John SWIFT (1646-1705)

and Ann (?-1705)

 

John Swift and Ann were my 8x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see their place in my pedigree chart.)  They may have married sometime before or about 1669 and possibly in, or near, Salehurst, Sussesx.  No possible marriage has been found in the Sussex marriage index or the IGI.  John may have first married Frances Wyatt on 16 April 1666 in Salehurst.  There were no known children from this first marriage.

John Swift was probably baptised on 13 September 1646 in Salehurst, Sussex, the son of John Swift (1613-?) and Sarah Borner.  He was buried on 11 January 1704/5 in Brede, Sussex.  There was also a John Swift baptised on 1 March 1634/5 in Salehurst, the son of Samuel Swift (1611-1660) and Constance Reade (1608-1659).  I think the elder John married Sarah before 1662 (possibly Sarah Boarne in 1656).  Sarah, married to John, was buried in October 1668, and given that John and Ann had a daughter baptised in July 1669, I don't think Sarah's John then married Ann.

Frances Weyet was baptised on 5 November 1643 in Rye, Sussex.  She was the daughter of James Wyat (1613-?) and Mary Wood, who had married on 12 October 1635 in Burwash, Sussex.  Frances was buried on 17 June 1667 in Salehurst.

Ann's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  She was buried on 14 April 1705 in Brede and the burial register recorded that she was a widow.

On 14 October 1693, John Swift of Brede leased a parcel of waste ground of about a 1/4 acre on which stood the cottage in which he dwelt.  It was near a field of Frewen's called Stepe or the Steep-field in Brede.  The lease was for 100 years at peppercorn rent, in consideration of 10 shillings by Edward Frewen of Putney, Surrey.  (Ref. A2A FRE/7449)

 

John Swift and Ann had 6 known children:

  1. Sarah Swift was baptised on 11 July 1669 in Salehurst.  Both her parent's names were recorded in the the baptism register

  2. John Swift was baptised on 10 September 1671 in Salehurst.  Only his father's name was recorded in the baptism register.  There was another John Swift born in 1669.

  3. Samuel Swift was baptised on 8 December 1672 in Salehurst.  Both his parent's names were recorded in the baptism register.

  4. Thomas Swift was baptised on 28 April 1676 in Salehurst.  Both his parent's names were recorded in the baptism register.  He may have married Mary Brooke in 1697.  (They have their own page.)

  5. Robert Swift was baptised on 13 November 1678 in Salehurst.  Both his parent's names were recorded in the baptism register.  There was another Robert Swift in 1677.

    As Robert Swifte he married Mary Medhurst by licence on 7 February 1711/2 in Battle, Sussex.  They were both then of Brede.

    Mary was buried on 16 January 1721 in Brede and it was noted in the burial register that she was the wife of Robert.

    Robert and Mary had the following children:

    1. Mary Swift was born and baptised on 25 December 1712 in Brede.  Mary may have married William Catt on 17 August 1732 in Westfield, Sussex.

    2. Ann Swift was baptised on 19 December 1714 in Brede.

    3. Elizabeth Swift was baptised on 30 March 1717 in Brede.

    4. Margaret Swift was baptised on 20 February 1719/20 in Brede.

  6. Elizabeth Swift, my 7x Great Grandmother, was baptised on 18 January 1680/1 in Salehurst.  Both her parent's names were recorded in the baptism register.  She married Henry Fuller in 1714.  (They have their own page.)
