William TESTER (1702-1752)

and Susanna PLAW (1689-1756)

East Hoathly church, circa 1908, from: http://theweald.org/m13.asp?PicIdto=9900824William Tester and Susanna Plaw were my 7x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see their place in my pedigree chart.)  They married on 20 April 1722 in East Hoathly, Sussex.

William Tester was baptised on 30 August 1702 in Framfield, Sussex.  He was the son of William Tester (1675-1726) and Barbara Masiere (?-1720) or Elizabeth.  William was buried on 19 January 1751/2 in Mayfield.

Susanna Plaw's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  Might she have been baptised on 16 June 1689 in Waldron, Sussex the daughter of Edward Plaw and Anne Parker?  However, a William Plaw was buried in 1712 and an Elizabeth Plaw, widow was buried in 1714, both in Framfield - might they have been Susanna's parents or maybe grandparents?  She was most probably buried as widow Tester in Mayfield on 20 July 1756.  (William and Susan would seem to have been the only Tester couple in Mayfield at that time.

When the 1747 Window Assessment was undertaken, William Tester of Mayfield had 9 windows, but because he was poor he was exempt from paying the 2 shillings tax.

William Tester and Susanna Plaw had 3 known children:

  1. Edward Tester, my 6x Great Grandfather, was baptised on 16 June 1723 in Framfield.  He married Frances Monk in 1746 in Burwash, Sussex.  (They have their own page.)

  2. Susanna Tester was baptised on 14 August 1726 in Mayfield, Sussex.

Susanna married Joseph Jenner by banns on 3 February 1748 in Mayfield.  They were both then of Mayfield.

  3. William Tester was baptised on 20 April 1728 in Mayfield.

On 3 January 1757, William was a witnesses to the marriage of Stephen Shoesmith (c1734-1781) and Martha Tester in Mayfield.

William may have married Mary Attwood on 2 February 1750/1 in Wadhurst, Sussex.  If so, then William and Mary had 5 known children:

    1. Thomas Tester was baptised on 2 February 1751/2 in Wadhurst.

Thomas married Elizabeth Hawkins on 18 December 1774 in Wadhurst.  They had 7 known children.

    2. Betty Tester was baptised on 23 September 1753 in Wadhurst.

Betty married Thomas Maplesden on 23 April 1779 in Wadhurst.

    3. Mary Tester was baptised on 12 June 1757 in Wadhurst.

Mary married Edward Cunny by banns on 18 August 1782 in Wadhurst.

    4. Susannah Tester was baptised on 13 May 1759 in Wadhurst.

Susanna married Thomas Baitup by banns on 8 May 1786 in Wadhurst, at which time they were both of Wadhurst.

Thomas and Susan had 2 known children:

      1. Sarah Baitup was baptised on 1 September 1786 in Wadhurst.

      2. Daniel Baitup was baptised on 1 February 1799 in Wadhurst.  He may have married Sarah Reed by banns on 16 September 1823 in Wadhurst.  They were both then of Wadhurst.

    5. Anne Tester was baptised on 24 July 1766 in Wadhurst.
