Henry Stringer and Esther Dowlen married
on 2 April 1870 in Henfield, Sussex. The
witnesses to their marriage were
Ann West Coles.
(They were not my direct ancestors. Esther was the sister of my 2x
great grandfather, Charles Dowlen.)
Harry Stringer was baptised on 14 November 1851 in West
He was the son of
Baker (1828-1880). Henry died aged 71 years and his
death was registered in the first quarter of 1823 in the Steyning
Esther Dowlen was
born on 6 August 1845 in Henfield,
Sussex. She was the daughter of
(1808-1879). Esther died aged 75 years (as per the GRO inded) and
her death registered in the fourth quarter of 1918 in the Steyning
the couple and 3 sons (Frederick, William and George) were living in Mile
Oak, Portslade. Henry was a 31 year old agricultural labourer and
Esther was 36. He gave his place of birth as West Grinstead and
she as Henfield.
When the 1891 census was recorded the couple and 6 children (Frederick H.,
William, George E., Harriet E., Florence K. and Annie) were living in a
cottage near the Ship Inn in Southwick. Henry was then a 42 year
old farm labourer and Esther was 47.
By 1901 the
couple and 2 daughters (Florence K. and Annie) were living at Summers
Dean in Edburton, Sussex. Henry was a 49 year old foreman on a
farm and Esther was 51. Also with the family was 16 year old
boarder, George Skinner who was a carter boy from
Henry Stringer and Esther Dowlen had 6 known children:
Stringer was born
in the third quarter of 1870 in Washington, Sussex. In 1881 he was an 11 year old
agricultural labourer. In 1891 he was a 20 year old farm carter.
He died aged 82 years and his death was registered in the fourth quarter
of 1952 in the Brighton registration district.
Frederick Henry married
Harriet Osborne in the second quarter of 1900 in the
Steyning registration district.
In 1901 the couple were
living at 6 Mariners Terrance (west side of street) in Southwick.
Frederick was then a 30 year old coal carman and Harriet was 31.
He gave his place of birth as Washington and she as Petworth.
was born about
1876 in Brighton. In 1881 he was 5 years old and in 1891 he was
15. William married Margaret Gray in 1898.
She was born in about 1877 in Amberley, Sussex. By 1901 they had 2
Ernest Stringer was born in the
third quarter of 1879 in
Hove, Sussex. At the time of the 1881 census he was a year old.
In 1891 he was an 11 year old scholar. He died aged 21 years and his death was registered
in the first quarter 1901 in the Steyning registration district.
E. Stringer was born about 1883 in Portslade.
She was an 8 year old scholar in 1891. Her birth may have been
registered as Harriet Emily Stringer in the second
quarter of 1882 or as Harriet Emma Stringer in the
third quarter of 1882. Both births were registered in the Steyning
was born in the first quarter of 1885 in Portslade.
She was a 6 year old scholar in 1891. In 1901 she was 16 years
Stringer was born in the fourth
quarter of 1888 in Portslade. When the 1891 census was recorded
she was 2 years old. In 1901 she was 12 years old.
