James STREETER (1751-1820)

and Elizabeth HARDS (1750-1812)

 

James Streeter and Elizabeth Hards were my 6x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see their place in my pedigree chart.)  They married by banns on 8 October 1770 in Crawley, Sussex.  James was then a minor and Elizabeth was from Ifield, Sussex.  The witnesses were William Snelling and William Streeter.

James Streeter was baptised on 1 April 1751 in Worth, Sussex.  He was the son of John Streeter (1710-1783) and Joan Clayton (1709-1773).  James was mentioned in his father's will, by which he was left a legacy of fifty pounds.  He died aged 68 years and was buried on 8 June 1820 in Brighton, therefore, born about 1752.  The burial register noted that he was of Spring Gardens.

Elizabeth Hards was baptised on 27 January 1749/50 in Crawley, Sussex.  She was the daughter of Edward Hards (1719-1785) and Elizabeth.  She died aged 62 years and was buried on 13 April 1812 in Brighton.

 

James Streeter and Elizabeth Hards had 9 known children:

  1. Elizabeth Streeter was baptised on 12 March 1771 in Crawley.  She may have married James Sayers by banns on 30 September 1786 in Crawley.  They were both single.  The witnesses were James Streeter and Dedimah Sangust.

  2. Sarah Streater was baptised on 13 April 1772 in Crawley and buried there as an infant on 20 May 1772.

  3. Mary Streater was baptised on 21 May 1773 in Crawley.

  4. Ann Streeter was baptised on 6 August 1776 in Crawley.  She may have been a witnesses to the 1797 marriage of James Streeter and Ann Alfrey in Brighton, at which time she made her mark.

  5. James Streeter, my 5x Great Grandfather, was baptised on 17 April 1778 in Crawley.  He married Ann Alfrey in 1797.  (They have their own page.)

  6. John Streeter was born on 5 June 1780 and baptised on 25 June 1780 in Crawley.  The baptism register recorded his date of birth.  He died aged 59 years and was buried at St. Nicholas in Brighton on 17 August 1838.

    John may have married Mary Markwick on 25 December 1801 at St. Nicholas in Brighton.

    John and Mary may have had the following children:

    1. John Streeter was baptised on 4 February 1804 in Brighton.  (Another John Streeter was baptised in Brighton in 1805.)

    2. Edward Streeter was baptised on 21 April 1805 in Brighton.  Edward may have married Hannah Bucknell by banns on 29 August 1831 in Brighton.  He was a bachelor and she a spinster and they were both of Brighton.

    3. Caroline Streeter was baptised on 22 February 1808 in Brighton.

    4. Harriet Streeter was baptised on 10 April 1809 in Brighton.  Harriet may have married Henry Mantle by banns on 17 January 1835 in Brighton.  He was a bachelor and she a spinster and they were both of Brighton.

    5. Emma Streeter was baptised on 30 September 1810 in Brighton.  Emma may have married William Knight by banns on 10 February 1828 in Brighton.  He was a bachelor and she a spinster and they were both of Brighton.

    6. Joan Streeter was baptised on 25 December 1813 in Brighton.  The baptism register noted that her father was a glazier of Bread Street.

      As Joanna Streeter might she have married John Dudman by banns on 12 September 1831 in Brighton?  He was a bachelor and she a spinster and they were both of Brighton.

      John and Joanna had the following children:

      1. Clara Dudman was baptised on 30 December 1832 in Brighton.  The baptism register noted that her father was a carpenter from Crown Gardens.

      2. Jane Dudman was baptised on 9 November 1834 in Brighton.  The baptism register noted that her father was a carpenter from Frederick Gardens.

  7. Edward Streeter was born on 26 August 1781 and baptised on 10 November 1781 in Crawley.

  8. Jane Streeter was baptised on 18 September 1785 in Crawley.  Did she marry Alexander Huish by banns on 23 February 1808 in Brighton.  She was then a spinster and he a bachelor and they were both of Brighton.

  9. Martha Streeter was born on 22 April 1795 and baptised on 26 April 1795 in Crawley.  Did she marry John Verrall by banns on 5 May 1823 in Warbleton, Sussex?  She was then a spinster of that parish and he was a bachelor of Barcombe.
