Jenner STRINGER (1746-1834)

and Sarah NEWMAN (c1747-1813)

Jenner Stringer and Sarah Newman married by banns on 10 July 1768 in Horsham, Sussex.  He was then a husbandman of Shipley and she of Horsham.  The witnesses to their marriage were James Newman and James Chart.  (They were not my direct ancestors.)

Jenner Stringer was baptised on 19 February 1746 in West Grinstead, Sussex.  He was the son of Richard Stringer (1699-1780) and Katherine Jenner (1710-1768).  A transcript of the baptism register records that his mother's name was Queen.  He died aged 91 years and was buried on 13 March 1834 in West Grinstead.

Sarah Newman was born about 1747.  She died aged 66 years and was buried on 31 January 1813 in West Grinstead.  The burial register recorded that she was the wife of Jenner Stringer.  Might she have been baptised on 10 January 1747/8 in Slinfold, Sussex, the daughter of John Newman and Sarah?  John and Sarah did have a son named James Newman who may have been a witness to Jenner and Sarah's marriage.

Jenner Stringer and Sarah Newman had 13 known children:

1. Sarah Stringer was baptised on 18 December 1768 in Itchingfield.

2. Thomas Stringer was baptised on 9 September 1770 in West Grinstead.

   Thomas may have married Mary Agate by banns on 5 June 1798 in West Grinstead.  He was then of Ashurst.  The witnesses to the marriage were Samuel Dubbins and William Gratwick.

   Thomas and Mary had the following children:

   1. Mary Stringer was baptised on 9 December 1798 in West Grinstead.

   2. Sarah Stringer was baptised on 20 July 1806 in West Grinstead.

   3. Jane Stringer was baptised on 21 August 1808 in West Grinstead.

   4. Peter Stringer was baptised on 26 March 1815 in West Grinstead.

   5. Harriet Stringer was baptised on 31 May 1818 in West Grinstead.

   6. William Stringer was baptised on 23 July 1826 in West Grinstead.

3. Jenner Stringer was baptised on 7 June 1772 in West Grinstead.

   Jenner married Frances Cherryman by licence on 31 July 1799 in West Grinstead.  The witnesses to their marriage were John Carter and Daniel Elmer.  Their marriage licence was issued on 30 July 1799 by the Archdeaconry of Chichester.  It recorded that he was a 28 year old bachelor and labourer of West Grinstead.  Frances was a minor and married with the consent of Thomas Cherryman who was a labourer.

   Frances was baptised on 20 May 1781 in West Grinstead and was the daughter of Thomas Cherryman and Frances Fiest.  She died aged 46 years and was buried on 20 April 1828 in West Grinstead.

   Jenner and Frances had the following (known to me) children:

   1. Thomas Stringer was baptised on 15 December 1799 in West Grinstead.

   2. James Stringer was baptised on 19 July 1801 in West Grinstead.

   3. Emily Stringer was baptised on 5 March 1803 in West Grinstead.

   4. Elizabeth Stringer was baptised on 7 April 1805 in West Grinstead.

   5. Lucy Stringer was baptised on 2 November 1806 in West Grinstead.

4. Elizabeth Stringer was baptised on 26 March 1774 in West Grinstead.

   Elizabeth married Abraham Randal by banns on 2 July 1805 in West Grinstead.  He was then of Ashington.  The witnesses to their marriage were ? Freemen and William Gratwick.

5. Frances Stringer was baptised on 7 January 1776 in West Grinstead.

   Frances had the following daughter:

   1. Mary Stringer was born in 1796 in Shipley.

6. Richard Stringer was baptised on 4 December 1777 in West Grinstead.

   Richard may have married Ann Beeching by banns on 4 May 1801 in West Grinstead.  He was then a bachelor and she a spinster and they were both of West Grinstead.  The witnesses to their marriage were John Stringer and Catherine Stringer.

   Richard and Ann had the following children:

   1. Mary Stringer was baptised on 24 October 1802 in West Grinstead.

   2. Harriet Stringer was baptised on 12 June 1804 in West Grinstead.

      Harriet married John Muzzall by banns on 28 December 1829 in Henfield.  She was a spinster and he a bachelor and they were both of Henfield.

