John SWIFT
(1698-1757)
and Grace HOSMER (1705-?)

John
Swift and Grace Hosmer married
on 29 April 1729 in Frant, Sussex. At the time John was of
Wadhurst, Sussex and Grace of Mayfield, Sussex. (They were not my
direct ancestors. John was the half brother of my 7x Great
Grandmother,
Elizabeth
Swift.)
John Swift was baptised on 23 November 1698 in Wadhurst, Sussex.
He was the son of
John
Swift (1669-1730) and
Priscilla Foster (?-1706). John may have been buried on 15 January 1757 in
Wadhurst, but the burial register just records that John Swift was
buried. John was a cordwainer.
He
took on 3 apprentice cordwainers:
Thomas Cooper
son
of
John Cooper (deceased) in May 1738;
Edward Wilmeshurst
son of
Elizabeth Wilmeshurst
on 24 August 1743, both for a period of 7
years; and James Clerk son of Thomase Clerk husbandman of
Lamberhurst
Grace Hosmer
or Grace Hosmore was baptised on 25 July 1705 in
Mayfield. She was the daughter of Thomas Hosmore and Mary
Sevenokes. She died after March 1747.
John Swift and Grace Hosmer had 7 known children:

John Swift was baptised on 30 June
1730 in Wadhurst and probably died young.

Priscilla Swift was baptised on 5
August 1733 in Wadhurst. She married John Sands by banns on 30 April
1754 in Wadhurst. They were both of Wadhurst and both able to sign
their names. The witnesses were John Swift and George
Chapman who also both signed their names. The banns were
published on 14, 21 and 28 April 1754.

Grace Swift was baptised on 7 April
1735 in Wadhurst and probably died young.

Elizabeth Swift was baptised on 11
July 1736 in Wadhurst. She married Samuel Duplock by banns on
26 March 1758 in Wadhurst. They were both of Wadhurst and both
signed their names. The witnesses to the marriage were John
Winder (marked) and George Chapman (signed). The banns
were published in Wadhurst on 5, 12 and 19 March 1758, by the curate
David Morgan.

Jane Swift was baptised on 6 August
1738 in Wadhurst.

John Swift was baptised on 20
September 1741 in Wadhurst.

Grace Swift was baptised on 14 March
1746/7 in Wadhurst. She died aged 50 years on 27 February 1798 years was buried on 3 March 1798 in Lamberhurst,
Kent.
Grace married Nathaniel Hickmott by banns on 2 July 1769
in Wadhurst. They were both of Wadhurst and both signed their names.
The witnesses were John Rochester and John Swift who also
both signed their names.
Nathaniel was baptised on 10 December 1746 in
Lamberhurst and was the son Thomas Hickmott (1724-?) and
Elizabeth Inge (1726-?). Nathaniel died aged 86 years on 8
January 1832.
Nathaniel and Grace had 7 known children (2 sons and 5
daughters) 4 of whom were:

Elizabeth Hickmott was baptised on 14 January 1770 in Wadhurst.
She married Robert Smith by banns on 1 April 1793 in Wadhurst, when
they were both of Wadhurst. He was a bachelor who signed his name
whilst she was a spinster who made her X mark. The witnesses were
William Hunt and John Cooper who both signed their names.
Robert and Elizabeth couple had 3 known children:

Richard Smith was born on 4 September and baptised on 7 September
1796 in Wadhurst. He was buried there on 3 October 1797.

Richard Smith was baptised on 28 May 1799 in Wadhurst.

William Smith was born on 1 January 1801 and baptised on 2 February
1801 in Wadhurst. He died on 4 January 1867 and was buried on 10
January 1867 in Rotherfield, Sussex. He married Ansley Killick
on 18 November 1821 in Rotherfield. She was baptised on 13 January
1805 in Rotherfield and was the daughter of William Killick
(1761-1815) and Martha Foster (1770-1829). Ansely died on 17
November 1867 and was buried on 19 November 1867 in Rotherfield. The
couple had 13 known children.
Robert Smith may have been baptised on 22 March 1772 in Wadhurst,
the son of William Smith (1751-1811) and Sarah Ford.
But when the 1851 census was recorded Robert aged 80 was living in
Ticehurst with wife Ann aged 75. 1772 Robert was the Grandson
Robert
Smith (1710-1775) and
Elizabeth Swift (1710-1766), who were my 7x Great Grandparents.

Nathaniel Hickmott was baptised on 3 May 1778 in Lamberhurst.
He was buried on 9 September 1859 in Lamberhurst. He married Mary
Tomset on 25 December 1802 in Lamberhurst. Mary was born about
1778. She died age 46 years and was buried on 18 July 1824 in
Lamberhurst. The couple had 7 known children.

Priscilla Hickmott was baptised on 26 August 1781 in Frant, Sussex.

Richard Hickmott was baptised on 12 March 1786 in Lamberhurst.
