John STONER (c1798-1856)

and Sarah KING (c1798-?)

John Stoner and Sarah King married by licence on 25 January 1820 in West Grinstead.  She was then from Nuthurst.  The witnesses to their marriage were John Coates and James Stone.  Their marriage licence was issued on the same day by the Archdeaconry of Chichester, which noted that he was a 22 year old bachelor and labourer of West Grinstead (4 weeks) and she was a 22 year old spinster of Nuthurst (4 weeks).  Surety for the licence was provided by John himself and John Coates a shopkeeper of West Grinstead.  (They were not my direct ancestors.)

John Stoner may have been baptised on 27 December 1798 in Cowfold, Sussex, and have been the son of Philip Stoner (1768-1843) and Frances Martin (1765-1838).  John died aged 58 years and was buried on 8 September 1856 in Cowfold.

Sarah King may have been baptised on 29 May 1796 in Nuthurst, and have been the daughter of Joshua King and Sarah Woolgar.

When the 1841 census was recorded the couple and 5 children were living at Groveland in Cowfold.  John was then a 40 year old farm labourer and Sarah was said to be 45.

Another John Stoner (1781-1859) married Sarah Gibson (1787-1829) in 1804.  Both couples had children baptised in Cowfold and it a little difficult to sort out which children born between 1820 and 1829, belonged to which family.

John Stoner and Sarah King may have had 11 children:

  1. James Stoner was baptised on 2 July 1820 in Cowfold.  He died aged 67 years and was buried on 1 February 1888 in Cowfold.  He was 20 years old in 1841 and living with his parents.  Another James Stoner was born in 1813.  Did the elder James die young?  If so was 1820 James the son of the elder or younger John and Sarah?

  2. Ellen Stoner was baptised on 5 April 1823 in Nuthurst.  (The elder John and Sarah had a son baptised on 3 August 1823.)

  3. William Stoner was baptised on 19 September 1824 in Nuthurst.  (Given that Ellen was baptised in Nuthurst, I am assuming William was her brother.)

  4. George Stoner was baptised on 4 February 1827 in Cowfold.  (I think the elder couple had a daughter baptised on 4 November 1827.)  In 1851, there was a 24 year old George Stoner living in the home of John Trusler at Fryland Farm in Shermanbury.  George was then unmarried and a farm servant who said he was born in Cowfold.

  5. Rebecca Stoner was baptised on 18 January 1829 in Cowfold.  In 1841 she was 12 years old and living at home.  When the 1851 census was recorded she was an unmarried 22 year old visitor in the home of 36 year old Henry Richardson and his 33 year old wife Ann (nee Roberts) at Potters in Cowfold.  Rebecca was then a domestic servant.

  6. Caroline Stoner was baptised on 9 January 1831 in Cowfold.  In 1841 she was 10 years old.

Caroline married twice, firstly to Edward Hillman on 18 July 1847 in West Grinstead.  He was a 21 year old bachelor and labourer, whilst she was an 18 year old spinster.  Their fathers were named as Edward Hillman and John Stoner who were both labourers.  The witnesses to their marriage were Charles Newnham and Mary Hillman.  She then married Thomas Holland on 27 November 1859 in Southwater, Sussex.

Edward was baptised on 9 March 1828 in West Grinstead and was the son of Edward Hillman and Mary Hammond.  He died aged 30 years in Cuckfield and was buried on 11 March 1855 in West Grinstead.

When the 1851 census was recorded, Edward was a 27 year old agricultural labourer and Caroline was 20.  With on census night were their 2 children.

Edward and Caroline had the following children:

    1. Eliza Hillman was baptised on 17 December 1848 in West Grinstead.  She was 2 years old in 1851.

    2. George Hillman was baptised on 25 May 1851 in West Grinstead.  He was 2 weeks old in 1851.

    3. Marianna Hillman was baptised on 2 October 1853 in Cuckfield.

  7. Patience Stoner was baptised on 24 March 1833 in Cowfold.  She died aged 16 years in the Cuckfield Union workhouse and was buried on 27 April 1849 in Cowfold.  In 1841 she was 8 years old.

  8. John Stoner was baptised on 30 April 1834 in Cowfold.  He died aged 6 months and was buried on 5 November 1834 in Cowfold.

  9. Sophy Stoner was baptised on 28 August 1835 in Cowfold.

  10. Stephen Stoner was baptised on 25 June 1837 in Cowfold.  He died aged 9 months and was buried on 14 January 1838 in Cowfold.

  11. Emily Stoner was baptised on 21 April 1840 in Cowfold.  She died aged 9 years in the Cuckfield Union workhouse and was buried on 27 April 1849 in Cowfold.  When the 1841 census was recorded she was a year old.
