Thomas STONER (1808-1891)

and Sarah DINAGE (1815-1885)

 

Thomas Stoner and Sarah Dinage married by banns on 5 February 1832 in Upper Beeding, Sussex.  The witnesses to their marriage were James Edwards and Mary Boniface.  (They were not my direct ancestors.)

Thomas Stoner was baptised on 24 July 1808 in Cowfold, Sussex.  He was the eldest son and child of Robert Stoner (1779-1852) and Mary Akehurst (1780-1861).  The baptism register noted that his parents were from Beeding.  Thomas died aged 80 years and his death was registered in the second quarter of 1891 in the Cuckfield registration district.

Sarah Dinnage was baptised on 4 June 1815 Nuthurst, Sussex.  She was the daughter of David Dinnage and Rebecca Turner.  She died aged 72 years and her death was registered in the fourth quarter of 1885 in the Horsham registration district.

When the 1841 census was recorded the couple and their 4 children were living at Monks Gate Common in Nuthurst.  Thomas then said to be a 30 year old agricultural labourer and Sarah's age was recorded as 25.  Also with them on census night was 30 year old Thomas Gravett and 20 year old Rebecca Gravett.  (Rebecca was most probably Sarah's sister, who was baptised on 7 October 1821 in Horsham.)

In 1851 the couple and their 5 children were living in Plummer Plain, next door to his parents.  Thomas was then a 43 year old agricultural labourer and Sarah was 39, and said she was born in Nuthurst.

At the time of the 1861 census the couple were living in Hammerpond Road, Lower Beeding.  The census recorded that Thomas was a 57 year old agricultural labourer and Sarah was 46.  Six of their children were at home on census night.

In 1871 the couple along with 2 of their children (James and Harriet) and 2 grandchildren (James and Frederick) were living at Hammer Hill in Lower Beeding.  Thomas was then a 63 year old agricultural labourer and Sarah was 59.  The next property on the census enumerators route was occupied by the family of their daughter Eliza.

The 1881 census recorded that the couple were living in Hammer Hill, Lower Beeding, along with their 4 year old granddaughter Alice Stoner.  Also living in the same property was their widowed daughter Elizabeth and her 2 children.  Thomas was then a 71 year old agricultural labourer and Sarah was 66.  They both said they were both in Nuthurst.

When the 1891 census was recorded, Thomas was an 80 year old widower and general labourer.  He was living with his daughter Elizabeth in Hammer Hill, Lower Beeding.

 

Thomas Stoner and Sarah Dinage had 9 known children:

  1. Ellen Stoner was baptised on 5 January 1834 in Nuthurst.  She was 7 years old in 1841.  In 1851 she was 17 years old and living at home.  The 1861 census recorded that she was an unmarried 26 year old and living with her parents.

  2. Eliza Stoner was born about 1836.  She was 5 years old in 1841.

    Eliza married William Boniface on 29 August 1857 at St. John's in Lower Beeding, Sussex.

    William was born about 1834 in Lower Beeding.

    (Another William Boniface married Naomi Jupp on 26 May 1852 in Lower Beeding.  He was the son of William Boniface and according to the 1861 census was born in Lower Beeding in about 1824.  And another William Boniface married Rebecca Jupp on 3 August 1844 in Nuthurst.  All 3 couples had children baptised in Lower Beeding.  Yet another William Bonniface gave his place of birth as Lower Beeding in the 1861 census.  He was 34 years old (ie born about 1827) and married to Frances.  And yet other William Bonniface married Mary Attwater on 29 March 1856 in Lower Beeding.  He was the son of Henry Bonniface.)

    When the 1861 census was recorded the couple were living at Cooks House in Lower Beeding.  William Bonniface was a 27 year old agricultural labourer and Eliza was 26.  They both gave their place of birth as Lower Beeding.  With them on census night were 3 of their children.

    William and Eliza had 13 known children:

    1. Ellen Maria Bonniface was baptised on 7 February 1858 in Lower Beeding.  The baptism register noted that her father was a labourer.  She was 3 years old in 1861.

    2. Caroline Boniface was baptised on 31 July 1859 in Lower Beeding.  The baptism register noted that her father was a labourer.  She was a year old in 1861.

    3. Mary Ann Bonniface was baptised on 14 April 1861 in Lower Beeding.  When the 1861 census was recorded she was an unnamed 2 week old female infant.

    4. Alfred Boniface was baptised on 27 December 1863 in Lower Beeding.

    5. Sarah Jane Boniface was baptised on 9 April 1865 in Lower Beeding.

    6. Frances Boniface was baptised on 23 September 1866 in Lower Beeding.

    7. Emma Boniface was baptised on 14 June 1868 in Lower Beeding.  She may have died aged 1 year and have been buried on 15 April 1870 in Lower Beeding.

    8. Jessie Boniface was baptised on 14 June 1868 in Lower Beeding.

    9. Alice Boniface was baptised on 1 December 1869 in Lower Beeding.

    10. Minnie Boniface was baptised on 21 May 1871 in Lower Beeding.  (Edwin Boniface son of William and Naomi was baptised on the same day.)

    11. Harry Boniface was baptised on 27 July 1873 in Lower Beeding.

    12. Charles Thomas Boniface was baptised on 31 January 1875 in Lower Beeding.

      Charles Thomas Boniface married Mary Feist by banns on 23 December 1899 in Lower Beeding.  He was a 25 year old bachelor and labourer from Nuthurst and she was a 24 year old spinster.  Their fathers were named as William Boniface and John Feist who were both labourers.  The witnesses to their marriage were John Feist and Margaret Feist.

    13. George Boniface was baptised on 31 December 1876 in Lower Beeding.

  3. Elizabeth Stoner was baptised on 24 December 1837 in Nuthurst.  She was 3 years old in 1841.  In 1851 she was 13 years old and living at home.  She died aged 61 years and her death was registered in the third quarter of 1899 in the Horsham registration district.

    Elizabeth married William Stone on 13 June 1857 in Nuthurst.

    William was born about 1819 in Rusper, Sussex and was the son of William Stone (1792-1853) and Ann (c1796-1868).  He died aged 61 years and was buried on 3 June 1880 in Horsham.

    At the time of the 1861 census, the couple were living with William's 65 year old widowed mother in Rusper Street, Rusper.  He was a 41 year old agricultural labourer, born in Rusper.  Elizabeth was 23 and from Nuthurst.  Also with them were their 2 young daughters.  William's mother was born in Horsham.

    When the 1871 census was recorded the couple were living at Leach Pool Cottage in Horsham.  William was then a 52 year old agricultural labourer and gave his place of birth as Rusper.  Elizabeth was 34 and said she was born in Nuthurst.  Also with them on census night were 5 of their children.

    In 1881, Elizabeth Stone was a 43 year old widow and annuitant, living with her younges 2 children in Hammer Hill, Lower, in a property she shared with her parents.

    Elizabeth and William had 7 known children:

    1. Ann Stone was baptised on 6 February 1859 in Nuthurst.  She was 2 years old in 1861.

    2. Eliza Stone was baptised on 8 July 1860 in Rusper.  When the 1861 census was recorded she was 10 months old.  She was a 10 year old scholar in 1871.

    3. William Stone was baptised on 5 October 1862 in Lower Beeding.  He was an 8 year old scholar in 1871.

    4. Betsy Stone was baptised on 10 July 1864 in Rusper.  She was a 6 year old scholar in 1871.

    5. Charlotte Stone was baptised on 6 May 1866 in Horsham.  In 1871 she was 5 years old.  She was an unmarried 25 year old general domestic servant in 1891 and living with her mother and step father.

    6. Sarah Stone was baptised on 5 July 1868 in Horsham.  At the the time of the 1871 census she was 2 years old.  She was a 12 year old scholar in 1881.

    7. Thomas Stone was baptised on 3 September 1871 in Horsham.  He was a 9 year old scholar in 1881.

    Elizabeth married for a second time to Cornelius Godsmark in the fourth quarter of 1884 in the Horsham registration district.

    Cornelius was born in the second quarter of 1848 in Cuckfield and was the son of Henry Godsmark (1807-1889) and Elizabeth Barnett (1815-1895).  He died aged 66 years and his death was registered in the second quarter of 1914 in the Horsham registration district.

    At the time of the 1891 census, Cornelius and Elizabeth were living in Hammer Hill, Lower Beeding, along with her daughter Charlotte and father.  Cornelius was a 42 year old general labourer and Elizabeth was 51.

  4. Thomas Stoner was baptised on 6 January 1840 in Nuthurst.  He was a year old in 1841.  He died aged 3 years and was buried on 5 March 1843 in Nuthurst.

  5. James Stoner was born about 1842 in Nuthurst.  He was 9 years old in 1851.  In 1861 he was an unmarried 20 year old agricultural labourer and living at home.  When the 1871 census was recorded he was a 30 year old widower and agricultural labourer and he was living with his parents and 2 sons at Hammer Hill in Lower Beeding.

    James married three times, firstly to Alice Godsmark in the second quarter of 1863 in the Horsham registration district.

