Robert STICKLAND (1731-1794)

and Elizabeth PETIT (1734-1816)

 

Robert Strickland and Elizabeth Petit were my 6x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see their place in my pedigree chart.)  They married on 2 February 1751/2 at the parish church of St. Peter and St. Paul in Wadhurst, Sussex.

Robert Stickland was baptised on 7 February 1730/1 at the parish church of St. Alban in Frant, Sussex.  He was the son of 5 175 Estmond Stickland (1683-1768) and 5 175 Mary Small (?-1778).  He was a farmer.  He died on 25 April 1794 at Bardown, Wadhurst and was buried on 30 April 1794 in Wadhurst.  He was mentioned in the 1772 will of his father-in-law Joseph Pettitt.  His own will was dated 1 June 1790 and proved on 21 May 1794 - click here to read my transcript of his will.

Elizabeth Petit was baptised on 15 December 1734 in Wadhurst.  She was the eldest child and daughter of 5 176 Joseph Pettitt (c1710-1773) and 5 176 Margaret King (c1711-1803).  Her father was a yeoman of Wadhurst.  She died aged 81 years on 10 March 1816 and was buried on 15 March 1816 in Wadhurst.  Elizabeth was mentioned in her father's will of 1772, by which she received 300.

A cricket match was played in Wadhurst on 9 June 1788 - I wonder if Robert went along to watch?

 

Robert Stickland and Elizabeth Petit had 9 known children:

  1. William Strickland was baptised on 1 May 1753 in Wadhurst and buried there on 8 January 1772.

  2. Elizabeth Stickland, my 5x Great Grandmother, was baptised on 28 February 1755 in Wadhurst.  She married Nicholas Barham in 1780.  (They have their own page.)

  3. John Strickland was born about 1758.  He was mentioned in his Grandfather Joseph Pettitt's will of 1772 and that of his father in 1790.

    John married his cousin Margaret Reed by banns on 21 February 1781 in Wadhurst.  John was a bachelor of Ticehurst and signed his name as John Stickland.  Margaret was a spinster of Wadhurst and signed her name.  The witnesses to the marriage were Nicholas Barham, Margaret Stickland and Thomas Cooper who all signed their names.

    Margaret was baptised on 10 January 1764 in Wadhurst and was buried there on 17 April 1799.  She was the daughter of Fullagar Reed and Margaret Petit.

    John and Margaret had 5 known children:

    1. John Strickland was baptised on 2 Febraury 1782 in Wadhurst and buried there on 27 February 1782.

    2. Elizabeth Stickland was baptised on 11 August 1784 in Wadhurst.  The baptism register records that here father was then a farmer.

    3. Joseph Strickland was baptised on 14 April 1789 in Wadhurst.

    4. Robert Stickland was baptised on 10 June 1792 in Wadhurst and buried there on 3 November 1804.  The baptism register records that his father was then a farmer.

    5. Margaret Stickland was born on 13 December 1794 and baptised on 2 February 1795 in Wadhurst.  The baptism register then recorded that her father was a shopkeeper.  She may have married James Stedman by banns on 16 May 1814 at St. John sub Castro in Lewes, Sussex.  At the time they were both of the parish of St. John sub Castro.

  4. Margaret Stickland was baptised on 13 April 1760 in Wadhurst.  She was left a legacy of 50 by the terms of her father's will.

    Before her marriage Margaret had an illegitimate son:

    1. John Strickland was baptised on 9 November 1784 in Ticehurst.

    Margaret married John Squires by licence on 11 August 1786 in Ticehurst.  They were both of Ticehurst and both signed their names.  The witnesses were Nicholas Barham (signed), Mary Stickland (mark) and Mary Crowther (signed).

    John was baptised on 28 June 1762 in Ticehurst.

    John and Margaret had 6 known children:

    1. Sarah Squires was baptised on 21 October 1787 in Ticehurst.

    2. Robert Squires was baptised on 11 January 1789 in Dallington.

    3. William Squires was baptised on 9 March 1792 in Dallington.

    4. Frances Squires was baptised on 2 April 1794 in Dallington.

    5. Joseph Squires was baptised on 20 May 1796 in Dallington.

    6. Mary Ann Squires was baptised on 6 June 1799 in Dallington.

  5. Estmond Stickland was baptised on 5 May 1763 in Wadhurst.  In 1803 he was a lame servant of Wadhurst.  He died aged 50 years and was buried on 13 July 1813 in Wadhurst.  He was mentioned in his father's will.

    Estmond married Martha Scott by banns on 7 July 1790 in Ticehurst.  They were both of Ticehurst and both made their X marks.  The witnesses were John Crouch and Elizabeth Crouch who both signed their names.  The banns were published on 20 and 27 June and 4 July 1790 in Ticehurst.