      At the time of the 1841 census the family were living at Catsfold in Henfield.  Also with them on census night were Anne Bristow a 60 year old nurse, 17 year old servant Elizabeth Elliott, 25 year old servant Samuel Stelaway (my 3x great grandfather) and 15 year old servant Francis Nye.  When the 1851 census was recorded the couple and 8 children were living at Catsfold.  John was then a 47 year old farmer of 112 acres and employing 5 labourers.  Harriet was 46 years old.  Also with them on census night was unmarried 22 year old agricultural labourer and servant, Isaiah Mansell.

      John and Harriet had the following children:

      1. Mary Muzzall was born about 1830 in Henfield.  In 1841 she was 10 years old.  She was an unmarried 20 year old in 1851 and living at home.

      2. Sarah Ann Muzzall was baptised on 22 January 1832 in Henfield.  In 1841 she was 9 years old.  She married Thomas Warden on 30 June 1857 in Henfield.  Thomas was baptised on 5 January 1834 in Henfield and was the son of Thomas Warden (c1792-18670 and Mary Ann Dowlen (c1797-1871).

      3. Rebecca Muzzall was baptised on 31 March 1833 in Henfield.  In 1841 she was 8 years old.  She was 18 years old in 1851 and living at home.

      4. John Muzzall was born about 1835.  He was 6 years old at the time of the 1841 census.

      5. Isaac Muzzall was born about 1836 in Henfield.  In 1841 he was 5 years old.  He was 15 years old in 1851 and living at home.

      6. Eliza Muzzall was born about 1838 in Henfield.  In 1841 she was 3 years old.  She was a 13 year old scholar in 1851.

      7. Ann Muzzall was born about 1840 in Henfield.  In 1841 she was a year old.  She was an 11 year old scholar in 1851.  Ann married the famous taxidermist Mr. Walter Potter.  (Thanks to Caroline Harlow for passing on that Ann married Walter.)

      8. Thomas Muzzall was born about 1842 in Henfield.  The 1841 census records that an unnamed son was 2 weeks old.  He was a 9 year old scholar in 1851.

      9. Henry Muzzall was born about 1844 in Henfield.  He was a 7 year old scholar in 1851.

      10. Elizabeth Muzzall was born about 1847 in Henfield.  She was 3 years old in 1851.

   3. George Stringer was baptised on 20 October 1805 in West Grinstead.

   4. William Stringer was baptised on 26 December 1807 in West Grinstead.

   5. John Stringer was baptised on 6 June 1810 in West Grinstead.

   6. Henry Stringer was baptised on 27 January 1812 in West Grinstead.

   7. James Stringer was baptised on 7 July 1816 in West Grinstead.

   8. Anne Stringer was baptised on 7 December 1817 in West Grinstead, at which time her father was a weaver.

   9. Elizabeth Stringer was baptised on 5 December 1819 in West Grinstead, at which time her father was a weaver.

7. Edward Stringer was baptised on 19 September 1779 in West Grinstead.  He died aged 81 years and was buried on 6 January 1861 in West Grinstead.

   Edward married Zilpah Venn by banns on 23 October 1805 in West Grinstead.  The witnesses to their marriage were William Stringer and Sarah Stringer.

   Zilpah died aged 56 years and was buried on 17 January 1841 in West Grinstead, therefore, she was born about 1785.

   Edward and Zilpha had the following children:

   1. Jane Stringer was baptised on 1 April 1806 in West Grinstead.

   2. Sarah Stringer was baptised on 17 July 1808 in West Grinstead.

   3. Eliza Stringer was baptised on 1 July 1810 in West Grinstead.

   4. Elizabeth Stringer was baptised on 4 October 1812 in West Grinstead.

   5. Henry Stringer was baptised on 27 April 1817 in West Grinstead, at which time his father was a labourer from Shipley.

8. William Stringer was baptised on 27 May 1781 in West Grinstead.  He died aged 88 years and was buried on 27 January 1870 in West Grinstead.

   William married Sarah Bellchamber by banns on 26 September 1808 in West Grinstead.  The witnesses to their marriage were William Moor and William Gratwick.

