William Stillaway and Ellen Foice married on 24 September 1870 in Ashurst,
Sussex. He was a 22 year old bachelor and she a 21 year old
spinster. Their fathers were named as James Stillaway
and Henry Foice. The witnesses to their marriage
were T.S. Hawkins and
Caroline Stillaway. (They were not my direct
William Stillaway was born on 5 August 1848 and baptised on 8
October 1848 in Henfield, Sussex. He was the son of
(1817-1885) and Hetty
Elliott (1820-1899). William may
have died aged 77 years and his death registered in the fourth quarter
of 1925 in the Steyning registration district. He was 2 years old
Ellen Elliott was baptised on 16 December 1849 in West Grinstead, Sussex.
the daughter of Henry Foice (1812-?) and Eliza Banfield
father was a labourer. Her death may have been registered as 86 year
old Ellen Stillaway in the second quarter of 1937 in
the Horsham registration district. When the 1851 census was
recorded she was a year old and living with her parents in West
When the 1871 census was recorded the couple were living on Horsebridge
Common in Ashurst, Sussex. William was a 22 year old agricultural
labourer and Ellen was 21. His place of birth was given as Henfield,
whilst she was born in West Grinstead. Also lodging with them in 1871 was 58 year old widower,
Henry Foice who was an agricultural labourer from West Grinstead.
In 1881 the couple and 3 children (Caroline, James and William) were
living at 56 Hillhouse, Shipley, Sussex. William was a 32 year old
agricultural labourer and Ellen was 31.
At the time of the 1891 census the couple and 4 sons (James, William, John
and Charles) were living at Bottings in Henfield. William was a 42
year old agricultural labourer and Ellen was 41. Also with them
was his widowed mother Hetty Stillaway who was 71 and
gave her place of birth as Ashurst.
The couple and son Charlie were still living at Bottings in 1901.
William was a 52 year old farm bailiff and Ellen was 51. Also with
them was 22 year old boarder William T. Ayling
who was a carter on a farm from Yapton, Sussex.
William Stillaway and Ellen Foice had 6 known children:
Caroline Stillaway was born about 1872 in Ashurst. She was
a 9 year old scholar in 1881. Caroline died aged 16 years and her
death was registered in the first quarter of 1888 in the Steyning
James Stillaway was born about 1874 in Ashurst. He died
aged 78 years and his death was registered in the second quarter of 1952
in the Brighton registration district. He was a 7 year old scholar
in 1881. In 1891 he was a 17 year old agricultural labourer.
Mary Catherine Laker in the third quarter of 1895
Mary Catherine was baptised on 3 August 1873 in Steyning and was the
daughter of George Laker and Caroline.
In 1901 the couple and 2 sons were living in 34 Lincoln Street, Brighton
and James was a 27 year old town carter. Also with them on census
night were 2 boarders, 19 year old John Stillway and 28 year old
James and Mary had the following known sons by 1901:
Percy James Stillaway was born in the third quarter of 1898 in
Brighton. He died aged 19 years and his death was registered in
the second quarter of 1918 in the Steyning registration district.
Charlie Stillaway was born in the first quarter of 1900 in
Brighton. He died aged 65 years and his death was registered in
the fourth quarter of 1965 in the Brighton registration district.
Edward Stillaway was baptised on 25 July 1876 in Nuthurst.
The baptism register noted that his father was a labourer. He was
buried as an infant on 29 July 1876 in Nuthurst.
William Stillaway was baptised on 6 January 1878 in Nuthurst.
The baptism register noted that his father was a labourer. At the
time of the 1881 he was 3 years old. In 1891 he was a 13 year old
agricultural labourer. He died aged 20 years and was buried on 22
December 1897 in Henfield. The burial register noted that he was
from Bottings in Henfield.
John Stillaway was born in the third quarter of 1882/3 in Shipley
or West Grinstead. In 1891 he was an 8 year old scholar. He was a 19 year old town carter in 1901 and boarding
with his elder brother.
Charles Stillaway was born in the second quarter of 1885 in
Shipley. He was 5 years old in 1891. In 1901 he was a 15
year old stockman on a farm.
