William STILLAWAY (c1830-1902)

and Elizabeth GREEN (1830-1895)

William Stillaway and Elizabeth Green married on 12 October 1851 in Seale, Surrey.  At the time William was a labourer.  (They were not my direct ancestors.)

William Stilwell was baptised on 4 July 1830 in Ash, Surrey.  He was the son of James Stilwell (c1800-?) and Sarah.  When the 1841 census was recorded William Stillwell was said to be 9 years old and he was living with his father and siblings in Ash.  In 1851 William Stilaway was a farm servant living at Tongham Street in Seale, Surrey.  By 1881 he was a bench sawyer.  William died aged 73 years and his death was registered in the second quarter 1902 in the Farnham registration district.

Elizabeth Green was baptised on 5 September 1830 in Seale, Surrey.  She was the daughter of Thomas Green (c1791-?) and Elizabeth Paine.  Elizabeth died aged 65 years and her death was registered in the first quarter 1895 in the Farnham registration district.  At the time of the 1851 census she was 20 years old and living with her 60 year old widower father in Farnham Road, Seale.  Also with her was her 6 month old son, James, who was described as the son of Thomas rather than grandson.

When the 1861 census was recorded the couple and their 3 children were living in Badshot Lee in Farnham, Surrey.  William was then a 30 year old builder's labourer/bricklayer.

William Stillaway and Elizabeth Green had 3 known children:

  1. James Alan Green was baptised on 27 October 1850 in Seale, Surrey.  As Alan Stillaway he married Matilda Harding in 1872.  (They have their own page.)  His mother had elder brothers named James and Alan.

  2. Ellen Jane Stillaway was born on 20 October 1852 in Badshot Lea, Surrey.  She was an 8 year old scholar in 1861.

Ellen Jane married Harry Videan in the third quarter 1877 in the Farnham registration district.  Harry was born 1852 in Hartley Row, Hampshire and his birth was registered in the second quarter in the Hartley Wintney registration district.  They had 10 known children, 9 of whom were:

    1. Ellen J. Videan was born about 1879 in Badshot Lea.  In 1901 she was a Drapers Assistant.

    2. Annie Videan was born about 1880 in Aldershot, Hampshire.  In 1901 she was a Bookkeeper.

    3. Harry Charles Videan was born about 1883 in Aldershot and his birth was registered in the first quarter in the Farnham registration district.  In 1901 he was a Milk Assistant.

    4. Fred Videan was born about 1886 in Aldershot.  In 1901 he was an Under Gardener.

    5. Ernest Videan was born about 1889 in Aldershot.  In 1901 he was a Paper Boy.

    6. Beatrice Elizabeth Videan was born 1890 in Aldershot and her birth was registered in the fourth quarter in the Farnham registration district.

    7. Harriet May Videan was born about 1894 in Aldershot and her birth was registered in the first quarter in the Farnham registration district.

    8. Irene Mary Videan was born about 1897 in Aldershot and her birth was registered in the first quarter in the Farnham registration district.

    9. Florence Kathleen Videan was born 1899 in Aldershot and her birth was registered in the second quarter in the Farnham registration district.

In 1881 the family were living in Aldershot, Hampshire.  Harry was then a Bakers Assistant and his household comprised of wife Ellen J (28), daughters Ellen J (2) and Annie (1), and a Lodger Margaret Whelan (40).

The family were still in Aldershot in 1901 and Harry was then a 48 year old Painter.  His household then comprised of Ellen (48), Ellen (22), Annie (21), Harry (18), Fred (15), Ernest (12), Beatrice (10), May (7), Irene (4) and Florence (2).

  3. William Stillaway was born about 1855 in Farnham, Surrey.  He was a 6 year old scholar in 1861.  In 1881 he was an unmarried Plasterer living with his parents.  He may have died aged 32 years and have been buried on 4 June 1885 in Grays Thurrock, Essex.

Notes

When the 1881 census was recorded the family were living in Badshot Lea, Farnham, Surrey.  William was then a 50 year old Bench Sawyer.  His household comprised of wife Elizabeth (50), son William Stillaway (26) and grandson Thomas Stillaway (7).

I have not found William in the 1901 census.

In March 2003 I was contacted by a descendant (Pat) of Ellen Jane Stillaway, who told me that Alan Stillaway was the brother of Ellen Jane.  (Thank you Pat for all the details on this Stillaway branch.)
