Thomas STONEHAM (c1685-1761)

and Mary WEBB (1691-1726)

Thomas Stoneham and Mary Webb were my 7x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see their place in my pedigree chart.)  They married on 7 February 1711/2 at the parish church in Hollington, Sussex.  They were both then of Hollington, although neither seem to have been baptised in the parish.  Thomas married for a second time to the widow Dulvey on 13 April 1727 in Hollington.  She was most probably Mary Barns who had previously married John Delvey on 1 March 1709 in Hollington.  John was buried there on 18 March 1720.

Thomas Stoneham's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  Might he have been the son of William Stonheime and Mary Weeks who married in 1676 in Dallington, Sussex?  Thomas may have been buried on 29 April 1761 in Hollington.  The burial register records that he was the parish clerk.  However, this burial may have been that of his son.  Thomas may have had a younger brother, named William Stoneham who was baptised aged 24 years in 1724 in Hollington.

Mary Webb was baptised on 3 June 1691 in Bexhill, Sussex.  She was the daughter of John Webb and Elizabeth Jenner.  She was probably buried on 13 January 1725/6 in Hollington.  Another Mary Webb, probably of a similar age, married Henry Sloman on 23 April 1716 in Pett, Sussex.

Mary Barns may have been baptised on 8 September 1687 in Hollington, and have been the daughter of Michael Barns (c1660-1709) and Elizabeth Taylor (c1660-1706).  As Mary Stoneham she may have been buried on 8 December 1732 in Hollington.  Michael was the parish clerk of Hollington.  Another Mary Barns was baptised in Hollington on 5 February 1689/90, the daughter of John Barns (c1660-1717) and Ann Neeves (c1660-1706), and I think this younger Mary married James Punnett in 1712.

Thomas Stoneham and Mary Webb had 6 known children:

1. Susanna Stoneham was baptised on 26 October 1712 in Hollington.  She may have married William Brett on 2 March 1738/9 at All Saints in Hastings, Sussex.

2. William Stoneham was baptised on 18 March 1713/4 in Hollington.

   William may have married Elizabeth Jones on 3 June 1739 in Fairlight, Sussex.

   Elizabeth may have been buried in Hollington on 11 July 1781.

   William and Elizabeth had 6 known children:

   1. Elizabeth Stoneham was baptised on 17 March 1744/5 in Hollington.  She may have been the mother of an illegitimate daughter:

      1. Elizabeth Bishop Stoneham was baptised on 14 October 1764 in Hollington.  She married Richard Walter on 13 February 1786 in Hollington.

      Elizabeth may have married Thomas Sinden by licence on 14 May 1767 in Hollington.

   2. Ann Stoneham was baptised on 2 April 1749 in Hollington.

   3. William Stoneham was baptised on 7 April 1751 in Hollington.

   4. Barbara Stoneham was baptised on 14 April 1754 in Hollington.

   5. Jenny Stoneham was baptised on 6 February 1757 in Hollington.

   6. Hannah Stoneham was baptised on 27 January 1760 in Hollington.

3. Thomas Stoneham was baptised on 10 December 1715 in Hollington.

   Thomas may have married Ann Gates on 2 December 1736 in Hollington.  They were both then of Hollington.  (I'm not sure if it was father or son who married Ann.)

   Ann Stonham, widow was buried on 27 April 1782 in Hollington.

   They had 4 known children:

   1. John Stoneham was baptised on 2 October 1737 in Hollington.

      John married Ann Standen by banns on 5 April 1763 in Hollington.  They were both then of Hollington.

      Ann was buried on 23 October 1783 in Hollington.

      John may then have married Martha Catt by banns on 30 May 1787 in Hollington.  They were both then of Hollington.

      John and Ann had the following children:

      1. Susannah Stoneham was baptised on 25 February 1764 in Hollington and buried there on 16 April 1764.

      2. Ann Stoneham was baptised on 20 January 1766 in Hollington and buried on 7 February 1766.

   2. Samuel Stoneham was baptised on 3 June 1737 in Hollington.

      Samuel married Ann Catt by banns on 1 September 1765 in Hollington.  They were both then of Hollington.

      Ann may have been baptised on 7 March 1736 in Hollington and have been the daughter of Joseph Catt and Susannah Morris.

      Samuel and Ann had the following children:

      1. Samuel Stoneham was baptised on 18 January 1767 in Hollington.

      2. John Stoneham was baptised on 10 February 1771 in Hollington.

   3. Joseph Stoneham was baptised on 26 July 1741 in Hollington.

      Joseph married Jane Tophen by banns on 25 April 1765 in Hollington.  They were both then of Hollington.

      Jane was buried on 30 May 1797 in Hollington and the burial register records that her husband was the parish clerk.

      As a widower, Joseph married Sarah Shoulder, widow, by banns on 28 June 1798 in Hollington.  He was then of Hollington and she of the parish of St. Clement's, Hastings.

