Richard THORPE (1670-1742)

and Elizabeth CLARK (c1674-1761)

Richard Thorp and Elizabeth Clark were my 8x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see their place in my pedigree chart.)  They married on 7 May 1694 in Old Windsor, Berkshire.  The entry in the marriage register noted that Richard was from Maresfield, Sussex and Elizabeth was of the parish of Old Windsor.  (Many thanks to Judi Griffin for passing on a copy of the marriage entry in the Bishop's Transcripts.)

Richard Thorpe was baptised on 27 April 1670 in Buxted, Sussex.  He was the son of Benedict Thorpe (1634-1697) and Susanna Brown (1638-1692).  He was buried on 13 January 1741/2 in Maresfield, Sussex.  He does not seem to have left a Will.

Elizabeth Clark was born about 1674 in Old Windsor, Berkshire.  She may have been buried on 19 July 1761 in Maresfield, however, the burial registers just states that Widow Thorpe was buried.

Richard Thorpe and Elizabeth Clark had 7 known children:

  1. William Thorpe was born about 1695.  He died aged 91 years and was buried on 16 March 1786 in Ardingly, Sussex.  He married Anne Locke (1694-1763) on 19 April 1726 in Ardingly.  William and Ann had 3 known children.  (They will have their own page.)

  2. Richard Thorpe was born about 1797.  He may have died in 1745 in Lindfield, Sussex.

  3. John Thorpe was baptised on 2 February 1700/1 in Maresfield.  He may have died in 1746 in Fletching.  He married Mary sometime before or about 1724.  John and Mary had 3 known children.  (They will have their own page.)

  4. Nicholas Thorpe was baptised on 17 April 1704 in Maresfield.  He was buried on 13 September 1742 in Fletching.  Nicholas married twice.  Firstly to Susanna Hames (1695-1734) in 1729 in Fletching and they had 3 known children.  Nicholas then married Elizabeth Arnold (1705-1791) in 1737 in Fletching and they had 2 known children.  (They have their own page.)

  5. Benjamin Thorpe was baptised on 7 November 1707 in Maresfield.  He married Ann Sansum in 1731.  (They have their own page.)

  6. 5 227 Thomas Thorpe, my 7x Great Grandfather, was baptised on 24 February 1710/11 in Maresfield.  He was buried on 24 December 1794 in Maresfield.  Thomas married 5 227 Elizabeth Duffield in 1731 in Maresfield.  Thomas and Elizabeth had 6 known children.  (They have their own page.)

  7. James Thorpe was born about 1714.  He died in 1794 in West Hoathly, Sussex.  He married Mary Steere on 16 August 1737 in West Hoathly.  James and Mary had 10 known children.  (They will have their own page.)

Richard Thorpe and Elizabeth Clark were married for about 48 years.

At marriage Richard was aged about 24 and Elizabeth about 20 years.

Richard died aged about 71 and Elizabeth about 87 years.

They had 27 known Grandchildren.  All of whom were born within Elizabeth's life time and 16 in Richard's life time.
