Edward TESTER
(1723-1808)
and Frances MONK (1722-1790)

Edward
Tester and
Frances Monk
were my 6x Great Grandparents. (Click
here to see their place in my pedigree chart.)
They married on 10 April 1746 in parish church of St. Bartholomew in Burwash, Sussex and they were both of
Burwash. At the time of their marriage Edward was about 23 years old
and Frances about 24. They were married for 44 years and had at least
14 Grandchildren.
Edward Tester
was baptised on 16 June 1723 in Framfield,
Sussex. He was the eldest son of

Plaw (1689-1756). He died aged 85 and was buried
on 6 February 1808 in Burwash.
Frances Monk
was baptised on 26 August 1722 in
Etchingham, Sussex. She was the daughter of

Monk (1682-1759) and

Sarah
Collins (c1685-1767). She was buried on
25 September 1790 in Burwash. Frances, her parents and siblings probably
moved from Etchingham to Burwash sometime between 1724 and 1734. Her father
was a Miller.
In 1747 a Window Tax assessment was undertaken and Edward Tester
of Burwash had 9 windows and was required to pay a tax of 2 shillings.

Grandmother, was baptised on 19 September 1747 in Burwash. She married
William Kitchenham in 1777 in
Ticehurst. (They have their own page.)

was baptised on 7 February 1749/50 in
Burwash.
Frances married
Robert Cane
by banns on 24 April 1774 in Ticehurst,
Sussex. Robert was a bachelor and signed his name, whilst Frances was a
spinster and made her X mark. They were both of Ticehurst. The witnesses
were Thomas Wood
and
Thomas Cane.
The banns were published on 20 and 27 March and 3 April 1774 in Ticehurst.
Robert was baptised on 8 May 1743 in Ticehurst and was the son
of Robert Kane
and
Mary Paris.
Robert and Frances had 1 known son:

was baptised on 19 April 1778 in
Ticehurst.

was baptised on 17 November 1752 in
Burwash.
Elizabeth had an illegitimate son:

was baptised on 11 February 1776 in Burwash.
Elizabeth may have married
John Johnson
by banns on 29 March 1780 in Burwash.
John was a bachelor and signed his name, whilst Elizabeth was a spinster
and made her X mark. They were both of Burwash. The witnesses were
Samuel Edwards

William Harvey
(think that’s his surname).

Elizabeth was baptised on 30 April 1758 in Burwash and was the daughter of
Thomas Leney
and
Mary Hammond.

was baptised on 8 December 1759 in
Burwash. He married
Susannah Chapman
in 1786. (They have their

Susannah Tester
was baptised on 27 December 1762 in
Burwash. She may have been buried on 6 November 1784 in Burwash.

Sarah Tester was baptised on 20
July 1766 in Ticehurst, Sussex. She may have been buried on 30 July 1787
in Burwash.
