Benedict THORPE (1634-1697)

and Susanna BROWNE (1635-1692)

 

Benedict Thorpe and Susanna Browne were my 9x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see their place in my pedigree chart.)   They married on 14 July 1666 in Buxted, Sussex.

Benedict Thorpe was baptised on 16 November 1634 in Ifield, Sussex, when his father was described as a gent.  He was the son of John Thorpe (c1608-1659) and Joan (c1612-c1642).  Benedict was buried on 8 June 1697 in Buxted.

Susanna Browne was baptised on 7 June 1635 in Ifield.  She was the daughter of William Browne (1604-?) and Susanna Cooper.  Susanna was buried on 17 September 1692 in Buxted.  Her Grandfather was the Reverend Benjamin Browne (1571-1638) of Ifield.

 

Benedict Thorpe and Susanna Browne had 6 known children:

  1. Benedict Thorpe was baptised on 13 May 1666 in Buxted, before the marriage of his parents.  He was buried on 1 March 1695/6 in Buxted.  Later in 1696 when his daughter Judith was baptised and it was noted in the register that her father was deceased.

    Benedict married Mary Poolly on 22 April 1688 in Maresfield, Sussex.  However, Benedict's wife's name was recorded as Anne against the baptisms of some of their children.  I have checked the Sussex Family History Group's marriage index and the marriage to Mary was the only one found.

    Anne/Mary Poolly's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  Either Anne and Mary were one and the same or Mary died soon after they married and Benedict married Anne almost straight away.

    Benedict and Anne/Mary had 5 known children:

    1. John Thorpe was baptised on 14 September 1690 in Buxted.  His mother's name was recorded as Anne.

    2. Elizabeth Thorpe was baptised on 13 March 1691/2 in Buxted.  Her parents were recorded as Benjamin Thorpe, junr, and Mary.  But this seems to be the only mention of a Benjamin, and Elizabeth fits into the pattern of baptisms for Benedict.  Also Elizabeth's sister Judith named a son Benjamin.

    3. Thomas Thorp was baptised on 12 November 1693 in Buxted.  His mother's name was recorded as Ann.

    4. Mary Thorp was baptised on 28 April 1695 in Buxted.  Only her father's name was recorded in the baptism register.  She may have married William Brann on 3 April 1730 in Buxted.

    5. Judith Thorpe was baptised on 27 September 1696 in Buxted, nearly 7 months after the death of her father.  Her mother's name was not recorded in the baptism register.  She married Richard Tugwell in 1724.  (They have their own page.)

  2. Richard Thorpe, my 8x Great Grandfather, was baptised on 27 April 1670 in Buxted.  He married Elizabeth Clark (c1674-1761) in 1694.  (They have their own page.)

  3. Elizabeth Thorpe was baptised on 23 March 1672/3 in Buxted.

  4. John Thorpe was baptised on 28 May 1676 in Buxted.

  5. William Thorpe was baptised on 10 March 1677/8 in Buxted.  He may have been buried on 4 April 1680 in Buxted, but the burial register just records that "William Thorpe was buryed".

  6. Thomas Thorpe was baptised on 29 May 1681 in Buxted.
