Samuel SWIFTE (c1590-1633)

and Alice ELIOT (c1590-1646)

 

Samuel Swifte and Alice Eliot were my 10x and 11x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see their place in my pedigree chart as my 10x Great Grandparents.)  They married on 2 July 1611 in Salehurst, Sussex.

Samuel Swifte may have been born between about 1589 and 1593.  He was the son of John Swift (c1560-?) and Margery Brisley (c1565-?).  Although elder and younger siblings were baptised in Salehurst, Samuel does not appear to have been baptised there, unless he was missed from the register.  He was buried on 7 April 1633 in Salehurst.  Samuel made a will dated 1 April 1633 in which he was described as a Husbandman of Salehurst.  He left 40 shillings to his mother Margery Swift and also mentioned his brother-in-law John Elliot.

Alice Eliot was buried on 17 April 1646 in Salehurst, when she was described as the widow of Samuel Swift.  There were no Elliott's baptised in Salehurst between 1585 and 1595.  Might she have been baptised on 5 January 1588/9 in Ferring, Sussex and have been the daughter of Samuel Eliott and Joan Lawe?  Ferring to Salehurst is about 55 miles/90km.

 

Samuel Swifte and Alice Eliot had 3 known children:

  1. Samuel Swift, my 10x Great Grandfather, was baptised on 1 September 1611 in Salehurst.  He married Constance Reade in 1634.  (They have their own page.)

  2. John Swift, my 9x Great Grandfather, was baptised on 2 January 1613/4 in Salehurst.  He married Sarah Borner in 1634.  (They have their own page.)

  3. Elizabeth Swift was baptised on 4 February 1615/6 in Salehurst.

    Elizabeth married Henry Keyes on 8 October 1639 in Salehurst.

    Henry may have been baptised on 5 December 1614 in Ewhurst, Sussex, the son of John Keyes and possibly Joan Keswell.
