July 1772 at St. John sub Castro in Lewes, Sussex.  The witnesses to the marriage were John Madgwick and Robert Moon.  Their marriage licence was issued by the Archdeaconry of Lewes on 18 July 1772 and recorded that John was a 40 year old bachelor of the parish of St. John sub Castro, whilst Mary was a spinster aged 21 of the same place.  Surety for the licence was provided by John himself and John Madgwick a mercer of Lewes.

John and Mary were the parents of:

  1. William Knight Tourle was baptised on 20 June 1774.  He married Sarah Ann Best by licence on 21 January 1807 in Buxted, Sussex.  Their marriage licence was issued on 21 January 1807 by the Archdeaconry of Lewes, which recorded that William was a bachelor of Southease and Sarah a spinster of Buxted.  Surety for the licence was provided by William himself and William Madgwick a grocer of Lewes.  Sarah Ann was baptised on 19 March 1784.  They were the parents of:

    1. Judith Tourle was baptised on 1 January 1819 in Buxted.  She was the mother of:

      1. Henry Knight Tourle married Kitty Ann Seymore (Catherine).  They were the parents of:

        1. Ada Louisa Tourle married Richard Farnes.  He was the son of Richard Farnes.

    2. Phobe Anne Tourle was baptised on 31 December 1820 in Buxted.

    3. John Verral Tourle was baptised on 18 August 1822 in Buxted.

    4. Matilda Tourle was baptised on 17 October 1824 in Buxted.
