Richard STILLAWAY
(1837-1915)
and Jane BATCHELOR (1840-1902)

Richard Stillaway and Jane Batchelor married in 1864.
(They were not my direct ancestors. Richard was the nephew William
Stillaway (1774-1818) who was most probably my 4x great grandfather.)
Richard Stillaway was baptised on 13 August 1837 in Henfield, Sussex.
He was the son of
George Stillaway
(1789-1871) and Sarah
Barnett (1791-1839). He died aged 81 years and his death was
registered in the fourth quarter of 1915 in the Steyning registration
district.
When the 1841 census was recorded he was living at home with his widower
father and elder siblings. At the time of the 1851 census Richard was
a 14 year old agricultural labourer and he and his father were lodging in
the home of
Philip
Allfrey at Wood House in Henfield. In 1861 he was an unmarried 23 year old
agricultural labourer living at home with his father at Knep Town (Neptown) in
Henfield.
Jane Batchelor was baptised on 15 March 1840 in Twineham, Sussex.
She was the daughter of Benjamin Batchelor (1813-?) and Mary Nye
(1818-1878). Jane
died aged 64 years in 1902.
When the 1871 census was recorded the couple and 4 children were living in
Nep Town, Henfield. Richard was a 32 year old licensed hawker and Jane
was 30. He gave his place of birth as Henfield and she a Twineham.
When the 1881 census was recorded the family were living in Neptown,
Henfield and Richard was a Pedlar and Hawker. The children at home
were Mary Jane (13), Albert (11), Nelly, (9), Arthur (7), William (4),
Minnie (2) and Eliza (9 months).
In 1891, Richard and Jane together with 6 children and 7 year old grandson,
Dick Stillaway, were living at 3 Southview Terrace in
Henfield. Richard was then a general labourer.
The 1901 census
records that the couple were still at 3 Southview Terrace along with
daughter Kate and 17 year old grandson Richard
Stillaway, who was a carpenter's apprentice and had been born in
Shoreham.
In 1911, Richard was a 77 year old widower and living with with widowed
daughter Ellen at 140 Ellen Street, Hove
Richard Stillaway and Jane Batchelor had 12 known children:

Jesse Stillaway was born about 1862 in Twineham. In 1871 he
was a 9 year old scholar.

Annie Stillaway was born about 1866 in Henfield. She was a 5
year old scholar in 1871.
Annie married Edward Hammond in the first quarter of 1890
in the Westhampnett registration district.
When the 1891 census was recorded the couple and young daughter were
living at 9 Market Street, South Bersted, Sussex. Edward was a 28
year old coachman and Annie was 25. He gave his place of birth as
Bognor and she as Henfield.
Edward and Annie had the following child:

Annie L. Hammond was born in 1890 in
Bognor, Sussex. She was 11 months old when the 1891 census was
recorded.

Mary Jane Stillaway was born about 1868 in Henfield. She was
a 3 year old scholar in 1871. In 1881
she was an 13 year old servant and the eldest of her siblings living at
home.

Albert Stillaway was born in 1869 in Henfield. He died in
1930. He was a year old when the 1871 census was recorded. In 1881 he was an
11 year old errand boy.
Albert
married Edith Annie Lambourn in 1893.
Edith Annie was born about 1872 in Oxfordshire. She died aged 73
years and her death was registered in the first quarter of 1944 in the
South Western Surrey registration district.
When the 1901 census was recorded the couple and their 6 children were
living at 14 Church Road in Godalming, Surrey and Albert was earning his
living as a baker.
Albert and Edith had the following children:

Edith Annie Stillaway was born in the third quarter of 1893 in
Battle, Sussex. She was 7 years old in 1901.

Albert Gordon Stillaway was born in the first quarter of 1895 in
Battle. He was 6 years old in 1901. He died aged 74 years
and his death was registered in the first quarter of 1969 in the South
Western Surrey registration district.

Marion Minnie Stillaway was born in the first quarter of 1897 in Farncombe,
Surrey. In 1901 she was 4 years old.

Ralph William Stillaway was born in the fourth quarter of 1898 in Farncombe.
He was 2 years old in 1901. He died aged 64 years and his death
was registered in the second quarter of 1963 in the Aldershot
registration district.
Ralph married Elsie M.
Alford in 1925 in the Guildford registration district.
Ralph and Elsie had the following child:

Jeanne M. Stillaway was born in
the third quarter of 1929 in the Farnham, Surrey registration
district.
Jeanne married Harry F. Downton in
the third quarter of 1950 in the Aldershot, Hampshire registration
district.

Cicely Stillaway was born in the fourth quarter of 1899 in Farncombe and
died in 1972. In 1901 she was 2 years old.
Cicely married James Penny in the fourth quarter of 1921 in the
Guildford registration district. He was
known as Bill.
The
couple had 2 children:

Iris Rita Penny (1925-1956).

Graham Penny (1934-1993). He may have lived in
Pulborough, Sussex.

Arthur Stillaway was born in the first quarter of 1901 in Farncombe.
At the time of the 1901 census he was 4 months old.

Dulcie Mary Stillaway was born in the first quarter of 1902 in Farncombe.
Dulcie
married Albert Richardson in the third quarter of 1929
in the Guildford registration district.

