William TOMSETT (1635-?)

and Ann HASLEDEN (c1635-?)

William Tomsett and Ann Hasleden were my 9x Great Grandparents.  They married by licence on 13 April 1658 in Frant, Sussex.  His name was recorded in the marriage register as William Tomset and hers as Ann Casleden.  Their marriage licence was issued in March 1657/8 in Lewes and recorded that William Tomsett was a husbandman of Rotherfield and Ann Hasleden as spinster of Frant.

William Tomson was baptised on 31 January 1634/5 in Mayfield, Sussex.  He was the son of John Tompson (c1610-?) and Susan Manser (c1610-?).

Ann Hasleden's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  Might she have been a daughter of William Haysellden and Alice Asheby (1606-?)?

William Tomsett and Ann Hasleden may have had 11 known children:

1. William Tompsett may have been part of this family and have been born about 1658 (as per the IGI).

   William married Margaret Cornford on 13 July 1683 in Burwash, Sussex.

   Margaret Tomson, widow was buried in Burwash on 16 December 1721.

   William and Margaret had 3 known children:

   1. Thomas Tompsett was baptised on 27 January 1683/4 in Burwash.  His mother's name was recorded as Mary against his baptism.

   2. William Tompsett was baptised on 14 November 1686 in Burwash.  A William Tomson was buried on 5 August 1722 in Burwash.

      As William Tomsett I believe he married Jane Longley on 1 April 1716 in Burwash.  (It has been suggested that the William born in Burwash married Jane Hilton by licence on 3 May 1711 in Slaugham, Sussex.  The marriage licence was issued by the Archdeaconry of Lewes and stated that William Thompsett was a husbandman of Lindfield, whilst Jane was a spinster of Slaugham.  If this is the case, who was the William Tomsett who married Jane Longley in Burwash?  And why would Burwash William be of Lindfield when he married?)

      Jane Tompsett, widow was buried on 14 March 1749 in Burwash.

      William and Jane had 4 known children:

      1. Elizabeth Tomsett was baptised on 10 February 1716/7 in Burwash.  Might she have been buried as Elizabeth Tomsett on 24 February 1733/4 in Burwash?

      2. Ruth Tomson was baptised on 8 February 1718/9 in Burwash and buried there on 11 August 1721.

      3. Margaret Tomson was baptised on 2 October 1720 in Burwash and buried there on 1 September 1721.

      4. Ann Tomson daughter of William was buried on 16 April 1723 in Burwash.

   3. John Tompsett was baptised on 29 November 1688 in Burwash.

2. John Thompson, my 8x Great Grandfather, was baptised on 16 March 1661/2 in Burwash.  He married Susan Cord in 1686.  (They have their own page.)

3. Richard Tomsett was baptised on 10 July 1664 in Burwash.

4. Thomas Tompset was baptised on 8 April 1666 in Burwash.

   As Thomas Tompsett he may have married Mary Smale on 11 June 1689 in Wadhurst, Sussex.

5. Elizabeth Tompset was born about 1668.

   Elizabeth may have married William Cruttenden on 24 April 1688 in Burwash.  She was then said to have been of Brightling.  However, it would seem she had a younger sister also named Elizabeth.  Therefore, the Elizabeth born in 1668 may have died young and another Elizabeth married William.

6. James Tompset was baptised on 14 November 1669 in Burwash.

7. Margaret Tompsett may have been part of this family have been born about 1670.

   Margaret had an illegitimate son:

   1. Stephen Tompsett was baptised on 10 May 1693 in Burwash.  He may have been buried as Stephen Thompson on 12 February 1756 or as Stephen Tomsett on 18 February 1761 in Burwash.  Another Stephen Tompsett was born in Burwash in 1703.

8. Ann Tompsett may have been part of this family and have been born about 1674.

   Ann married Thomas Croucher by licence on 15 January 1694/5 in Dallington, Sussex.  Their marriage licence was issued by the Archdeaconry of Lewes and was also dated 15 January 1694/5.  It stated that Thomas was of Brightling whilst Ann was of Burwash.

9. Edward Tompsett was baptised on 30 April 1674 in Burwash.

10. Elizabeth Tompset was baptised on 13 November 1675 in Burwash.

11. Stephen Tompsett was baptised on 14 December 1677 in Burwash.