    Eastmond and Martha had 11 known children:

    1. Mary Stickland was baptised on 7 April 1792 in Ticehurst.

      Mary married Thomas Davis before or about 1810.

      Thomas and Mary had 11 known children:

      1. Philadelphia Davies was baptised on 18 Janaury 1811 in Wadhurst.

      2. John Davies was baptised on 15 December 1813 in Wadhurst.

      3. Mary Davies was baptised on 10 September 1815 in Wadhurst.

      4. Thomas Davies was baptised on 26 June 1817 in Wadhurst.

      5. Elizabeth Davies was baptised on 5 Septemmber 1819 in Wadhurst and died as an infant.

      6. David Davies was baptised on 17 July 1821 in Wadhurst.

      7. Elizabeth Davies was baptised on 17 July 1821 in Wadhurst.

      8. James Davies was baptised on 29 January 1823 in Wadhurst.

      9. Dorothy Ann Davies was baptised on 13 September 1824 in Wadhurst.

      10. Daniel Davies was baptised on 22 May 1826 in Wadhurst.

      11. Sampson Davies was baptised on 26 June 1829 in Wadhurst.

    2. Philadelphia Stickland was baptised on 24 February 1794 in Ticehurst.  She died before 1830.

      Philadelphia married James Richardson on 15 October 1814 in Wadhurst.

      James was born about 1794 in Wadhurst and was the son of James Richardson.  He was an agricultural labourer.  As a widower he married Sophia Clark on 7 May 1830.

      James and Philadelphia had 1 known daughter:

      1. Philadelphia Richardson was born in 1817 in Wadhurst.  She died in 1890.

        Philadelphia married Thomas Baker on 10 April 1827 in Brighton, Sussex.

    3. Eastmond Stickland was baptised on 17 July 1795 in Dallington.

    4. Robert Stickland was baptised on 16 July 1797 in Dallington.

    5. Martha Stickland was baptised on 31 July 1803 in Wadhurst and buried there on 9 September 1827.  She may have had an illegitimate son:

      1. William Strickland died aged 2 days and was buried on 23 March 1816 in Wadhurst.

    6. William Strickland was born about 1800 and baptised on 31 July 1803 in Wadhurst.  His baptism was recorded on the same day as his sister Martha, and followed her entry in the register.  He died aged 20 years and was buried in Wadhurst on 25 May 1820.

    7. John Stickland was baptised on 15 March 1805 in Wadhurst.

    8. Phebe Stickland was baptised on 26 July 1807 in Wadhurst.

    9. Anne Strickland was baptised on 19 April 1812 in Wadhurst.

    10. Eliza Strickland was born about 1811 and baptised on 19 April 1812 in Wadhurst.  Her baptism was record after that of her sister Anne in the registers.  She died aged 6 years and was buried on 22 September 1817 in Wadhurst.

  6. Mary Strickland was born about 1765.  She was mentioned in her father's will.

    Mary married Daniel Kettle by banns on 16 August 1787 in Ticehurst.  Mary was described as a spinster of Ticehurst and she made her X mark.  Daniel was also of Ticehurst and signed his name as Daniel Kettel.  The witnesses were John Stickland and Margaret Stickland who both signed their names.  The banns were published on 17 and 24 June and 1 July 1787 in Ticehurst.

    Daniel was baptised on 17 February 1765 in Ticehurst and he was the son of William Kettle and Frances Clyffe.  He was a farmer.

    Daniel and Mary had 5 known children:

    1. Daniel Kettle was baptised on 15 November 1789 in Ticehurst.

    2. William Kettle was baptised on 1 May 1792 in Ticehurst.

    3. Elizabeth Kettle was born on 26 October 1794 in Ticehurst and baptised at the Heathfield Independent Chapel on 13 January 1795.

    4. Elizabeth Wallis Kettle was baptised on 30 November 1803 in Wadhurst.

    5. Henry Kettle was baptised on 22 May 1809 in Ticehurst.

  7. Robert Strickland was baptised on 24 July 1768 in Wadhurst and buried there on 30 December 1771.  However, his baptism entry records his name as Jno.

  8. Joseph Strickland was baptised on 29 April 1772 in Wadhurst.  He married Ann Colvill in 1792.  (They have their own page.)

  9. Philly Strickland was baptised on 23 October 1778 in Wadhurst.  She was mentioned in her father's will.

    Philly married Thomas Wallis by banns on 29 November 1799 in Wadhurst.  He was a bachelor and she a spinster.  They were both of Wadhurst and both signed their names (she as Philly Stickland).  The witnesses were Thomas Colvill and Philly Barham who both signed their names.  The banns were published on 3, 10 and 17 November 1799 in Wadhurst.

    Thomas may have been baptised on 4 October 1778 in Wadhurst and have been the son of Thomas Wallis (1750-1836) and Mary Brooker (?-1780).

    I have checked the East Sussex Baptism Index and could not find any children born to Thomas and Philly.
