John TOMPSETT
(1691-1723)
and Elizabeth WOOD (1693-?)

John Tomsun
and Elizabeth
Wood
were my 7x Great Grandparents. (Click
here to
see their place in my pedigree chart.) They
married on 11 August 1713 at the parish church of St. Thomas à Becket in Brightling, Sussex. He was then of
Burwash, Sussex.
John Tompsett was baptised on 8 September 1691 in Burwash. He
was the son of
John
Tompsett (1662-?) and
Susan Cord
(1661-?). He was most probably buried on 10 June 1723 in Burwash, by
the name of John Tomson.
Elizabeth
Atwood was baptised on 12 March 1692/3 in Burwash. She was the
daughter of
Thomas Wood
(1660-?) and
Elizabeth
Bew. Note, she was baptised as Atwood, as were some of her
siblings, but her father was married as Wood. An Elizabeth
Tomson was buried on 10 May 1753 and an Elizabeth Thompson,
widow on 4 October 1764, both in Burwash. I'm not sure which is
Elizabeth's burial, as on 16 May 1747, a John Thompson
married Elizabeth Tench in the Fleet Prison. He was a
bachelor and weaver of Burwash and she a spinster. This younger couple
don't seem to have had any children baptised in Burwash.
The 1747 Window Tax assessment for Burwash recorded that widow Tomset and
widow Boorman had 9 windows, but as they were poor they were exempt from
paying the tax. This would seem to indicate that mother and daughter
was living together, as the daughter, Naomi was widowed in 1742 and didn't
remarry until 1752.
John
Tompsett and Elizabeth Wood had 5 known children:
-
Naomi
Tompsett, my 6x Great Grandmother, was baptised on 11 July 1714
in Burwash . She married twice, firstly to
James
Boorman in 1735 and then to
Richard
Fleming in 1752. (They have their own page.)
-
Mary Tompsett
was baptised on 7 October 1716 in Burwash. Might she have been
buried as Mary Tompsett on 18 November 1731 in Burwash?
Or as Mary Tomset did she marry George Duke
by banns on 11 July 1743 in Battle? They were both then of Battle.
-
Elizabeth
Tomsett was baptised on 2 February 1717/8 in Burwash. Elizabeth
daughter of widow Tomson was buried on 1 December 1728 in Burwash.
-
Susannah Tomson
was baptised on 11 October 1719 in Burwash.
-
Ann Tomson
was baptised on 21 April 1723 in Burwash.
Please note, I can
not be 100% certain that the Elizabeth Atwood baptised in 1693 in
Burwash was the one who married in 1713 in Brightling. Burwash and
Brightling are adjacent to one another. There were several Wood
baptisms in Burwash around about the time I would expect Elizabeth to have
been born, but the Atwood baptism was the only Elizabeth. I have yet
to check the Burwash burials to see if 1693 Elizabeth died as an infant or
child. I have checked the Sussex Family History Group's marriage index
and could not identify a marriage for Elizabeth, other than the 1713 one to
John Tomsun.
The IGI records
that an Elizabeth Wood was baptised on 28 March 1692 in Ewhurst,
Sussex, the daughter of Elizabeth Wood, and Ewhurst to Burwash is
only a short distance.
