John SWIFT (1669-1730)

and Priscilla FOSTER (?-1706)

and Elizabeth KITCHENHAM (1683-1749)

John Swift and Elizabeth Kitchenham were my 8x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see their place in my pedigree chart.)  They married on 9 September 1708 in Wadhurst, Sussex.  This was John's second marriage.  At the time John was aged about 39 years with 3 young sons aged about 5, 8 and 10.  Elizabeth was nearly 25 years old.  John and Elizabeth had 18 known grandchildren.  John had first married Priscilla Foster on 10 October 1695 in Wadhurst.  John and Priscilla had 21 known grandchildren.

John Swift was baptised on 11 November 1669 in Wadhurst.  He was the third son and fifth child of Samuel Swift (1636-1710) and Sarah Plasted (1641-?).  He was a husbandman and a victualler.  He was buried on 16 October 1730 in Wadhurst.  He left a will in which he was described as a husbandman (click here to read my transcript of his will).  In his will he only mentioned sons John, Thomas, Richard and Samuel and wife Elizabeth.  There was another John Swift born in 1671, but he was born in Salehurst, so I am fairly confident that Wadhurst John was the one who married Priscilla and Elizabeth.

Priscilla Foster's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  She was buried on 14 April 1706 in Wadhurst.  The burial register does not give the cause of death or her age.  So far I have checked the baptism registers' of Wadhurst, Mayfield, Frant, Ticehurst and Salehurst, but nothing found.  There were Foster families in Mayfield and Ticehurst, but no Priscilla.

Elizabeth Kitchenham was born in about January 1682/3 and baptised on 18 November 1687 in Wadhurst, aged 4 years and 10 months.  She was the eldest daughter and second child of John Kitchenham (1660-1718) and Mary Baker.  She was the sole executrix of her husband's will.  Elizabeth left a will dated 1749, in which she mentioned daughters Elizabeth, Mary and Sarah and sons George and Samuel.

John Swift and Priscilla Foster had 5 known children:

  1. Elizabeth Swift was baptised on 11 November 1695 in Wadhurst and buried there on 10 December 1704.

  2. Samuel Swift was baptised on 9 May 1697 in Wadhurst and buried there on 16 May 1697.

  3. John Swift was baptised on 23 November 1698 in Wadhurst.  He married Grace Hosmer in 1729.  (They have their own page.)

  4. Thomas Swift was baptised on 1 January 1700/1 in Wadhurst.  He married Elizabeth Baitupp in 1723.  (They have their own page.)

  5. Richard Swift was baptised on 30 March 1703 in Wadhurst.  He married Sarah in about 1737.  (They have their own page.)

John Swift and Elizabeth Kitchenham had 7 known children:

  1. Mary Swift was baptised on 24 July 1709 in Wadhurst and buried there on 9 January 1709/10.  Her father was a husbandman at the time of her baptism.

  2. Elizabeth Swift, my 7x Great Grandmother, was baptised on 2 November 1710 in Wadhurst.  She married 5 180 Robert Smith.  (They have their own page.)

  3. Mary Swift was baptised on 16 January 1712/3 in Wadhurst.  She did not marry.  She was buried on 22 February 1771 in Wadhurst.  Her will was dated 7 May 1764 and mentions sister Sarah, spinster and brother Samuel with whom Mary and Sarah lived.

  4. Sarah Swift was baptised on 15 October 1715 in Wadhurst and at the time of her baptism her father was described in the baptism register as victualler.  She did not marry.

  5. Samuel Swift was baptised on 24 March 1717/8 in Wadhurst.  He married Esther Eastwood in 1746.  (They have their own page.)

  6. Henry Swift was baptised on 7 July 1720 in Wadhurst and his father was then described in the baptism register as an alehouse keeper.  Henry may have died young as he was not mentioned in either of his parents' wills.  However, a Henry Swift married Elizabeth Winder on 27 April 1749 in Wadhurst, and 1720 Henry would seem to be to only possible candidate.  Elizabeth was baptised on 26 December 1725 in Wadhurst and was the daughter of John Winder (1699-?) and Deborah Lambert (1699-?).  Henry and Elizabeth had 2 known sons:  John Swift born in 1750 and Henry Swift in 1754.  Both Henry and Elizabeth were alive in 1757, as on 16 May that year Henry made his will.

  7. George Swift was baptised on 10 March 1722/3 in Wadhurst and his father was then a victualler.  He may have married:

Mary Lamberd on 25 June 1742 in Wadhurst

Ann Rabbett on 16 May 1745 in Wadhurst

Elizabeth Walter on 20 April 1749 in Wadhurst

I have not found any children baptised to George and Mary.  George and Ann had 9 children.  George and Elizabeth had 3 children.  George did have 2 cousins:  George Swift born in 1715 (who I think married Ann Rabbett) and George Swift born in 1720.
