In 1881 the family were living at 17 Victoria Street in West Ham, Essex and
Alan was a 30 year old labourer. When the 1891 census was recorded the
couple and their 7 children were living at 16 Church Street, Greys and Allen
was a general labourer. They were still at 16 Church Street when the
1901 census was recorded and this time there were 6 children in the
household. Alan was a dock labourer in 1901.
At the time of their son William's death in 1915 Alan and Matilda were
living at Custom House in London. When their sons Alfred and Arthur
died in 1917 they were living at 17 Manor Road, Grays.

Thomas Stillaway was born on 31 August 1873 in Sunbury, Middlesex.
At the time his father was a labourer at the Waterworks. His mother
(Hannah Matilda Stillaway formerly Harding) registered his birth on 23
September 1873 and she then made her X mark. He was not with his
parents on census night in 1881.
Thomas married in the first
quarter of 1897 in the Orsett registration district, possibly to
Elizabeth Ann Woodrow.

Elizabeth Jane Stillaway was born in the Stoke Newington area of
London in 1875 and her birth was registered in the second quarter in the
Kingston registration district. (The 1881 census records that she
was born in Molesey, Surrey.) Elizabeth died in about 1918 in a
house fire at 67 Lett Road, Stratford, East London, whilst
trying to save her daughter who also perished. She was 6 years old
when the 1881 census was recorded.
Elizabeth Jane married Robert Samuel Mills
in the third quarter of 1897 in the Hackney registration district.
They had 4 sons and at least 1 daughter.

James Stillaway was born about 1877 at the Custom House in Canning
Town, Essex. In 1881 he was 4 years old. He was 14 years old
in 1891 and the eldest of his siblings living at home on census night. As James Alan Stillaway he may have married in
the fourth quarter 1902 in the West Ham registration district.

William Stillaway was born in the fourth quarter of 1878 at the
Custom House in Canning
Town. He was 3 years old in 1881. In 1891 he was a 14 year old
scholar. He died aged 37 years on 3 February 1915. At the time he
was a storekeeper on board HMS Clan McNaughton and his home address was 17
Charles Street in Grays.
William may have married Alice Bertha Mason in the fourth quarter of
1902 in the Orsett registration district.

Emily Stillaway was born about 1880 at the Custom House in Canning
Town. When the 1881 census was recorded she was a year old.
She was an 11 year old scholar in 1891. She died aged 14 years and her death was registered in the
third quarter 1894 in the Orsett registration district.

Matilda Stillaway was born about 1882 at the Custom House in
Canning Town. In 1891 she was a 9 year old scholar. Her death at the age of
19 was registered in the second quarter of 1902 in the Orsett registration
district.

Henry Stillaway was born in the second quarter of 1885 in Grays,
Essex. He was a 6 year old scholar in 1891. In 1901 he was a dock
labourer and the eldest of his siblings living at home.

Alan Stillaway was born on 21 September 1888 in Grays.
When the 1891 census was recorded he was 3 years old. He was 12
years old in 1901. Alan served as a crewman on board the Cunard ship
Albania. He was a greaser. He visited the USA on four
occasions during 1923-1924 and his name was variously spelt on the ships
manifest as Alan, Allan, Allen, and Stilloway. The death of 76 year
old Alan Stillaway was registered in the fourth quarter
of 1964 in the Thurrock, Essex registration district.
Alan
married Eva Lillian Thomson who was born on 22 October 1902 at
Crows Nest, Queensland, Australia.

Ada Jane Stillaway was born in the first quarter of 1891 in Grays.
She was 3 months old when the 1891 census was recorded. In 1901 she
was 10 years old.

Albert George Stillaway was born in the fourth quarter of 1892 in Grays.
In 1901 he was 8 years old. He died on 2 April 1926 when the S.S. Dorrigo went down off Double Island. He was a sailor and fireman.
Albert emigrated to Australia and married Rosina Brittain.
The couple had 5 children, one of whom was:

William Albert Stillaway was born on 11 August 1916 in Brisbane,
Queensland, Australia. He died on 18 April 1964 in Brisbane.
He was a Mechanic.
William married Phyllis Foden on 20 June
1942 in Blair Athol, Queensland.
Phyllis was born on 14 December 1923
and died on 4 June 2002.

In 1901 he was 5 years old. He died aged 22 years on 7 September 1917. He was then a fireman on
board the steam ship "Minnehala" (Belfast).

then a trimmer on board the steam ship "Minnehaha" (Belfast).
