John SWIFT
(c1560-?)
and Margery BRISLEY (c1565-?)

John Swift
and Margery Brisley were my 11x and 12x Great Grandparents. They
married on 2 February 1586/7 at the parish church of St. Mary the Virgin in Salehurst, Sussex.
John Swift, I would guess was born in about the 1560's. He may
have been buried on 6 June 1612 in Salehurst, but the burial register just
records a name and no further details to help confirm whether it was John
senior or his son. However, John may have died before 1633 as in that
year his son Samuel died and in his will he mentioned his mother Margery,
but not his father. No will has so far been found for John for 1612 or
any other date.
Margery Brisley, I would also guess was born in about the 1560's.
She died after 1633.
John Swift and Margery Brisley had 5 known children:
-
John Swift
was baptised on 3 December 1587 in Salehurst. No possible marriage
has been found for him in either the Sussex IGI or the Sussex Family
History Group's marriage index, so the 1612 burial (noted above) may have
been for him.
-
Samuel Swifte, my
10x and 11x Great Grandfather,
may have been born between 1589 and 1593. He married
Alice Eliot
in 1611. (They have their own page.)
-
Dorithie Swift
was baptised on 6 January 1594/5 in Salehurst. As Dorothy
daughter of John Swifte, she may have been buried on 24 February
1619 in Salehurst.
-
George Swift
was baptised on 6 January 1594/5 in Salehurst. No possible marriage
has been found for him in the Sussex IGI or the Sussex Family History
Group's marriage index. There is no indication in the baptism
register that he and Dorothy were twins, but I am guessing they were and
perhaps George died at, or soon, after birth.
-
Elizabeth
Swift was baptised on 13 April 1600 in Salehurst. As
Elizabeth Swifte, did she marry Simon Read on 5 September 1625
in Burwash, Sussex? Or as Elizabeth Swifth, did she marry
Thomas Shingfeild on 23 November 1628 in Withyham, Sussex.
According to the IGI, Simon Reade was buried on 29 April 1638 in
Salehurst. Incidentally, Elizabeth's nephew, Samuel Swift
(1611-1660) married Constance Reade, daughter of Thomas Reade
of Salehurst. Might there have been some connection between the
Reade families?