Alec Harry Stillaway was born on 2 July 1903 in Farncombe.
He died aged 81 years and his death was registered in January 1985 in
the South Western Surrey registration district.
Alec married Ada E. Andrews in the
first quarter of 1930 in the Guildford registration district.
Ada Emily was born on 17 April 1900. She died aged 78 years and
her death was registered in the first quarter of 1979 in the South
Western Surrey registration district.
Alec and Ada had the following child:

Tony A. Stillaway was born in the
fourth quarter of 1932 in the Uckfield registration district.
Tony married Veronica M. Byford in
the third quarter of 1955 in the South Western Surrey registration
district.

Leonard Stillaway was born in the fourth quarter of 1904 in Farncombe. He
probably died young.

Alice Vera Stillaway was born on 14 September1906. She died
aged 70 years and her death was registered in the third quarter of 1976
in the South Western Surrey registration district.
As Vera A. Stillaway she married
John A. Broatch in the third quarter
of 1931 in the Guildford registration district.
John Andrew Broatch was born on 15 December 1904.
He died aged 75 years and his death was registered in the first quarter
of 1980 in the South Western Surrey registration district.
John and Vera had the following child:

Spencer Stillaway was born in the second quarter of 1909 in Godalming, Surrey. He
died in 1964.
Spencer married Edna Ada Fowle in
the second quarter of 1936 in the Uckfield registration district.
Edna was born on 8 January 1911 and died in the first quarter of 1979.
Her death was registered in the South East Surrey registration district.
Spencer and Edna had the following child:

1911.
Margaret married Reginald C. Colfus in
the third quarter of 1936 in the South Western Surrey registration
district.

Denis Stillaway was born on 1 August 1913. He died aged 56
years and his death was registered in the second quarter of 1970 in the
Bournemouth registration district.
Denis married Betty K. Dale in the
second quarter of 1947 in the North Eastern Surrey registration
district.
Betty Kathleen was born on 18 June 1920. She died aged 59 years
and her death was registered in the first quarter of 1980 in the Poole
registration district.

James Stillaway was born in the second quarter of 1915.

Frances Ellen Stillaway was born in the third quarter of 1871 in Henfield. In the 1881 census her name was recorded as Nelly
Stillaway, when she was a 9 year old scholar. The 1891 census
recorded that she was 19 year old Ellen Stillaway and
she was then a general domestic servant, and she was the eldest of her
siblings living at home.
She married ? Waller.
In 1911 Ellen was a 37 year old widow and the head of her household at 140
Ellen Street, Hove. She was then a laundry worker. The
census also recorded that she had had 2 children, both of whom were
living with her, along with her father and younger sister.
Ellen had 2 sons:

Frank Waller was born about 1893 in Brighton. In
1911 he was an 18 year old stoker at the cement works.

Arthur Waller was born about 1902 in Portslade.
He was 9 years old in 1911.

Arthur Stillaway was born in the fourth quarter of 1873 in Henfield.
He was 7 years old in 1881.
In 1891 he was a 17 year old general labourer and living at home.
When the 1901 census was recorded he was a 27 year old gardener, not
domestic, lodging in Eastwood Road, Bramley, Surrey in the home of
Thomas Goodsall. His death may have been registered as 82 year
old Arthur Stillaway in the first quarter of 1958 in
the Brighton registration district.

William Stillaway was born about 1877 in Henfield. An 18 year
old Ernest William Stillaway of 3 South View Terrance,
Henfield, was buried on 16 May 1894 in Henfield. He was 4 years old in 1881. In 1891 he was a 14 year old
bricklayer's labourer.

Minnie May Stillaway was born in the third quarter of 1878 and baptised
on 21 April 1893 in Henfield. She was buried in Henfield on 27 April
1893 aged 14 years. In 1881 she was 2 years old. She was not living with her parents when the
1891 census was recorded.

Eliza Stillaway was born in third quarter of 1880 in Henfield.
When the 1881 census was recorded she was 9 months old. She died
aged 13 years and was buried on 10 January 1894 in Henfield. The
burial register noted she was from 3 South View Terrace, Henfield. She was not living with her
parents at the time of the 1891 census.

Lily Stillaway was born 1881 in Henfield, after the recording of
the census in that year. In 1891 she was a 10 year old scholar.

Agnes Kate Stillaway was born in the second quarter of 1883 in Henfield.
The 1891 census records that she was 8 year old Kate Stillaway
and she was a scholar.
In 1901 she was an 18 year old domestic servant living with her
parents. The 1911 census recorded her name as Kathleen
Stillaway and she was an unmarried 24 year old domestic
servant, living with her sister Ellen at 140 Ellen Street, Hove.
She died aged 62 years and her death was registered in the third quarter
of 1942 in the Hove registration district.

Daisy Stillaway was born in the fourth quarter of 1885 and baptised on
23 June 1893 in Henfield. She was buried in Henfield on 7 July 1893
aged 7 years. The burial register noted she was from 3 South View
Terrace, Henfield. At the the time of the 1891 census she was a 5 year
old scholar.

Dick Stillaway married Alice Cherrieman in
the first quarter of 1911 in the Steyning registration district.
Dick died aged 78 years and his death was registered in the first quarter of
1962 in the Worthing registration district.
Alice was born about 1891. She died aged 75 years and her death was
registered in the fourth quarter of 1966 in the Worthing registration
district, as Alice K. Stillaway.
Dick and Alice had the following known (to me) children:

Millicent D. Stillaway was born in the
second quarter of 1917 in the Steyning registration district. She
married Robin H. Nicholls in the
fourth quarter of 1939 in the Chantonbury, Sussex registration district.

Frederick E. Stillaway was born in the
third quarter of 1919 in the Steyning registration district. He
married Rillis L. Norris in the first
quarter of 1942 in the Warwick registration district.
