Thomas THORPE
(1711-1794)
and Elizabeth DUFFIELD (1707-1793)

Thomas Thorpe and
Elizabeth Duffield were my 7x Great Grandparents.
to see their place in my pedigree chart.) They married on 2 November 1731
at the parish church of St. Bartholomew in Maresfield,
Sussex.
Thomas Thorpe was baptised
on 24 February 1710/11 in Maresfield. He was the son of
Richard Thorpe (1670-1742) and
Elizabeth Clark (c1674-1761). He was buried
on 24 December 1794 in Maresfield. Under the terms of his father's
Will, he received 20 shillings.
Elizabeth Doeffield was
born on 28 April and baptised on 8 May 1707 in Isfield, Sussex. She
was the daughter of
George Duffield (1667-1746) and
Jane Whitney
(1671-1757). She was buried on 24 February 1793 in Maresfield.
Thomas Thorpe and
Elizabeth Duffield had 6 known children:
-
Mary Thorp, my 6x Great Grandmother,
was baptised on 29 September 1724 in Maresfield. She married
Walter Sawyers
(1726-1780) in 1751. (They have their own page.)
-
Thomas Thorp was baptised on 8 February 1737/8 in
Maresfield. He died aged 75 years and was buried on 24 September
1812 in Maresfield.
Thomas married twice. (Please note:
There was a Thomas Thorpe who was born in 1740 in Lindfield
who I believe married Sarah Dicker, but I may have this wrong! It may
be that 1738 Thomas married Sarah and 1740 to Ann and Elizabeth.) He
may have first married Ann Emery on 14 July 1759 in Maresfield.
Unfortunately the original Maresfield marriage register does not exist and
details about the couple and their witnesses are unavailable. Ann
may have been baptised on 28 December 1739 in Steyning, Sussex as the
daughter of William Emery and Ann Evens. The Fletching baptism
register records that Ann "died in childbed" on the birth of Mary in 1772. Thomas and Ann had 4 known children:
-
Sarah Thorpe
was baptised on 20 April 1760 in Maresfield.
-
Thomas Thorpe
was baptised on 14 March 1762 in Fletching.
-
Ann Thorpe
was baptised on 27 August 1769 in Fletching.
-
Mary Thorpe
was baptised on 5 April 1772 in Fletching.
As a
widower
Thomas Thorpe married Elizabeth Venal by banns on 28 October
1779 in Fletching. They were both of Fletching and neither were able
to sign their names. Elizabeth was a spinster. The witnesses to
the marriage were Thomas Stevenson and John Relfe who both signed their
names. There were no known children from this marriage. Elizabeth may have been baptised on 26 July 1738 as the daughter of
Thomas Vennal and Mary, or, on 1 July 1739 as the daughter of
John Vennal and Mary. Both baptisms were in Fletching.
She died aged 64 years and was buried on 1 April 1802 in Fletching.
-
Elizabeth Thorp was baptised on 6 July 1740 in
Maresfield.
Elizabeth married Thomas Elphick on 31 May 1762 in Maresfield.
Unfortunately the original Maresfield marriage register does not exist and
details about the couple and their witnesses are unavailable. Thomas
may have been baptised on 9 June 1731 in Ringmer, Sussex as the
son of Thomas Elphick and Martha, or on 13 October 1741 in
Little Horsted, Sussex as the son of William Elphick and Susanna
Brown. Thomas and Elizabeth had 6 known children:
