William STONER (1690-1767)

and Ann GRATWICK (c1695-1773)

William Stoner and Ann Gratwick married on 8 June 1715 in Slaugham, Sussex.  (They were not my direct ancestors.)

William Stoner was baptised on 20 February 1689/90 in Woodmancote, Sussex.  He was the son of Robert Stoner (c1660-1704) and Elizabeth Beedle (1657-1717).  William was buried on 15 December 1767 in Cowfold.

Ann Gratwick's date and place or birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  She was most probably buried on 6 October 1773 in Cowfold.  The burial register only recorded that Ann Stoner was buried.  Might she have been baptised on 31 October 1696 in Cowfold, the daughter of John Gratwicke and Mary Harland?

At the quarter sessions held on 3/4 October 1715 a JP's order to remove William Stoner and his wife Ann from Cowfold to Woodmancote, was set aside.

William Stoner and Ann Gratwick had 10 known children:

  1. Charles Stoner was baptised on 24 July 1715 in Woodmancote.  He may have been buried as a poor man in Horsham on 12 July 1786.

Charles may have married Elizabeth Pain on 17 June 1742 in Upper Beeding, Sussex.

Charles and Elizabeth had the following children:

    1. Mary Stoner was baptised on 10 November 1745 in Nuthurst.

    2. Charles Stonyer was baptised on 3 January 1747 in Nuthurst.  He may have died a bachelor and have been buried on 7 February 1783 in Horsham

    3. Edward Stonyer was baptised on 29 March 1752 in Nuthurst.

  2. John Stoner was baptised on 8 January 1716/7 in Cowfold.  He probably died as an infant.

  3. William Stoner was baptised on 31 March 1718 in Cowfold.

Might William have married Margaret Besant on 30 September 1746 in Hambledon, Hampshire?  And then settled in Clanfield, Hampshire, where he died in 1805 aged 88 years, therefore, born about 1717?

Might Margaret have been born/baptised on 10 March 1724 in East Meon, Hampshire, the daughter of John Bessant and Elizabeth Heather?

  4. Thomas Stoner was baptised on 27 January 1719/20 in Cowfold.  He married Ann White in 1751.  (They have their own page.)

  5. Mary Stoner was baptised on 8 June 1722 in Cowfold.

  6. Elizabeth Stoner was baptised on 21 March 1724/5 in Cowfold.

Elizabeth may have married Henry Luxford on 17 February 1743/4 in Cowfold.

  7. Philip Stoner was baptised on 6 March 1726/7 in Cowfold.

Might he have married Ann Apted by banns on 28 December 1755 in Withyham, Sussex?  The witnesses to the marriage were Richard Apted and Thomas Groombridge.

Or might he have been buried as a bachelor on 24 February 1799 in Horsham?

  8. John Stoner was baptised on 15 [blank] 1729 in Cowfold (between February and July).

  9. Anne Stoner was baptised on 21 April 1731 in Cowfold.

Ann may have married James Robertson by licence on 15 February 1759 in Cowfold.  He was then from Cranleigh, Surrey.  The witnesses to their marriage were James Wood and Thomas Martin.  However, she did have a cousin named Anne Stoner who was born in 1735.

  10. Harry Stoner was baptised on 12 April 1733 in Cowfold.  As Henry Stoner he may have married Elizabeth Stone in 1761.  (They have their own page.)

Might William and Ann have had a son named Robert Stoner who married Mary Baldwin in 1755?

A William Stoner died aged 84 years and was buried on 10 February 1807 in Tillington, Sussex, therefore, he was born about 1723.  He was most probably baptised on 5 August 1722 in Tillington, the son of Richard Stoner.

Sarah Stoner, wife of William, died aged 81 years and was buried on 10 June 1801 in Tillington, therefore, born about 1720.

William Stoner and Sarah Ireland married on 30 April 1746 in Tillington.

William Stoner and Sarah had the following children:

  1. Sarah Stoner was baptised on 11 November 1746 in Tillington, Sussex.

  2. Mary Stoner was baptised on 26 June 1748 in Tillington.

  3. William Stoner was baptised on 22 June 1750 in Tillington.

  4. Richard Stoner was baptised on 25 March 1752 in Tillington.  He died aged 60 years and was buried on 5 April 1812 in Tillington.

  5. Jane Stoner was baptised on 15 March 1754 in Tillington.

  6. Elizabeth Stoner was baptised on 4 January 1756 in Tillington.

  7. Thomas Stoner was baptised on 31 August 1760 in Tillington.

  8. John Stoner was baptised on 2 January 1763 in Tillington.  He died aged 60 years and was buried on 19 December 1822 in Tillington.

  9. Ann Stoner was baptised on 21 July 1765 in Tillington.

  10. James Stoner was baptised on 12 June 1768 in Tillington and buried there on 18 April 1769.
