Henry STRINGER (1851-1923)

and Esther DOWLEN (1845-1918)

Henry Stringer and Esther Dowlen married on 2 April 1870 in Henfield, Sussex.  The witnesses to their marriage were William Stringer and Ann West Coles.  (They were not my direct ancestors.  Esther was the sister of my 2x great grandfather, Charles Dowlen.)

Harry Stringer was baptised on 14 November 1851 in West Grinstead, Sussex.  He was the son of Solomon Stringer (1824-1894) and Emily Baker (1828-1880).  Henry died aged 71 years and his death was registered in the first quarter of 1823 in the Steyning registration district.

Esther Dowlen was born on 6 August 1845 in Henfield, Sussex.  She was the daughter of John Dowlen (1802-1875) and Elizabeth Mansbridge (1808-1879).  Esther died aged 75 years (as per the GRO inded) and her death registered in the fourth quarter of 1918 in the Steyning registration district.

In 1881 the couple and 3 sons (Frederick, William and George) were living in Mile Oak, Portslade.  Henry was a 31 year old agricultural labourer and Esther was 36.  He gave his place of birth as West Grinstead and she as Henfield.

When the 1891 census was recorded the couple and 6 children (Frederick H., William, George E., Harriet E., Florence K. and Annie) were living in a cottage near the Ship Inn in Southwick.  Henry was then a 42 year old farm labourer and Esther was 47.

By 1901 the couple and 2 daughters (Florence K. and Annie) were living at Summers Dean in Edburton, Sussex.  Henry was a 49 year old foreman on a farm and Esther was 51.  Also with the family was 16 year old boarder, George Skinner who was a carter boy from Brighton.

Henry Stringer and Esther Dowlen had 6 known children:

  1. Frederick Henry Stringer was born in the third quarter of 1870 in Washington, Sussex.  In 1881 he was an 11 year old agricultural labourer.  In 1891 he was a 20 year old farm carter.  He died aged 82 years and his death was registered in the fourth quarter of 1952 in the Brighton registration district.

Frederick Henry married Harriet Osborne in the second quarter of 1900 in the Steyning registration district.

In 1901 the couple were living at 6 Mariners Terrance (west side of street) in Southwick.  Frederick was then a 30 year old coal carman and Harriet was 31.  He gave his place of birth as Washington and she as Petworth.

  2. William Stringer was born about 1876 in Brighton.  In 1881 he was 5 years old and in 1891 he was 15.  William married Margaret Gray in 1898.  She was born in about 1877 in Amberley, Sussex.  By 1901 they had 2 children.

  3. George Ernest Stringer was born in the third quarter of 1879 in Hove, Sussex.  At the time of the 1881 census he was a year old.  In 1891 he was an 11 year old scholar.  He died aged 21 years and his death was registered in the first quarter 1901 in the Steyning registration district.

  4. Harriet E. Stringer was born about 1883 in Portslade.  She was an 8 year old scholar in 1891.  Her birth may have been registered as Harriet Emily Stringer in the second quarter of 1882 or as Harriet Emma Stringer in the third quarter of 1882.  Both births were registered in the Steyning registration district.

  5. Florence Kate Stringer was born in the first quarter of 1885 in Portslade.  She was a 6 year old scholar in 1891.  In 1901 she was 16 years old.
