Henry STONER (1753-1828)
and Phoebe ROBERTS (1750-1825)

Henry Stoner and Phebe Roberts married on
25 August 1774 in Cowfold, Sussex. The witnesses to their marriage
were Isaac Mitchell and Ann Stoner.
(They were not my direct ancestors.) (Isaac and Ann married on 28
February 1775. Ann was most probably baptised on 7 September 1755 in
Cowfold, the daughter of Thomas Stoner and Ann
White.)
Henry Stoner was baptised on 22 April 1753 in Cowfold,
Sussex. He was the son of Thomas Stoner and
Anne White.
Henry died aged 76 years and was buried on 26
December 1828 in Cowfold. Another
Henry Stoner was
baptised on 22 September 1851 in Cowfold
the son of Thomas Stoner and Mary.
Phoebe Roberts was baptised on 2 December 1750 in Cowfold. She
was the daughter of
John Roberts
(1718-1776) and
Mary Bignal (c1720-1790). Phoebe died aged 75 years and
was buried on 24 March 1825 in Cowfold.
Henry was a witnesses to the marriage of his sister-in-law
Elizabeth Roberts and John Greenfield on 29
July 1781 in Cowfold.
Henry Stoner and Phoebe Roberts had 9 known children:

Sarah Stoner was baptised on 8 December 1774 in Cowfold.
(Another
Sarah Stoner was born in 1774 in West Grinstead and yet
another
Sarah Stoner
was born in 1777 in Shermanbury. One of them was the mother of
an illegitimate daughter born in 1801.)
Sarah may have married John Purvey by licence on 3
August 1791 in Cowfold, Sussex. John was then of
Fletching and Sarah of Cowfold. The witnesses to their marriage were
Edmund Mitchell and Edward Mitchell.
John and Sarah had the following children:

at the time her parents were of Nuthurst.

Henry may have married Mary Marryan by banns on 18 May
1800 in Cowfold. They were both then of Cowfold and he was a
bachelor and she a spinster. The witnesses to their marriage were
William Hills and John Clark.

which time her parents were described as paupers.

Edward Stoner was baptised on 28 December 1788 in Cowfold, at
which time his parents were described as paupers.
Edward married Louisa Brethren by banns on 13 May 1810 in
Cowfold. They were both then of Cowfold. The witnesses to
their marriage were Thomas Stoner and Barbary
Stoner.
Louisa was born about 1781-95 in Cuckfield. She died after 1851.
Edward and Louisa had the following children:

Edward Stoner was baptised in 1 September 1812 in
Cowfold.

James Stoner was
baptised on 3 April 1814 in Slaugham. He may have died aged 74
years and have been buried on 2 March 1887 in Cowfold.
However, another
James Stoner
was born in Cowfold in 1813.
James married Mary Mobsby by banns on 2 November
1839 in Cowfold. He was a 25 year old bachelor and labourer
and she was a 22 year old spinster. Their fathers were named
as Edward Stoner and Henry Mobsby
who were both labourers. The witnesses to their marriage were
Caroline Mobsby and Henry Hill.
When the 1881 census was recorded the couple were living at
Frenchmans in Cowfold. James was a 66 year old farm labourer
and Mary a 60 year old dressmaker. Their daughter Harriet was
home with them on census night.
Mary was born about 1821 in Cowfold.

Cowfold. In 1881 she was an unmarried 23 year old

Farley by banns on 1 August 1814 in Cowfold. She was then a
spinster of Cowfold and he of Slaugham. The witnesses to their
marriage were William Stoner and William Hills.
George was born about 1792/3 in Nuthurst. He died aged 78 years in
about May 1870 in Horsham.
George and Barbara had the following children:

married Emily Tickner on 28 January 1854 in
Slinfold.

Peter Farley was born about 1832. Peter
married Sarah Ranger on 27 November 1855 in
Slinfold.
I had thought the following Thomas was the one born in 1783, as above.
A Thomas Stoner married Martha Smith
by banns on 14 April 1811 in Slaugham. They were both of Slaugham.
The witnesses to their marriage were Edward Stoner and
Louisa Stoner.
Thomas and Martha had the
following children:

Martha Stoner was baptised on 15 September 1811 in
Slaugham.

Thomas Stoner was baptised on 31 March 1815 in
Slaugham.
On 15 April 1826 a removal order was issued to Thomas and his wife
Sophia and children 14 year Martha and 10 year old Thomas, removing them
from Beeding to Cowfold (or vice versa).
As a widower, Thomas may have married Sophia Puttick by
banns on 17 July 1825 in Cowfold. She was a spinster. The
witnesses to their marriage were John Stoner and
William Hill.
Thomas and Sophia had the following children:

Charles Stoner was baptised on 20 March 1826 in
Cowfold. The baptism register noted that Thomas was a sawyer.
He died aged 6 weeks and was buried on 25 March 1826 in Cowfold.
The burial register noted that he was the son of Thomas.

Harriet Stoner was baptised on 10 June 1827 in
Cowfold, at which time her father was a sawyer from Slaugham.

Daniel Stoner was baptised on 23 May 1830 in
Slaugham.
A Thomas Stoner died aged 80 years (as per the burial
register) and was buried on 12 January 1862 in Cowfold. However,
another
Thomas Stoner was baptised on 11 January 1784 in
Shermanbury, the son of
Robert Stoner and
Mary Stenning.
In 1851 Shermanbury Thomas was living in Cowfold with his wife Sarah.
In 1861, Shermanbury born Thomas was an 80 year old widower living in
Cowfold.
