Thomas SWIFT
(1700-?)
and Elizabeth BAITUPP (c1700-?)

Thomas
Swift and Elizabeth Baitupp
married in 1723. A marriage licence was issued in the
Archdeaconry of Lewes on 7 January 1722/3 in the names of Thomas Swift
a husbandman of Wadhurst and Elizabeth Baitupp a spinster.
(They were not my direct ancestors. Thomas was the half brother of my
7x Great Grandmother,
Elizabeth
Swift.)
Thomas Swift was baptised on 1 January 1700/1 in Wadhurst, Sussex.
He was the son of
John
Swift (1669-1730) and
Priscilla Foster (?-1706). He was a labourer. Thomas
may have been buried in Wadhurst on 15 May 1738, but only the name was
recorded and nothing to help determine which Thomas Swift was buried,
and he did have an Uncle
Thomas Swift
born in 1672.
Elizabeth Baitupp's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to
me.
Thomas Swift and Elizabeth Baitupp had 7 known children:
-
Mary Swift was baptised on 19 May 1723 in Wadhurst. She had
an illegitimate son:
-
Edward Apps Swift was baptised on 24 February 1745/6 in Wadhurst.
His father may have been Edward Apps who as a bachelor of Wadhurst
married Sarah Swinfin of Rotherfield on 1 August 1746 in the Fleet
Prison, London.
As Edward Apps Swift he married Sarah Keys by banns on 5 January 1764 in Frant,
Sussex. They were both of Frant and both made their marks. The
witnesses to the marriage were Edward Latter and Thomas Appelbe
who both signed their names.
Mary later married John Oldacre by banns on 13 February 1757 in Wadhurst.
They were both of Wadhurst. He signed his name whilst Mary made her
X mark. The witnesses were Thomas Batetop and George
Chapman who both signed their names.
-
John Swift was baptised on 23 January 1724/5 in Wadhurst.
-
Rebekah Swift was baptised on 3 February 1725/6 in Wadhurst.
-
Richard Swift was baptised on 11 February 1727/8 in Wadhurst.
-
Thomas Swift was baptised on 5 July 1730 in Wadhurst. He may
have been buried on 15 May 1738, but that burial have referred to his
father or his great uncle.
-
Robert Swift was baptised on 26 September 1731 in Wadhurst.
-
Sarah Swift was baptised on 14 May 1733 in Wadhurst. She
may have
married William Latter by banns on 26 October 1769 in Frant, Sussex, but she
did have a cousin named
Sarah
Swift who was born in 1749. William was of Frant and Sarah
of Wadhurst and they both signed their names. The witnesses to the
marriage were John Sands and John Waghorn.
