My Thorpe AncestorsI join the Thorpe tree with a 6x Great Grandmother Mary Thorpe who was born in 1734 in Maresfield, Sussex. She married Walter Sawyers (1726-1780) in 1751 also in Maresfield, which is where they raised their family. Mary's father Thomas Thorpe (1711-1794) was also born in Maresfield. He married Elizabeth Duffield (1707-1793), who was from nearby Isfield. His father Richard Thorpe (1670-1742) had been born in Buxted, but had settled in Maresfield by the time his first child was baptised there in January 1697. He is said to have married Elizabeth Clark in 1694 in Old Windsor, Berkshire, but I don't know where this data comes from. Richard was a Labourer. Richard was the son of Benedict Thorpe (1634-1697) and Susanna Browne (c1638-1692). Benedict was born in Ifield, Sussex, up on the Sussex/Surrey border. He may have been born at a time when the family fortunes were on the decline. His father John Thorpe (c1608-1659) had been described as a Gent, and his Grandfather, another John Thorpe (c1534-1607) had been a very wealthy Iron Master. In between the 2 Johns came Giles Thorpe (1577-1632). He was baptised in East Grinstead, but may have been born in Worth.
