William TERRY (1731-1786)

and Elizabeth STEEL (1733-1769)

William Terry and Elizabeth Steel were, I believe, my 6x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see their place in my pedigree chart.)  They married on 21 October 1755 in Woodmancote, Sussex.  Elizabeth was of Brighthelmstone and married with the consent of parents.  William signed his name, whilst Elizabeth made her X mark.  The witnesses were John Steel and Henry Heath.

William Terry was baptised on 8 April 1731 in Woodmancote.  He was the son of 5 311 William Terry (c1700-1761) and 5 311 Sarah Worsfield (c1705-1757).  He was buried on 23 April 1786 in Woodmancote.

Elizabeth Steel was baptised on 13 May 1733 in Hurstpierpoint, Sussex.  She was the daughter of 5 312 John Steel (1707-1784) and 5 312 Elizabeth Bartholomew (1713-1791).  She was buried on 7 September 1769 in Woodmancote.  However, given that she married with parental consent, could this mean she was under 21 in 1755 and was, therefore, born after October 1734?

William Terry and Elizabeth Steel had 7 known children:

  1. Ann Terry, my 5x Great Grandmother, was baptised on 16 November 1755 in Newtimber, Sussex, although the baptism register records that her parents were of Woodmancote.  She married 5 305 Richard Spicer in 1778.  (They have their own page.)

  2. William Terry was baptised on 22 July 1757 in Woodmancote.

  3. John Terry was baptised on 12 August 1759 in Woodmancote.  He may have died aged 79 years in Henfield and have been buried on 24 May 1835 in Woodmancote (this would mean he was born about 1756).

John married Ann Wood on 12 February 1786 in Woodmancote.

An Anne Terry died aged 87 years at Swaines and was buried on 10 February 1839 in Woodmancote (born about 1752).

John and Ann had the following children:

    1. Elizabeth Terry was baptised on 9 March 1788 in Woodmancote.

    2. Ann Terry was baptised on 18 April 1790 in Woodmancote.

    3. Sophia Terry was baptised on 13 May 1792 in Woodmancote.

    4. James Terry was baptised on 19 January 1794 in Woodmancote.

    5. Sarah Terry was baptised on 28 February 1796 in Woodmancote.

    6. Henry Terry was baptised on 6 December 1798 in Woodmancote.

    7. Lucy Terry was privately baptised on 16 September 1802 in Woodmancote and received into the church on 19 December 1802.  Lucy married Richard Foice in 1824.

  4. Elizabeth Terry was baptised on 17 June 1761 in Woodmancote.

  5. Sarah Terry was baptised on 22 April 1763 in Woodmancote.

  6. Ephriam Terry was baptised on 26 May 1765 in Woodmancote.

Ephraim may have married Sarah Baker by banns on 2 December 1788 in Washington, Sussex.

  7. Barbara Terry was baptised on 13 August 1769 in Woodmancote and buried there on 12 January 1770.
