William STONER (1744-1821)

and Sarah PARKHURST (?-1809)

William Stoner and Sarah Parkhurst married on 7 or 9 October 1768 in Slaugham, Sussex.  (They were not my direct ancestors.)

William Stoner was baptised on 24 June 1744 in Cowfold, Sussex.  He was the son of Thomas Stoner (1701-1768) and Mary (?-1788).  He died aged 77 years and was buried on 9 February 1821 in Cowfold.

Sarah Parkhurst's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  She may have been buried on 28 November 1809 in Cowfold, but the burial register only notes that the wife of William Stoner was buried and does give her forename.  Might she have been baptised on 6 January 1743 in Horsham, the daughter of James Parkhurst and Ann Robertston?  Or maybe on 4 February 1738 in Shipley, the daughter of Henry Parkhurst and Mary Standing?

William Stoner and Sarah Parkhurst had 5 known children:

  1. Ann Stoner was baptised on 7 July 1771 in Cowfold.  Might she have married William Comber by banns on 15 October 1793 in Cowfold.  They were both of Cowfold.

  2. John Stoner was baptised on 14 November 1773 in Cowfold.

Might he have married Elizabeth Evans by banns on 2 January 1803 in Henfield?  He was a bachelor and she a spinster and they were both of Henfield.

John and Bithiah had the following children:

    1. Ann Stoner was baptised on 20 October 1805 in Henfield.

    2. Stephen Stoner was born on 11 January 1809 and baptised on 29 January 1809.  He died aged 63 years and was buried on 25 July 1872 in West Grinstead.

Stephen may have married Mary Staines on 10 August 1835 at St. Nicholas, Brighton and/or Mary Richardson on 14 January 1843 in Hurstpierpoint.

As a widower, Stephen married Hephzibeh Staines on 26 March 1850 in Ashurst, Sussex.  He was then 40 years old and she was a 25 year old spinster.  Their fathers were named as John Stoner and William Staines.  The witnesses to their marriage were Samuel Stoner and Mary Ann Morley.

When the 1871 census was recorded he was the publican of the Hare and Hounds at Partridge Green in the parish of West Grinstead.  He was then said to be 58 years old and gave his place of birth as Henfield.  He was living with his 38 year old wife Hephibah, who had been born in Lewes, and 2 daughters, Anne and Kate.  Also with the family on census night were 2 lodgers, 60 year old widower William Shoobridge and unmarried 29 year old John Wortford.

Stephen and Hephzibeh had the following children:

      1. Anne Stoner was born about 1852 in Henfield.  She was 19 years old in 1871.

      2. Kate Stoner was born about 1868 in West Grinstead.  She was 3 years old in 1871.

    3. Charles Nathan Stoner was born on 23 April 1812 and baptised on 10 May 1812 in Henfield.

Charles married twice, firstly to Eliza Eamey Knight by banns on 3 December 1834 in Henfield.  She was a spinster and he a bachelor and they were both of Henfield.  The witnesses to their marriage were Thomas Coates, Edward Longhurst, Jane Lelliott, Louisa Kinsett, May Stoner and Richard Holla.

Charles then married Catherine Boniface by banns on 8 February 1837 in West Grinstead.  He was then a widower of Henfield.  The witnesses to their marriage were Henry Simmonds and Mary Boniface.

  3. Sarah Stoner was baptised on 26 November 1775 in Cowfold.

Sarah may have married John Parsons by banns on 3 August 1800 in West Grinstead.  She was then of West Grinstead and he was of Hurstpierpoint.  The witnesses to their marriage were John Steyning and William Gratwick.

  4. Hannah Stoner was baptised on 16 April 1780 in Cowfold.

Hannah may have married William Gander on 15 April 1805 in Woodmancote.  He was a bachelor and she a spinster.  The witnesses to their marriage were John Stoner and Birthah Stoner.

  5. Charles Stoner was baptised on 29 May 1785 in Cowfold.  The baptism register noted that his parents were paupers.  He married Charlotte Newman in 1811.  (They have their own page.)