    Alice was baptised on 6 January 1846 in Cuckfield, Sussex and was the daughter of Henry Godsmark (1807-1889) and Elizabeth Barnett (1815-1895).  She died aged 25 years and was buried on 7 July 1870 in Lower Beeding.

    James and Alice had 4 known children:

    1. James Henry Stoner was baptised on 20 March 1865 in Lower Beeding.  He was a 7 year old scholar in 1871.  In 1881 he was a 16 year old agricultural labourer and living with his father.

    2. Frederic George Stoner was baptised on 24 March 1867 in Lower Beeding.  He was 4 years old in 1871.  In 1881 he was a 16 year old stock boy.

    3. William Stoner was baptised on 3 January 1869 in Lower Beeding.  He died aged 3 months and was buried on 14 March 1869 in Lower Beeding.

    4. Sarah Jane Stoner was born about 1869 in Lower Beeding.  In 1881 she was a 12 year old scholar.

    5. Alice Julia Stoner was baptised on 31 July 1870 in Lower Beeding.  In 1881 she was a 10 year old scholar.  Alice Julia married James Weller Clements on 11 February 1888 in Lower Beeding.  He was a 22 year old bachelor and labourer and she was an 18 year old spinster.  Their fathers were named as James Weller Clements an engine driver and James Stoner a labourer.  The witnesses to their marriage were Moses Gatland and Mary Ann Gatland.

    James then married Mary Ann Hills on 26 October 1872 in Lower Beeding.  He was 32 and she was 28.  Their fathers were named as Thomas Stoner and James Hills.  (Another James Stoner, son of Henry Stoner married Mary Ann Harding on 26 July 1862 in Lower Beeding.  James was then aged 20 and Mary Ann 19.)

    Mary Ann may have been born about 1845.  She died aged 33 years and was buried on 23 July 1878 in Lower Beeding.

    At the time of the 1881 census James was a 39 year old widower and agricultural labourer.  He, together with his 7 children were living with his parents-in-law (James Hill and Hannah) at Hammer Hill in Lower Beeding.

    James and Mary Ann had the following children:

    1. Harry Stoner was baptised on 31 August 1873 in Lower Beeding.  He was a 7 year old scholar in 1881.  In 1891 he was a 17 year old farm labourer.

    2. Mary Ann Stoner was baptised on 31 January 1875 in Lower Beeding.  (I'm not sure if she was part of this family.)

    3. Albert Stoner was baptised on 29 October 1876 in Lower Beeding.  He was a 4 year old scholar in 1881.

    4. Jane Stoner was baptised on 21 July 1878 in Lower Beeding.  At the time of the 1881 census she was 2 years old.  In 1891 she was a 13 year old scholar.

    James next married Caroline Boniface.

    Caroline was baptised on 4 July 1858 in Lower Beeding and was the daughter of George Bonniface (1818-1887) and Phoebe Anne Louisa Bonniface (1822-?).

    In 1891 James was a 48 year old farm labourer, living with his 34 year old wife and 7 children at Hammer Hill in Lower Beeding.  He gave his place of birth as Nuthurst and Caroline as Lower Beeding.

    James and Caroline had the following children:

    1. Ada Caroline Stoner was born on 6 October 1883 and baptised on 18 November 1883 in Lower Beeding.  In 1891 she was a 7 year old scholar.

    2. Jesse Stoner was born on 18 May 1885 and baptised on 5 July 1885 in Lower Beeding.  He was a 5 year old scholar in 1891.

    3. Emma Stoner was born on 22 February 1887 and baptised on 17 April 1887 in Lower Beeding.  She was 4 years old in 1891.

    4. Carrie Stoner was born on 17 June 1888 and baptised on 19 August 1888 in Lower Beeding.  She was 2 years old in 1891.

    5. Minnie Stoner was born on 30 January 1890 and baptised on 20 April 1890 in Lower Beeding.   At the time of the 1891 census she was a year old.

  6. Walter Stoner was baptised on 25 October 1846 in Lower Beeding.  He was 5 years old in 1851.  The 1861 census recorded that he was a 14 year old agricultural labourer and living at home.

  7. Sarah Stoner was baptised on 1 July 1849 in Lower Beeding.  At the time of the 1851 census she was a year old.  She was a 12 year old scholar in 1861.

  8. Henry Stoner was baptised on 7 September 1851 in Lower Beeding.  He was a 10 year old scholar in 1861.

  9. Harriet Maria Stoner was baptised on 7 May 1854 in Lower Beeding.  In 1871 she was a 7 year old scholar.  She was 17 years old in 1871.

    Harriet married Henry Lindfield.
