John TOMPSON (c1610-?)

and Susan MANSER (c1610-?)

John Tompson and Susan Manser were my 10x Great Grandparents.  They married by Licence on 15 May 1632 in Mayfield, Sussex.  His name was recorded as John Tompson in the marriage licence, which was dated 10 May 1632 and issued by South Malling Peculiar, and then as John Thompson in the marriage register.  (Later generations spelt their surname as Thompset(t) and Tompset(t).)

John Tompson's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  Might he have been the son of John Tomson and Eleanor Willard who as widower and widow married on 1 May 1608 in Mayfield?  Or could he have been the son of John Tomset and Agnes Kent who married in Mayfield on 9 May 1591?

Susan Manser's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  Might she have been the daughter of Robert Manser and Ann Brackfield who married in Mayfield on 21 May 1604?  An earlier Robert Manser of Ticehurst, Sussex left a Will which was proved on 28 November 1598.

John Tompson and Susan Manser had 1 known child:

  1. William Tomson, my 9x Great Grandfather, was baptised on 31 January 1634/5 in Mayfield.  As William Tomsett he married Ann Hasleden in 1658.  (They have their own page.)

I have a copy of John Tampsett's Will, which he made on 17 November 1653 and was proved on 7 February 1657 - I will eventually transcribe it and add it to this site.  In the Will he states that he is a Glover of Burwash.  He names Dorothy as his "now wife" and they probably married on 9 September 1645 in Wadhurst, Sussex as John Tompset and Dorothy Fild.  As Dorothy Ward she may have married Roger Feild on 25 April 1626 in Wadhurst.  He then goes on the mention the following children:

  1. Sarah Tompset was to receive 5 within one year of her father's death.  She probably married John Woodgate on 16 November 1652 in Burwash.

  2. Susan Tompset was also to receive 5 within one year of her father's death.  She may have married James Adriel on 30 November 1652 in Wadhurst.

  3. Mary Tompset was to receive 5 shillings within one month of her father's death.  She also received some household goods.  Mary probably married Thomas Witherisse on 20 May 1651 in Burwash.

  4. Joseph Tompset was named as sole executor and received the residue of his father's estate.

Given that all 4 named children would seem to have been of age, I would think they were born before 1632, and that John's first marriage was before or about 1626.  Also given that he did not mention a son William, I would think that the John married to Susan in 1632 and the one who left the 1653 Will, were two different John Tompsett's.
