James STILLAWAY (1817-1885)

and Hetty ELLIOTT (1820-1899)

James Stillaway and Hetty Elliott married by banns on 18 December 1843 in Henfield, Sussex.  He was a bachelor and labourer and she was a spinster.  Their fathers were named as James Stillaway and George Elliott, who were both labourers.  The witnesses to the marriage were William Emsley and Sarah Elliott.  (Marriage details have come from a transcript of the Henfield registers.  I am not sure if her father was George or Charles.)  (They were not my direct ancestors.  James was most probably the nephew of my 4x great grandfather, William Stillaway.)

James Stillaway was baptised on 2 November 1817 in Pyecombe, Sussex.  He was the son of James Stillaway (1792-1877) and Frances Chatfield.  James died aged 68 years and was buried on 9 August 1885 in Henfield.

Hetty Elliott was baptised on 7 January 1821 in Ashurst, Sussex, the daughter of Charles Elliott and Sarah Matthews.  (Baptism date and the names of her parents have come from a transcript of the Ashurst baptism register.)  She died aged 78 years and was buried on 6 February 1899 in Henfield.  The burial register noted that she was from Bottings in Henfield.  When the 1841 census was recorded, Hetty was said to be 25 years old and living at Parish Cottage in Ashurst with 62 year old John Elliott, a huckster and 65 year old Elizabeth Elliott.

When the 1851 census was recorded the couple and their 4 children (Fanny, Caroline, William and Harriet) were living with James's widower father at Godstone in Henfield.  James was then a 33 year old agricultural labourer and Hetty was 30.  He gave his place of birth as Henfield and she as Ashurst.

The couple and 5 children were still at Godstone in 1861, along with his 70 year old widower father and 29 year old brother, Edward.  By 1871 the family had moved to Kidders in Henfield.  James was then a 54 year old agricultural labourer.  In 1881 James and Hetty together with 2 sons were still at Kidders.  In 1891, Hetty was a 71 year old widow and living with the family of her son William at Bottings in Henfield.

James Stillaway and Hetty Elliott had 9 known children:

  1. Frances Stillaway was born in April 1844 and baptised as Fanny Stillaway on 14 July 1844 in Henfield.  She was a 6 year old scholar in 1851.

William was baptised on 10 September 1843 in Twineham, Sussex and was the son of Lazarus Sayers (1803-?) and Amelia Osbond (c1805-?).

When the 1871 census was recorded the couple and 3 children (William, Ernest and Fanny) were living at 4 St. James Gardens in Brighton.  William was then a 27 year old plasterer's labourer and Fanny was 26.

William and Fanny had the following children:

    1. William Sayers was born about 1866 in Twineham.  In 1871 he was a 5 year old scholar.

As Annie Stillaway she married Thomas Goss in the third quarter of 1895 in the Brighton registration district.

Thomas was born about 1843 in Exeter, Devon.

When the 1901 census was recorded the couple were living at 7 Cambridge Terrace in Brighton.  Thomas was then a 58 year old house painter and Annie was 43 years old.

  8. James Stillaway was baptised on 14 October 1860 in Henfield.  When the 1861 census was recorded he was 7 months old.  In 1871 he was a 10 year old carter boy and in 1881 a 20 year old agricultural labourer.

James married Kate Caroline Slaughter by banns on 5 April 1890 in Henfield.  He was a 28 year old bachelor and labourer and she an 18 year old spinster.  Their fathers were named as James Stillaway and William Slaughter who were both labourers.  The witnesses to their marriage were William Slaughter and Matilda Dowlen.

Kate Caroline was baptised on 14 April 1872 in Upper Beeding and was the daughter of William Slaughter (c1846-?) and Mary Ann Comber (c1846-?).  The baptism register noted her father was a labourer.  Her birth was registered in the first quarter of 1872 in the Steyning registration district.  In 1881 she was a 9 year old scholar and living with her parents at Clayland Cottage in Ashurst.

In 1901 the family were living in Partridge Green and James was a 40 year old general labourer.  Kate was then 29 years old.
