Estmond STICKLAND (1683-1768)

and Mary SMALL (c1695-1778)

Estmond Stickland and Mary Small were my 7x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see their place in my pedigree chart.)  They married on 20 February 1717 in Shipbourne, Kent.

Estmond Stickland was baptised on 15 November 1683 in Frant, Sussex.  He was the son of 5 206 William Stickland (1657-1694) and 5 206 Ann Estmond (1660-?).  In 1738 and 1740 he was a Churchwarden of Frant.  He was buried on 2 January 1768 in Frant.

Mary Smallís date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  She was buried on 16 January 1778 in Frant. 5 175

Estmond Stickland and Mary Small had 6 known children:

  1. Estmond Stickland was baptised on 22 January 1717/8 in Frant as Esmond.  He died aged 80 was buried on 13 February 1799 in Frant.  He left a will dated 7 May 1796.  Estmond inherited Lightlands in Frant, a property which had been purchased by his great grandfather, William Stickland, in 1657.  Estmond left the property to his nephew, Joseph Stickland.

Estmond married Sarah Weston by licence on 4 July 1760 in Frant.  They were both of Frant and both signed their names.  The witnesses were Robert Taylor and Thomas Appelbe who both signed their names.

Sarah died aged 75 years and was buried on 6 October 1798 in Frant.  She may have been baptised on 2 March 1724 in Etchingham, Sussex and have been the daughter of William Weston and Jane.  But given her age at marriage it is possible that she was a widow, although her status was not recorded in the marriage register.

  2. William Stickland was of Mayfield and was named in his brother Estmondís will of 1796.

  3. Mary Stickland was baptised on 11 October 1721 in Frant.  She died after 1796.

Mary married Thomas Rowles on 21 September 1747 in Pembury, Kent.

  4. Anne Stickland was baptised on 5 August 1725 in Frant.  She died after 1796.

Anne married William Rogers on 21 April 1749 in Pembury, Kent.

William and Ann had 6 known children:

    1. William Rogers was baptised on 11 June 1749 in Frant.

    2. Anne Rogers was baptised on 26 November 1750 in Wadhurst.  Did she marry Thomas Weston on 26 April 1770 in Ticehurst?

    3. John Rogers was baptised on 19 May 1755 in Wadhurst.

    4. Margaret Rogers was baptised on 4 June 1759 in Wadhurst.

    5. Philadelphia Rogers was baptised in August 1763 in Wadhurst.

    6. Robert Rogers was baptised on 11 March 1770 in Wadhurst.

  5. John Stickland was baptised on 2/7 February 1727/8 in Frant.  He was buried on 3 October 1783 in East Grinstead, Sussex.

John married Jane Finch on 15 November 1753 in the Fleet Prison, London.  He was then a bachelor and gent of East Grinstead and she was a spinster.

Jane was baptised on 5 February 1728 in East Grinstead and was the daughter of Richard Finch and Anne.  She was buried on 28 April 1790 in East Grinstead.

John and Jane had 6 known children:

    1. Anne Strickland was baptised on 18 March 1754 in East Grinstead.  She died after 1800 but before 1807 probably in Bath, Steuben County in New York state.

According to the Sussex marriage index, Ann married Thomas Streeter on 6 October 1776 in East Grinstead, at which time she was of Cowden, Kent and he of East Grinstead.  The index also records they married by banns on 14 October 1776 in Cowden, Kent, and that entry records Thomas was a bachelor and wheelwright of (East) Grinstead whilst Ann was a spinster of Cowden.  The witnesses to the Cowden marriage were Thomas Clifton and John Strickland.

The banns were published in East Grinstead on 22 and 29 September and 8 October, thus the recording of the marriage on 6 October has probably been mis-transcribed.

Thomas was born on 22/25 June 1753, probably at Dunnings Farm in East Grinstead, and baptised on 16 June 1754 at the parish church of St. Swithun in East Grinstead.  He was the son of William Streeter (?-1787) and Ann (?-1784) (they had married sometime before or about 1742).  He died on 18 September 1831 in Canisteo, New York.  As a widower he married Louisa.

Thomas and Ann emigrated to America in late 1794.

    2. John Strickland was baptised on 1 December 1755 in East Grinstead.  He was buried on 3 May 1835 in Ashwell, Hertfordshire.

John married Charlotte Bennet on 7 November 1781 in Ashwell.

Charlotte was baptised in Ashwell on 11 September 1763 and buried there on 1 June 1834.

John and Charlotte had 11 known children.

    3. Susannah Strickland was baptised on 27 January 1758 in East Grinstead.  She was buried there on 13 April 1832.

Susannah married James Todman by banns on 6 August 1786 in East Grinstead.  He was then a bachelor and she a spinster.

James was baptised on 8 August 1756 in East Grinstead and was the son of John Todman and Hannah.  He was buried on 20 April 1839 in East Grinstead.

James and Susannah had 4 known children.

    4. Elizabeth Strickland was baptised on 29 February 1760 in East Grinstead.

Elizabeth married James Stringer by banns on 7 November 1789 in West Hoathly, Sussex.  He was then of West Hoathly.

    5. Sarah Stickland was baptised on 26 August 1763 in East Grinstead and buried there on 10 January 1767.

    6. Daniel Strickland  was baptised on 13 October 1766 in East Grinstead.  He died about 1835 in Wheeler, New York.

    7. Mary Strickland was baptised on 3 January 1770 in East Grinstead and buried there on 2 March 1770.

  6. Robert St(r)ickland, my 6x Great Grandfather, was baptised on 7 February 1730/1 in Frant.  He married 5 98 Elizabeth Petit in 1752.  (They have their own page.)
