Thomas THORPE (1711-1794)

and Elizabeth DUFFIELD (1707-1793)

Thomas Thorpe and Elizabeth Duffield were my 7x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see their place in my pedigree chart.)  They married on 2 November 1731 at the parish church of St. Bartholomew in Maresfield, Sussex.

Thomas Thorpe was baptised on 24 February 1710/11 in Maresfield.  He was the son of Richard Thorpe (1670-1742) and Elizabeth Clark (c1674-1761).  He was buried on 24 December 1794 in Maresfield.  Under the terms of his father's Will, he received 20 shillings.

Elizabeth Doeffield was born on 28 April and baptised on 8 May 1707 in Isfield, Sussex.  She was the daughter of George Duffield (1667-1746) and Jane Whitney (1671-1757).  She was buried on 24 February 1793 in Maresfield.

Thomas Thorpe and Elizabeth Duffield had 6 known children:

  1. Mary Thorp, my 6x Great Grandmother, was baptised on 29 September 1724 in Maresfield.  She married Walter Sawyers (1726-1780) in 1751.  (They have their own page.)

  2. Thomas Thorp was baptised on 8 February 1737/8 in Maresfield.  He died aged 75 years and was buried on 24 September 1812 in Maresfield.

Thomas married twice.  (Please note:  There was a Thomas Thorpe who was born in 1740 in Lindfield who I believe married Sarah Dicker, but I may have this wrong!  It may be that 1738 Thomas married Sarah and 1740 to Ann and Elizabeth.)  He may have first married Ann Emery on 14 July 1759 in Maresfield.  Unfortunately the original Maresfield marriage register does not exist and details about the couple and their witnesses are unavailable.

Ann may have been baptised on 28 December 1739 in Steyning, Sussex as the daughter of William Emery and Ann Evens.  The Fletching baptism register records that Ann "died in childbed" on the birth of Mary in 1772.

Thomas and Ann had 4 known children:

    1. Sarah Thorpe was baptised on 20 April 1760 in Maresfield.

    2. Thomas Thorpe was baptised on 14 March 1762 in Fletching.

    3. Ann Thorpe was baptised on 27 August 1769 in Fletching.

    4. Mary Thorpe was baptised on 5 April 1772 in Fletching.

As a widower Thomas Thorpe married Elizabeth Venal by banns on 28 October 1779 in Fletching.  They were both of Fletching and neither were able to sign their names.  Elizabeth was a spinster.  The witnesses to the marriage were Thomas Stevenson and John Relfe who both signed their names.  There were no known children from this marriage.

Elizabeth may have been baptised on 26 July 1738 as the daughter of Thomas Vennal and Mary, or, on 1 July 1739 as the daughter of John Vennal and Mary.  Both baptisms were in Fletching.  She died aged 64 years and was buried on 1 April 1802 in Fletching.

  3. Elizabeth Thorp was baptised on 6 July 1740 in Maresfield.

Elizabeth married Thomas Elphick on 31 May 1762 in Maresfield.  Unfortunately the original Maresfield marriage register does not exist and details about the couple and their witnesses are unavailable.

Thomas may have been baptised on 9 June 1731 in Ringmer, Sussex as the son of Thomas Elphick and Martha, or on 13 October 1741 in Little Horsted, Sussex as the son of William Elphick and Susanna Brown.

Thomas and Elizabeth had 6 known children:

    1. John Elphick was baptised on 22 January 1764 in Maresfield.  The Maresfield burial register records the John Elphick an infant was buried on 13 December 1769.

    2. Thomas Elphick was baptised on 9 June 1765 in Maresfield and buried there on 4 October 1765.

    3. Elizabeth Elphick was baptised on 13 September 1767 in Maresfield and buried there on 8 November 1767.

    4. William Elphick was baptised on 15 April 1770 in Maresfield.

    5. Edward Elphick may have died before he was baptised.  He was buried on 21 June 1773 in Maresfield.

    6. Richard Elphick was baptised on 6 July 1774 in Maresfield and buried there on 14 July 1774.

  4. Sarah Thorp was baptised on 30 May 1742 in Maresfield.

Sarah married Joseph Simmonds on 29 June 1762 in Maresfield.  Unfortunately the original Maresfield marriage register does not exist and details about the couple and their witnesses are unavailable.

Joseph was baptised on 29 May 1737 in Maresfield.  He was the son of Edward Simmonds (1705-?) and Mary.

Joseph and Sarah had 8 known children:

    1. William Simmons was baptised on 5 December 1762 in Maresfield.

    2. Thomas Simmons was baptised on 30 December 1764 in Maresfield.

Thomas married Sarah Leppard on 1 May 1792 in Lindfield, Sussex.

Thomas and Sarah had the following children:

      1. Martha Simmonds was baptised 2 June 1793 in Lindfield.  Martha married John Scott on 2 May 1814 in Lindfield.

When the 1841 census was recorded the couple and 7 children were living in Bunch Grove, West Hoathly, Sussex.  Edward was said to be 35 years old and a lathe mender.  Amelia's name seems to have been recorded as 30 or 39 year old Mildred.

In 1851, the couple and 2 children were still living at Bunch Grove, West Hoathly.  Edward was a 51 year old labourer and Amelia was 48.  The both said they were born in West Hoathly.

Edward and Amelia had the following children:

        1. Mary Corke was born about 1826.  She was said to have been 15 years old in 1841.

        2. Edward Corke was born about 1825 in West Hoathly.  He was said to have been 15 years old in 1841.  Edward married Mary.  In 1851 the couple and 2 children were living at Bunch Grove in West Hoathly, next door to his parents.  Also with the family was unmarried 20 year old lodger, Thomas ?iniston.  They were all born in West Hoathly.  Edward was then a 26 year old Cleaner Woollman (think that's what it says) and Mary was 25.

Edward and Mary had the following children:

          1. Edward Corke was born about 1849 in West Hoathly.  He was 2 years old in 1851.

        6. Mildred Corke was born about 1836.  She was said to have been 5 years old in 1841.