   William and Sarah had the following children:

   1. Lucy Stringer was baptised on 20 May 1810 in West Grinstead.

   2. James Stringer was baptised on 2 June 1811 in West Grinstead.

   3. William Stringer was baptised on 2 October 1814 in West Grinstead, at which time his father was a bricklayer from Shipley.

9. Solomon Stringer was baptised on 26 January 1783 in West Grinstead.  He married Mary Cherryman in 1805.  (They have their own page.)

10. Ann Stringer was baptised on 15 January 1786 in West Grinstead.

11. Lucy Stringer was baptised on 31 August 1788 in West Grinstead.  She died aged 58 years and was buried on 25 November 1846 in West Grinstead.

    Lucy married Thomas Smith by banns on 15 August 1811 in Ashurst.  She was then a spinster of West Grinstead and he a bachelor of Ashurst.  The witnesses to their marriage were William Baytopp and Charlotte Stringer.

    Thomas may have died aged 82 years in Brighton and have been buried on 22 October 1865 in West Grinstead, therefore, born about 1783.

    Thomas and Lucy had the following children:

    1. Mary Smith was baptised on 7 March 1813 in Ashurst.  The baptism register noted that her father was a labourer.

       Mary married Nicholas West by banns on 9 April 1842 in Horsham.  He was a bachelor and labourer and she a spinster.  Their fathers were named as John West a farmer and Thomas Smith a labourer.  The witnesses to their marriage were James Kempshall and Eliza Smith.

    2. Sarah Smith was baptised on 27 August 1815 in West Grinstead.  The baptism register noted that her father was a labourer.

    3. Jane Smith was baptised on 21 December 1817 in West Grinstead.  The baptism register noted that her father was a labourer.

    4. John Smith was baptised on 27 February 1820 in West Grinstead.  The baptism register noted that his father was a labourer.  He may have died aged 48 years and have been buried on 23 June 1867 in West Grinstead.

    5. Elizabeth Smith was baptised on 24 February 1822 in West Grinstead.  The baptism register noted that his father was a labourer.

    6. Thomas Smith was baptised on 20 March 1825 in West Grinstead.  The baptism register noted that his father was a labourer.

12. James Stringer was baptised on 2 June 1790 in West Grinstead.  He married Sarah Knight in 1820.  (They have their own page.)

13. Charlotte Stringer was baptised on 17 February 1793 in West Grinstead.

    Charlotte married Peter Allen by banns on 23 October 1816 in Ashurst.  She was then a spinster from West Grinstead and he a bachelor of Ashurst.

A James Stringer died aged 76 years as a result of a fall from a hawthorn bush and was buried on 11 October 1868 in West Grinstead, therefore, he was born about 1792.  That James may have been baptised on 9 September 1792 in West Grinstead, the son of Edward Stringer and Mary Aylwood.  When the 1841 census was recorded James was a 48 year old agricultural labourer, living in the home of 50 year old Thomas Truselor in the village of Portslade, Sussex.  In 1861 James was a 68 year old widower and agricultural labourer and living with his son James at Bines in West Grinstead.

James may have married Jane Trusler by banns on 29 November 1816 in Portslade.  He was a bachelor and she a spinster.

Jane died aged 35 years and was buried on 8 July 1828 in West Grinstead, therefore, she was born about 1793.

James and Jane had the following children:

1. James Stringer was baptised on 20 April 1817 in West Grinstead.

   When the 1861 census was recorded, James was a 44 year old farm bailiff and living at Bines in West Grinstead along with his 48 year old wife Esther from Henfield, father James, cousin Jane Aylard a 29 year old house servant from West Grinstad and 20 year old lodger and agricultural labourer Daniel Goacher from Shipley.

   As a 51 year old widower he married Jane Oliver by licence on 1 September 1868 in West Grinstead.  She was a 23 year old spinster.  James was then a farm bailiff.  Their fathers were named as James Stringer and William Oliver.  The witnesses to their marriage were Alfred Styles and Elizabeth Styles.

2. Anne Stringer was baptised on 31 January 1819 in West Grinstead.

3. Sarah Stringer was baptised on 28 January 1821 in West Grinstead.
