Thomas STONER (1739-?)

and Phoebe AGATES (?-?)

Thomas Stoner and Phoebe Agates married on 7 February 1765 in Cuckfield, Sussex.  He was then a bachelor residing in the parish of Cuckfield and Phoebe was of Cuckfield.  (They were not my direct ancestors.)

Thomas Stoner may have been baptised on 23 September 1739 in Cowfold, Sussex, and have been the son of Thomas Stoner (1701-1768) and Mary (?-1788).

Phoebe Agates date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.

On 5 July 1766 a settlement certificate was issued to Thomas Stoner, his wife Phebe and 14 month old daughter Phebe, by the oversears of Cowfold parish to Cuckfield parish (or vice versa).

Thomas Stoner and Phoebe Agates had 7 known children:

  1. Phoebe Stoner was baptised on 30 June 1765 in Bolney.

Phoebe may have married Richard Woorham by banns on 13 December 1789 in Clayton, Sussex.  They were both then of Clayton.

  2. Ann Stoner was baptised on 31 January 1768 in Cuckfield.

Ann may have married William Hasey by banns on 30 May 1787 in Horsham.  He was then described as a weaver and they were both of Horsham.  The witnesses to the marriage were Ann Potter and Richard Collins, junior.

Or might she have married Thomas Unwins by banns on 19 January 1795 in Slaugham?  She was a spinster and he a bachelor and they were both of Slaugham.  The witnesses to the marriage were Harry Edwards and Thomas Stoner.

  3. Sarah Stoner was baptised on 17 February 1769 in Cuckfield.

    Might she have married:

Thomas Dinnage by banns on 27 September 1785 in Horsham?  He was a labourer and she a spinster.  The witnesses to the marriage were William Read and Sarah Read.

Or William Westgate by banns on 6 November 1789 in Slaugham?  The witnesses to the marriage were Thomas Stoner and John Lindfield.

Or John Purvey by licence on 3 August 1791 in Cowfold?  She was of Cowfold and he was from Fletching.  The witnesses to the marriage were Edmund Mitchell and Edward Mitchell.

A Sarah Stonyar was born in 1763 in Nuthurst.

  4. Mary Stoner was baptised on 10 April 1772 in Cuckfield.

Mary may have married Nathan Murrel by banns on 23 October 1792 in Slaugham, Sussex.  He was then from Ardingly and she of Slaugham.  The witnesses to the marriage were Thomas Stoner and John Lindfield.  However, another Mary Stoner was baptised on 17 May 1772 in Shermanbury, the daughter of Robert Stoner and Mary Stenning.

  5. Ann Stoner was baptised on 7 June 1776 in Cuckfield.

  6. John Stoneyar was baptised on 30 May 1779 in Slaugham.

  7. Steaving Stoner was baptised on 2 July 1782 in Slaugham.
