Samuel SWIFT (1611-1660)

and Constance READE (1608-1659)

Samuel Swift and Constance Reade were my 10x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see their place in my pedigree chart.)  They married on 22 May 1634 at the parish church of St. Mary the Virgin in Salehurst, Sussex.

Samuel Swift was baptised on 1 September 1611 in Salehurst.  He was the eldest son and child of Samuel Swifte (c1590-1633) and Alice Eliot (c1590-1646).  He was mentioned in this father's will of 1633.  Samuel was buried on 12 April 1660 in Salehurst.

Constance Reade was baptised on 25 September 1608 in Salehurst.  She was the daughter of Thomas Reade (c1580-1611) and Martha Woodland (1584-?).  She was buried on 28 January 1658/9 in Salehurst, when she was described as the wife of Samuel Swift.

Samuel Swift and Constance Reade had 10 known children:

  1. John Swift was baptised on 1 March 1634/5 in Salehurst.  He probably married Sarah before 1662.  (They have their own page.)

  2. 5 230 Samuel Swift, my 9x Great Grandfather, was baptised on 14 August 1636 in Salehurst.  He married  5 230 Sarah Plasted in 1662.  (They have their own page.)

  3. Constance Swift was baptised on 1 April 1638 in Salehurst.

  4. Priscilla Swift was baptised on 12 January 1639/40 in Salehurst.

  5. Thomas Swift was baptised on 5 December 1641 in Salehurst.  He or his cousin Thomas Swift born 1638, may have been buried on 3 July 1669 in Salehurst.  One of the cousins married and had a daughter Mary Swift baptised in 1662 in Salehurst.  No possible marriage for Thomas has been found in the Sussex IGI or the Sussex Family History Group's marriage index.  Nor, so far, have any further children fathered by Thomas been found.

  6. Henry Swift was baptised on 12 November 1643 in Salehurst.

  7. Robert Swifte was baptised on 22 February 1644/5 in Salehurst and buried there on 29 December 1647.  The burial register records he was the son of Samuel Swift, as he did have a cousin Robert Swift born in 1642.

  8. Martha Swifte was baptised on 11 October 1649 in Salehurst and buried there on 1 December 1649.

  9. Elizabeth Swift was baptised on 24 November 1650 in Salehurst.

  10. Joseph Swift was baptised on 16 October 1653 in Salehurst and buried their on 22 December 1653.
