Alan STILLAWAY (1850-1922)

and Hannah Matilda HARDING (c1852-1921)

Alan Stillaway and Matilda Harding married in the fourth quarter of 1872 in the Farnham registration district.  (They were not my direct ancestors.)

Alan Stillaway was baptised as James Alan Green on 27 October 1850 in Seale, Surrey.  Only his mother's name was recorded in the baptism register.  He was the son of and Elizabeth Green (1830-1895) and possibly William Stillaway (c1830-1902).  Alan was a Stevedore.  In 1851 he was 6 month old James Green and he was living in the home of his grandfather Thomas Green in Farnham Road, Seale.  When the 1861 census was recorded he was a 10 year old scholar living with his parents in Badshot Lee, Farnham.  The death of 71 year old Alan Stillaway was registered in the third quarter of 1922 in the Orsett, Essex registration district.

Hannah Matilda Harding was born about 1852/3 in Woking, Surrey.  She died aged 69 years and her death was registered as Matilda Stillaway in the fourth quarter of 1921 in the Orsett registration district.

In 1881 the family were living at 17 Victoria Street in West Ham, Essex and Alan was a 30 year old labourer.  When the 1891 census was recorded the couple and their 7 children were living at 16 Church Street, Greys and Allen was a general labourer.  They were still at 16 Church Street when the 1901 census was recorded and this time there were 6 children in the household.  Alan was a dock labourer in 1901.

At the time of their son William's death in 1915 Alan and Matilda were living at Custom House in London.  When their sons Alfred and Arthur died in 1917 they were living at 17 Manor Road, Grays.

Alan Stillaway and Hannah Matilda Harding had 12 known children:
