William Thorpe first married Mary Funnell by banns on 20 November 1772 in Chiddingly, Sussex.  William next married Ann Barrow by banns on 3 January 1784 in Chiddingly. (They were not my direct ancestors.  William was the nephew of my 7x Great Grandfather, Thomas Thorpe, and Ann was the great niece of my 6x Great Grandmother Frances Monk.)

William Thorp was baptised on 4 October 1747 in Chiddingly.  He was the son of Benjamin Thorpe (1707-1781) and Anna Sansum (1707-1778).  William died in about 1819, leaving a will.  He was a cordwainer.

Mary Funnell was baptised on 10 December 1749 in Chalvington, Sussex.  She was the daughter of William Funnell (1721-1787) and Mary Muddle.  She died aged 34 years and was buried in Chiddingly on 2 September 1782.

Ann Barrow was baptised on 29 June 1764 in Burwash, Sussex.  She was the daughter of Joseph Barrow (1739-1812) and Sarah Eastwood (1740-1811).  She was buried on 21 March 1806 in Chiddingly and the burial register records that she was "Mrs. late Ann Barrow, second wife of William Thorpe".

When the 1851 census was recorded he was a 58 year old widower and farmer of 30 acres, employing 1 man, living at Board Oak in Chiddingly.  He gave his place of birth as Chiddingly.  Also with him were his 2 children (Ruth and Sampson Benjamin), and servant Sarah Coleman was 19 and from Arlington.

I had thought the following related to 1793 Chiddingly William, but now see I was wrong.  For the moment I'm not sure were Laughton William fits in with other Thorpe's and at some point I will try and sort this muddle out.

(According to the 1851 census he was born in Laughton, Sussex.

William married Elizabeth Coppard by banns on 29 July 1813 in Barcombe, Sussex.  They were both then of Barcombe.

When the 1851 census was recorded the couple were living in Newick.  William was then a 21 year old agricultural labourer and Louisa was 23.  They both gave their place of birth as Newick.  Also with them was his 12 year old brother George, 58 year old widower father and 78 year old widowed grandmother Elizabeth Coppard.

      2. George Thorpe was born about 1839 in Barcombe, Sussex.)
