James STRETER (1811-?)

and Sarah PRATT (1814-?)

James Streeter and Sarah Pratt married by banns on 21 October 1833 in Rotherfield, Sussex.  He was a bachelor and she a spinster and they were both of Rotherfield.  The witnesses to their marriage were James Rogers and Mary Streeter.  (They were not my direct ancestors.)

James Streeter was born on 1 September 1811 and baptised on 20 October 1811 in Groombridge, Sussex.    He was the son of Thomas Streeter (1768-?) and Mary Reed.  His death may have been registered in the fourth quarter of 1854 in the Uckfield registration district.

Sarah Pratt was baptised on 28 August 1814 in Rotherfield.  She was the daughter of David Pratt (1793-?) and Sarah Card.

The 1841 census recorded that 36 year old Sarah Streeter was living in Crowborough with her 3 children (Sarah, Samuel and James).  She was then described as an agricultural labourer.

When the 1851 census was recorded, James and Sarah were living at Holly Bridge in Rotherfield along with 5 children (Sarah, Samuel, George, Mark and David).  He was then a 40 year old agricultural labourer and she was 37.  Also with them was 42 year old unmarried lodger and Chelsea Pensioner, William Streeter.  All were born in Rotherfield.

James Streeter and Sarah Pratt had 7 known children:

  1. Sarah Streeter was baptised on 22 March 1835 in Rotherfield.  As Sarah Ann Streeter she married George Comber in 1862.  They have their own page.)

  2. Samuel Streeter was born about 1837 in Rotherfield.  He was 4 years old in 1841.  In 1851 he was a 14 year old agricultural labourer.

  3. James Streeter was born on 9 November 1838 and baptised on 16 December 1838 in Rotherfield.  He was 2 years old in 1841.

  4. George Streeter was born about 1844 in Rotherfield.  He was a 7 year old scholar in 1851.  In 1861 he was a 17 year old agricultural labourer and lodging in the home of 28 year old George Pratt Friars Gate in Withyham.

  5. Mark Streeter was born about 1846/7 in Rotherfield and baptised on 27 April 1862 in Withyham.  He was 5 years old in 1851.  In 1861 he was a 14 year old servant and living in the home of his uncle George Pratt at Friars Gate in Withyham.

  6. David Streeter was born about 1849 in Rotherfield and baptised on 27 April 1862 in Withyham.  He was 2 years old in 1851.  In 1861 he was an 11 year old servant in the home of 38 year old Moses Pratt at the grocers shop in Withyham - Moses was David's uncle.

  7. Naomi Streeter was born about 1855 in Withyham.  In 1861 she was 5 years old and living in the home of her uncle Richard Mankelow at Sheep plain in Rotherfield.  When the 1871 census was recorded she was 16 years old and living in the home of her brother-in-law George Comber.