      Sarah was buried on 26 November 1807 in Hollington.

      Joseph may then have married for a third time to Catherine Stemp by banns on 5 May 1808 in Hollington.  They were both then of Hollington.

   4. Mary Stoneham was baptised on 13 September 1742 in Ore.

4. Henry Stoneham, my 6x Great Grandfather, was baptised on 11 January 1717/8 in Hollington.  He married Sarah Punnet in 1751.  (They have their own page.)

5. Mary Stoneham was baptised 11 June 1723 in Hollington.  She may have been buried on 19 July 1724 in Hollington.

6. James Stoneham was baptised on 18 April 1725 in Hollington and buried there on 1 March 1727/8.

Thomas Stoneham and Mary Barns had 1 known daughter:

1. Elizabeth Stoneham was baptised on 5 May 1728 in Hollington.  The baptism register records her mother's name as Mary.

   Margery wife of John Stonam was buried on 16 October 1609 in Brede.

2. Samuel Stonham and Ann Henley married on 28 June 1618 in Ashburnham, Sussex.

3. John Stoneham and Joan Barnes married on 6 June 1619 in Mountfield, Sussex.

4. Thomas Stoneham and Winifred Halsey married on 5 February 1620/1 in Dallington, Sussex.  He was a husbandman of Arlington, Sussex and she a widow of Dallington.  A Thomas Stoneham was buried on 31 May 1651 in Arlington.

5. John Stonam and Dorothy Dollington married on 27 May 1622 in Battle, Sussex.

6. Richard Stoneham and Alice Walter married on 5 November 1627 in Salehurst, Sussex.

7. John Stonum and Mary Kypping or Keeping married on 12 February 1628/9 in Whatlington, Sussex.  He was then a husbandman and she a spinster and they were both of Sedlescombe, Sussex.

8. Anthony Stoneham and Joan Newman married on 6 April 1629 in Beckley, Sussex.

9. Stephen Stoneham and Ann Illbert married on 9 April 1632 in Peasmarsh, Sussex.  She was then a widow.

10. Stephen Stoneham and Jane Stempe married on 17 May 1638 in Iden, Sussex.

11. Nicholas Stonham and Katherine Levitt married on 12 June 1642 in Wartling, Sussex.

12. Thomas Stonham and Ann What married on 10 April 1643 in Mountfield, Sussex.

13. Joseph Stonham and Ann married on 15 April 1651 in Brightling, Sussex.

14. Thomas Stoneham and Elizabeth Huxstepp married on 8 October 1655 in Ewhurst, Sussex.  They were both then of Ewhurst.

15. Roger Stonham and Elizabeth Pettenden married on 30 October 1655 in Hawkhurst, Kent or on 30 September 1655 in Mountfield, Sussex.  He was then a husbandman of Sandhurst and she a spinster of Mountfield.

16. John Stoneham and Elizabeth Langley married on 28 February 1659/60 in Whatlington, Sussex.  They were both then of Brede, Sussex.  They may have had the following children:

17. Sarah Stoanham was baptised on 31 December 1660 in Brede.  Only her father's name was recorded in the baptism register.

18. Elizabeth Stoanham was baptised on 29 September 1661 in Brede.  The baptism register recorded that her father as John Stoanham, the younger.

19. Richard Stoanham was baptised on 13 December 1663 in Brede.  The baptism register recorded that his father was John Stoanham, junr.

20. John Stoneham and Ann Doust married on 13 November 1660 in Battle, Sussex.  He was then of Brede, Sussex and she of Salehurst, Sussex.

21. Roger Stoneham and Elizabeth French married on 21 April 1668 in Beckley, Sussex.

22. Henry Stonham and Elizabeth Lavender married on 12 May 1668 in Westfield, Sussex.

23. Richard Stonham and Joan Williams married on 23 July 1668 in Westfield.  He was then of Sandhurst, Kent and she was a widow.

24. William Stoanham and Elizabeth Axe married on 6 April 1675 in Brede, Sussex, Sussex.  He was then of Whatlington and she of Brede.  Elizabeth may have been buried in Whatlington on 4 March 1676.

25. William Stonheime and Mary Weeks married on 29 March 1676 in Dallington.  He was then a widower of Whatlington.  William may have been buried on 17 October 1680 in Whatlington.

26. Richard Stonham and Elizabeth Buss married on 29 December 1690 in Beckley, Sussex.

1. Susanna Webb was buried in Hollington on 24 November 1709.

2. William Webb of Hastings married Mary Sanders of Westfield on 2 January 1718 in Hollington.

3. Nicholas Webb and his wife Elizabeth had the following children baptised in Hollington:  1720 John, 1722 Elizabeth, 1727 William.

4. Robert Webb married Mary Edwards on 15 October 1723 in Hollington.
