William STICKLAND (1618-1670)

and Elizabeth CRIPSE (1626-1697)

William Stickland and Elizabeth Cripse were my 9x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see their place in my pedigree chart.)  They may have married on 9 July 1650 in Horsted Keynes, Sussex, or at St. Thomas the Apostle in London.

Lightlands, photo taken from http://www.ancestraljigsaws.co.uk/lightlands.htmWilliam Stickland was baptised on 12 May 1618 in Alton St Pancras, Dorset.  He was the son of John Stickland and Edith Freke.  He was buried on 3 June 1670 in Frant, Sussex as William Stickland, gent.  His will was proved on 5 July 1670.  William was apprenticed to Mr. Thomas Glover and admitted into the Ironmongers Company of London.  In 1657 he purchased the property Lightlands in the parish of Frant, Sussex from John Alchorne.  (Lightlands was built by Nicholas Fowle, my 12x Great Grandfather and his son William Fowle, my 11x Great Grandfather.)  Lightlands then comprised of 100 acres.  Two years later William added to his property by purchasing Knowle Mill and Marlings from John Baker and other fields in the locality.  (See "Frant - A Parish History", by Henry S. Eeles a copy of which can be viewed on The Weald web site.)

Elizabeth Cripse was baptised on 11 October 1626 in East Grinstead, Sussex.  She was the daughter of John Cripse (c1590-?), of Horsted Keynes, and Susan Stretfield.  She was buried on 1 April 1696 or 1697 in Wadhurst.  Elizabeth was appointed the sole executrix of her husband's will.  She was also mentioned, although not by name, in her son William's will of 1694, as grandmother, of his children.

William Stickland and Elizabeth Cripse had 8 known children:

  1. Susannah Stickland was baptised on 29 December 1651 in London.  She was named in her Grandfather John Crippís will of 1657 and that of her father.

Susannah married Robert Rosogan by licence on 27 July 1683 at St Mary Magdalanís, Old Fish Street, London.  The marriage licence was dated 26 June 1683.

Robert was a Citizen and Haberdasher of All Hallows, Honey Lane, London and was baptised on 20 September 1648.

Robert and Susannah had 3 known children:

    1. John Rosogan was baptised on 31 October 1684 in London.

    2. Thomas Rosogan was baptised on 18 June 1686 in Wadhurst and buried there on 20 December 1686.

  2. Elizabeth Stickland was baptised on 29 December 1653 in London.    She was buried on 25 October 1716 in Wadhurst.

Elizabeth married Edward Courthope on 8 August 1695 in Wadhurst.  Edward was a Citizen and Goldsmith of Saint Botophs, Bishopsgate, London.  At the time of their marriage Elizabeth was said to be a spinster aged 30 years and Edward a bachelor of 29 years.  Therefore, it would seem she was born about 1665.  However, she was mentioned in her father's will after her sister Susannah, but before her sister Mary.

Edward was baptised on 3 August 1665 in Wadhurst and buried there on 25 October 1716.

  3. Mary Stickland was baptised on 27 December 1655 in London.  She was buried on 17 October 1706 in Mayfield, Sussex.

Mary married Alexander Elliott by licence dated 3 February 1677.  Alexander was a yeoman of Mayfield.  At the time of their marriage Mary was a spinster aged 21 years and she married with her motherís concent.  Alexander was a bachelor of 24 years.

Alexander may have been the son of Alexander Elliott (1628-1675) and Mary Wilden, who married in 1650.  (Alexander senior was the son of my 10x Great Grandparents, 5 276 Alexander Elliott (1584-?) and 5 276 Constance Hepden (1596-1633).)   Alexander was an executor of his brother-in-law William Stricklandís will of 1694.  Alexander was buried on 28 April 1728 in Mayfield.

  5. Anna Stickland was baptised on 23 February 1659/60 in Frant.  She was buried on 8 November 1727 in Wadhurst.

Anne married John Barham, junior of Butts, on 26 June 1685 in Wadhurst.

John was baptised on 23 October 1656 in Wadhurst and was the son of John Barham (1617-1697) and Mary Ivore, widow (1625-1706).  He was buried on 13 June 1732 in Wadhurst.  John, junior, sold Great Butts, Wadhurst, in 1713.  He was an executor of his brother-in-law William Stricklandís Will of 1694.

  6. A stillborne daughter was buried on 7 February 1661/2 in Frant.

  7. John Stickland was baptised on 6 November 1663 in Frant and buried there on 20 August 1672.
