Henry TESTER (1759-1841)

and Susannah CHAPMAN (1760-1844)

 

Henry Tester and Susannah Chapman married by banns on 3 April 1786 in Etchingham, Sussex.  They were both of Etchingham and both made their X marks.  The witnesses were John Marchant and William Barham.  (They were not my direct ancestors.)

Henry Tester was baptised on 8 December 1759 in Burwash.  He was the son of Edward Tester (1723-1808) and Frances Monk (1722-1790)  He was buried on 28 July 1841 in Etchingham.  Henry was an agricultural labourer.

Susannah Chapman was baptised on 10 December 1760 in Hawkhurst, Kent.  She was the daughter of Benjamin Chapman and Aloisa.  She was buried on 18 April 1844 in Etchingham.

 

Henry Tester and Susannah Chapman had 7 known children:

  1. Henry Tester was baptised on 19 November 1786 in Salehurst.  He married Eleanor Cross in 1804.  (They have their own page.)

  2. Edward Tester was baptised on 4 January 1790 in Etchingham.  He married Catherine Harvey about or before 1813/4.  (They have their own page.)

  3. Elizabeth Tester was baptised on 6 October 1793 in Etchingham.

    Elizabeth married George Noakes on 23 November 1817 in Etchingham.  They were both then of Etchingham.

    George may have been baptised on 25 November 1792 in Ticehurst and have been the son of Robert Noakes and Dorothy Goldsmith.

    George and Elizabeth had 7 known children:

    1. Mary Elizabeth Noakes was baptised on 20 September 1818 in Etchingham.

    2. Harriet Noakes was baptised on 6 March 1821 in Ticehurst.

    3. George Noakes was baptised on 14 September 1823 in Ticehurst.

    4. Charlotte Noakes was baptised on 17 June 1827 in Ticehurst.

    5. Robert Noakes was baptised on 31 October 1830 in Ticehurst.

    6. Clara Noakes was baptised on 17 February 1833 in Ticehurst.

    7. John Noakes was baptised on 7 May 1835 in Ticehurst.

  4. Susan Tester was baptised on 10 July 1796 in Etchingham.

    Susan married William Soan by banns on 4 November 1813 in Etchingham.

    The couple had 1 known daughter:

    1. Jane Soan was baptised on 27 March 1814 in Etchingham.

  5. Sarah Tester was baptised on 5 May 1799 in Etchingham.  She had an illegitimate son by Thomas Sinden:

    1. Thomas Sinden Tester was baptised on 22 November 1819 in Hurst Green.  (I have been asked by Barry Armstrong if I have any source documentation for the birth/baptism of Thomas Sinden Tester, but for the moment I can't remember how I came by this data.)

      Thomas married Lucy Hyland.

      Lucy was baptised 26 February 1831 in Burwash, the daughter of Thomas Hyland (1797-1874) and Maria Lusted (1799-1850).  Lucy's grandparents were Edward Hilder and Elizabeth Hyland (1779-1832) and Samuel Lusted (1762-1858) and Jane Pantry (1768-1847).

    Sarah married Thomas Baker by banns on 18 January 1824 in Etchingham.  She was then a spinster and he a widower, and they were both of Etchingham.

    They had 4 known children:

    1. Henry Edward Baker was baptised on 19 August 1827 in Etchingham.

    2. Jesse Baker was baptised on 12 July 1833 in Etchingham.

    3. William Baker was baptised on 22 June 1834 in Etchingham.

    4. Sarah Baker was baptised on 3 April 1836 in Etchingham.

  6. John Tester was born about 1802.  He died on 29 April 1888 in the Poor House of Boonton, Morris Country, New Jersey and was buried in Potter's Field.

    John married Mary Weston by banns on 3 April 1826 in Salehurst.  At the time he was aged 24 years and of Etchingham.  Mary was then a widow aged 29.  The witnesses to the marriage were John Edmunds and Edward Heathfield.  As Mary Ann Russell she had previously married James Weston on 25 November 1817 in Ticehurst, Sussex.  At the time Mary Ann was of Ticehurst and James of Burwash.  The witnesses the marriage were William Dann and Mary Bellingham.

    John and Mary had 2 known children:

    1. John M. Tester was baptised in 1826 in Sandhurst, Kent.

    2. Virgina Tester was baptised in 1828 in Etchingham.

  7. Fanny Tester was baptised on 7 July 1805 in Etchingham.

    Fanny married Richard Smith on 31 January 1828 in Etchingham.

    The couple had 1 known daughter:

    1. Matilda Smith was baptised on 13 December 1836 in Salehurst.
