John THORPE (c1608-1659)

and Joan (c1612-c1642)

 

John Thorpe and Joan were my 10x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see their place in my pedigree chart.)  They married sometime before or about 1630.  I have checked the Sussex and Surrey marriage indexes and could not find a marriage for John and Joan.

John Thorp was born about 1608 in Worth.  He was the son of Giles Thorpe (1577-1631) and Rachell Parker (c1581-1644).  He was buried on 29 April 1659 in Worth and was described in the burial register as a gent.  He may have been named after his Grandfather John Thorpe (c1534-1607) who was an Iron Master.  In April 1642 John contributed 4s. to the relief of the Irish Protestants.

Joan may have been born about 1612 and possibly in Ifield.  She may have died in either July 1642 or 1647 - need to double check.

 

John Thorpe and Joan had 5 known children:

  1. Giles Thorpe was born about 1630 and possibly in Ifield, Sussex.  He was buried on 6 March 1688/9 in Buxted.  He married Dina(h) sometime before or about 1651.  I have checked the Sussex Family History Group's marriage index and could not find a marriage for Giles and Dina(h).  She was buried on 24 January 1683/4 in Buxted.  Giles and Dina(h) had 4 known children:

    1. Elizabeth Thorpe was baptised on 1 July 1651 in East Grinstead, Sussex.  The baptism register recorded that her parents were of Worth.

    2. John Thorpe was baptised on 30 February 1652/3 in Worth.

    3. Giles Thorpe was baptised on 1 March 1654 in Worth.  He may have been buried on 29 June 1711 in Worth.

    4. George Thorpe was baptised on 3 October 1657 in Worth and buried there on 30 January 1658/9.

  2. Rachel Thorpe was baptised on 14 March 1632/3 in Ifield and in the baptism register her father was described as a gentleman.  She was buried on 22 February 1663/4 in Buxted.

  3. Benedict Thorpe, my 9x Great Grandfather, was baptised on 16 November 1634 in Ifield.  He married Susanna Browne (c1638-1692) in 1666.  (They have their own page.)

  4. Elennor Thorpe was baptised on 11 July 1639 in Ifield and her father was then a gentleman.  She was buried on 1 September 1648 in Worth.

  5. Joane Thorpp was baptised on 5 January 1642/3 in Ifield and her father was then a gentleman.
