John STREETER (c1710-1783)

and Joan CLAYTON (1709-1773)

John Streeter and Joan Clayton may have been my 7x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see their possible place in my pedigree chart.)  They married by licence on 20 October 1734 in Wisborough Green, Sussex.  John was then of Pulborough, Sussex and Joan of Wisborough Green.

John Streeter's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me - see further below for some possible baptisms.  He was buried on 22 September 1783 in Crawley, Sussex.  John left a will dated 23 May 1778 and proved on 31 January 1784 (click here to read a transcript).  John was a witness to the 1772 will of William Heaver of Crawley.

Joan Clayton was baptised on 6 November 1709 in Rudgwick, Sussex.  She was the daughter of John Clayton and Sarah Napper (1681-?).  Joan was buried on 4 July 1773 in Crawley.

John Streeter and Joan Clayton had 10 known children:

  1. Mary Streeter was baptised on 24 August 1735 in Storrington, Sussex.  She was mentioned in her father's will as the widow of John Vigar.  They had married on 3 October 1752 in Horsham, Sussex.

  2. John Streeter was baptised on 1 June 1737 in Storrington.  He was appointed a joint executor of his father's will.  Did he marry Ann Shove on 1 July 1759 in Worth?  They were both then of Worth and the witnesses to their marriage were William Sanders and Russell Hall.

  3. Sarah Streeter was baptised on 16 March 1738/9 in Fletching, Sussex.  She was mentioned in her father's will as the wife of John Bridger a farmer of Rudgwick.  They had married on 1 June 1758 in Billingshurst, Sussex.  At that time John was of Rudgwick and Sarah of Billingshurst.  She married with the consent of her father.  The witnesses to their marriage were John Streeter and John Vigar.

  4. Anne Streeter was baptised on 20 February 1740 and or on 7 March 1740 in Worth.  She was mentioned in her father's will as the wife of William Bridger of Wisborough Green.  They had married on 27 May 1760 in Billingshurst.  Williams was then of Wisborough Green and Sarah of Billingshurst.  She married with the consent of her father.  The witnesses to their marriage were John Streeter and William Joynes.

  5. Elizabeth Streetor was born on 9 February 1742 in Worth.  She was mentioned in her father's will as the wife of John Knight a farmer of Worth.  John was also appointed a joint executor of his father-in-law's will.  John and Elizabeth married on 7 May 1767 in Worth.  He was then a bachelor and she a spinster and they were both of Worth.
