Edward TESTER (1723-1808)

and Frances MONK (1722-1790)

Edward Tester and Frances Monk were my 6x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see their place in my pedigree chart.)  They married on 10 April 1746 in parish church of St. Bartholomew in Burwash, Sussex and they were both of Burwash.  At the time of their marriage Edward was about 23 years old and Frances about 24.  They were married for 44 years and had at least 14 Grandchildren.

Edward Tester was baptised on 16 June 1723 in Framfield, Sussex.  He was the eldest son of 5 289 William Tester (1702-1752) and 5 289 Susanna Plaw (1689-1756).  He died aged 85 and was buried on 6 February 1808 in Burwash.

Frances Monk was baptised on 26 August 1722 in Etchingham, Sussex.  She was the daughter of 5 194 Henry Monk (1682-1759) and 5 194 Sarah Collins (c1685-1767).  She was buried on 25 September 1790 in Burwash.  Frances, her parents and siblings probably moved from Etchingham to Burwash sometime between 1724 and 1734.  Her father was a Miller.

In 1747 a Window Tax assessment was undertaken and Edward Tester of Burwash had 9 windows and was required to pay a tax of 2 shillings.

Edward Tester and Frances Monk had 7 known children:

  1. Mary Tester, my 5x Great Grandmother, was baptised on 19 September 1747 in Burwash.  She married William Kitchenham in 1777 in Ticehurst.  (They have their own page.)

  2. Frances Tester was baptised on 7 February 1749/50 in Burwash.

Frances married Robert Cane by banns on 24 April 1774 in Ticehurst, Sussex.  Robert was a bachelor and signed his name, whilst Frances was a spinster and made her X mark.  They were both of Ticehurst.  The witnesses were Thomas Wood and Thomas Cane.  The banns were published on 20 and 27 March and 3 April 1774 in Ticehurst.

Robert was baptised on 8 May 1743 in Ticehurst and was the son of Robert Kane and Mary Paris.

Robert and Frances had 1 known son:

    1. James Cane was baptised on 19 April 1778 in Ticehurst.

  3. Elizabeth Tester was baptised on 17 November 1752 in Burwash.

    Elizabeth had an illegitimate son:

    1. Thomas Weston Tester was baptised on 11 February 1776 in Burwash.

Elizabeth may have married John Johnson by banns on 29 March 1780 in Burwash.  John was a bachelor and signed his name, whilst Elizabeth was a spinster and made her X mark.  They were both of Burwash.  The witnesses were Samuel Edwards and William Harvey (think thatís his surname).

  4. Edward Tester was baptised on 5 November 1756 in Burwash.

Edward married Elizabeth Leany by banns on 24 December 1779 in Etchingham.  They were both of Etchingham.  Edward signed his name whilst Elizabeth made her X mark.  The witnesses were William Barham and William Kitchenham, who both signed their names.

Elizabeth was baptised on 30 April 1758 in Burwash and was the daughter of Thomas Leney and Mary Hammond.

  5. Henry Tester was baptised on 8 December 1759 in Burwash.  He married Susannah Chapman in 1786.  (They have their own page.)

  6. Susannah Tester was baptised on 27 December 1762 in Burwash.  She may have been buried on 6 November 1784 in Burwash.

  7. Sarah Tester was baptised on 20 July 1766 in Ticehurst, Sussex.  She may have been buried on 30 July 1787 in Burwash.
