Richard SWIFT
(1703-1764)
and Sarah HOLMAN (?-1772)

Richard Swift
and Sarah Holman married before 1737. No possible marriage has been
found in the Sussex or Kent IGI, or the Sussex Family History Group's
marriage index. (They were not my direct ancestors.
Richard was the half brother of my 7x Great Grandmother,
Elizabeth
Swift.)
Richard Swift was baptised on 30 March 1703 in Wadhurst, Sussex.
He was the son of
John
Swift (1669-1730) and
Priscilla Foster (?-1706). Like
his father he was a victualler. He left a will dated 11 February 1764,
at which time he was of Lamberhurst. In his will, he mentioned his
wife Sarah and 2 children, Elizabeth and Thomas.
Sarah Holman's
date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me. She was the
daughter of Abraham Holman. She was buried on 21
February 1772 in Wadhurst. Her brother Abraham Holman, a
carpenter of Burwash, left a will dated 24 June 1757 in which he left
bequests to the children of his sisters, Sarah wife of Richard
Swift of Lamberhurst and Ann wife of Francis Turrell of
Wadhurst. Her father left a will dated 30 May 1751 and he left
bequests to his daughters Sarah Swift and Ann Turel.
Richard Swift and Sarah
Holman had 7 known children:
-
Elizabeth Swift was baptised on 1
January 1737/8 in Lamberhurst. She may have married Thomas Cramp
of Wadhurst on 18 November 1764 in Lamberhurst, Kent.
-
Samuel Swift was baptised on 11 May
1740 in Wadhurst.
-
Richard Swift was baptised on 29 November 1741 in Wadhurst, and
probably died young.
-
Thomas Swift was mentioned in his
father's will, but so far I haven't found his baptism. At the age of
10 years he may have been apprenticed to John Luck the younger of
Wadhurst, in husbandry. On 15 July 1794 he was described as the
eldest son of Thomas Swift yeoman of Lamberhurst and his wife
Sarah, both deceased.
Thomas
married Jane Summers by banns on 27 April 1767 in Wadhurst.
At the time Thomas was of Lamberhurst and Jane of Wadhurst. They
were both able to sign their names. The witnesses were William
Tolhurst and George Chapman who both signed their names.
The banns were published in Wadhurst on 8, 15 and 22 March 1767.
-
Henry Swift was baptised on 1 March
1746/7 in Wadhurst.
-
Sarah
Swift was baptised on 19 June 1749 in Lamberhurst. She may have
married William Latter on 26 October 1769 in Frant, Sussex, but she
did have a cousin named
Sarah
Swift born in 1733. Also, as she was not mentioned in her
father's will, she may have died before 1764.
-
Richard Swift was baptised on 1
January 1749/50 in Lamberhurst.
