Samuel SWIFT (1636-1710)

and Sarah PLASTED (1641-?)

Samuel Swift and Sarah Plasted were my 9x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see their place in my pedigree chart.)  They married on 12 June 1662 at the parish church of St. Peter and St. Paul in Wadhurst, Sussex.

Samuel Swift was baptised on 14 August 1636 in Salehurst, Sussex.  He was the second son of Samuel Swift (1611-1660) and Constance Reade (1608-1659).  He died aged 75 years and was buried on 17 July 1710 in Wadhurst.  He did have a cousin Samuel Swift born in 1640, but given that the Samuel who died in 1710 was said to have been 75, I think it more likely he was the one born in 1636 rather than 1640, but I could be wrong.

Sarah Plasted was baptised on 28 January 1640/1 in Wadhurst.  She was the daughter of Henry Plasted (c1610-?) and Joan Zacre (c1610-?).

Samuel Swift and Sarah Plasted had 10 known children:

  1. Sarah Swifte was baptised on 13 April 1663 in Wadhurst.  Only her father's name was recorded against her baptism.  I have not found a marriage or burial for her in Wadhurst.

  2. Samuel Swifte was baptised on 20 October 1664 in Wadhurst.  Nothing more is so far known about Samuel.

  3. Henry Swifte was baptised on 1 February 1665/6 in Wadhurst.  Nothing more is so far known about Henry.

  4. Mary Swifte was baptised on 2 January 1667/8 in Wadhurst.  Nothing more is so far known about Mary.

  5. John Swift, my 8x Great Grandfather, was baptised on 11 November 1669 in Wadhurst.  He married twice.  Firstly to Priscilla Foster in 1695 then to 5 181 Elizabeth Kitchenham in 1708.  (They have their own page.)

  6. Thomas Swifte was baptised on 9 October 1672 in Wadhurst.  He may have been buried in Wadhurst on 15 May 1738, but only the name was recorded and nothing to help determine which Thomas Swift was buried.  Another Thomas Swift was born in 1676 in Salehurst to John Swift (1746-1705) and Ann.  And yet another Thomas Swift was born in 1700.

  7. Rebekah Swifte was baptised on 7 February 1673/4 in Wadhurst.

As Rebecca Swift she married William Young by licence on 28 February 1703/4 in Wadhurst.

  8. Robert Swift was baptised 24 May 1677 in Wadhurst.  He married Lydia Noakes in 1702.  (They have their own page.)

  9. George Swift was baptised 23 November 1679 in Wadhurst.  He married Mary Clarke in 1716.  (They have their own page.)

  10. Richard Swifte was baptised on 17 February 1681/2 in Wadhurst and buried there on 28 June 1696.
