Henry TESTER (1786-?)

and Eleanor CROSS (1785-1847)

 

Henry Tester and Eleanor Cross married on 7 October 1804 in Etchingham, Sussex.  Her name was then recorded as Eleanor Croft.  (They were not my direct ancestors.)

Henry Tester was baptised on 19 November 1786 in Salehurst, Sussex.  He was the son of Henry Tester (1759-1841) and Susannah Chapman (?-1844).  He died after the 1870 USA census was recorded..

Eleanor Cross was baptised on 26 December 1785 in Ticehurst.  She was the daughter of Richard Cross and Sarah.  She died on 5 October 1847 and was buried in Fair Mount Cemetery, Chatham, Morris County, New Jersey.  Her name was recorded as Ellen, wife of Henry Tester, on her headstone.

 

Henry Tester and Eleanor Cross had 8 known children:

  1. John Tester was born on 13 November 1804 and baptised on 31 March 1805 in Etchingham.  He died on 1 March 1875 in Passaic Township, Morris Country, New Jersey and was buried in the New Vernon ME Cemetery, New Vernon, Morris County, New Jersey.  He married Sophia Manning on 31 December 1832 in Middletown Point, Monmouth Country, New Jersey.  John and Sophia had 12 children.

  2. Harriet Tester was baptised on 5 August 1810 in Salehurst.  She died on 11 January 1872 in Bernards Township, Somerset County, New Jersey.  She had an illegitimate son:

    1. John Tester was baptised on 14 December 1828 in Etchingham.  He may have been recorded as the ninth child of Henry and Ellen.

    Harriet married twice.  Firstly to George Paul by whom she had 2 daughters.  She then married Daniel Sanders on 28 February 1835 in Morris Township, Morris County.  They had 6 children.

  3. Sarah Tester was born on 6 August 1812 in Salehurst and baptised on 18 October 1812 in Hawkhurst, Kent.  She died on 23 May 1894 in Seward, Seward County, Nebraska.  Sarah married Robert Bye on 31 December 1832 in Middletown Point.  They had 10 children.

  4. Eloisa Tester or Eliza Tester was baptised on 25 June 1815 in Salehurst.  She died on 28 October 1902 in Newark, Essex County, New Jersey.  She married Thomas Betts on 31 December 1831 in Middletown Point.  They had 5 children.

  5. Charlotte Tester was baptised on 11 January 1818 in Etchingham.  She married James Persey or Percy on 31 December 1826 in Morris Township, Morris County.

  6. Thomas Tester was born on 20 February 1821 and baptised on 1 April 1821 in Ticehurst.  He died on 20 October 1888 when he was struck by a train.  Thomas married Catherine Smith on 20 November 1851 in Bedminster, Somerset County, New Jersey.  They had 6 children.

  7. Susannah Tester was born on 15 October and baptised on 28 November 1823 at the Wesleyan Chapel in Salehurst.  She died on 30 April 1913 in Prince George County, Virginia.  She married Calvin H. Dickenson on 27 August 1848 in Madison, Morris Country, New Jersey.  They had 4 children.

  8. Mary Tester was born on 13 October 1826 and baptised on 1 November 1826 at the Wesleyan Chapel in Sandhurst, Kent.  She married David Price on 5 June 1853 at Summit, Union County, New Jersey.  The couple had 2 children.

 

Henry, Ellen and family of possibly 9 children, emigrated to the USA in about 1829/30.  They first settled in Morris County, New Jersey and in the mid 1800's some members of the family moved to Montgomery County, Illinois.
