John STEEL (1777-?)
and Mary GOODWIN (c1780-?)

John Steel
and Mary
Goodwin married on 2 November 1796 in Hurstpierpoint, Sussex.
(They were not my direct ancestors. John was the nephew of my 6x great
grandmother, Elizabeth Steel.)
John Steel
was baptised in August 1777 in
Hurstpierpoint. He was the son of
John Steel
(1747-?) and Fanny
Pannett (1754-?).
Mary Goodwin's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.
When the 1841 census was recorded the couple were living at East Edgerly in
Hurstpierpoint and John was an agricultural labourer. Also with them
on census night was 35 year old Richard Steel and 10 year old John
Steel.
John Steel and Mary
Goodwin had 10 known children:
-
Frances Steele was baptised on 5 May 1798 in Hurstpierpoint.
-
Ann Steel was born on 23 December 1799 and baptised on 15 January
1800 in Hurstpierpoint. In 1851 she was the head of her household
and living at Great Edgeley Cottage in Hurstpierpoint. She was then
said to be an unmarried 50 year old cripple in receipt of parish relief.
Also with her on census night were her brother Richard, 19 year old
nephew John Steel, 51 year old lodger and widower Henry Gander
and his 25 year old son, Thomas Gander.
-
Henry Steel was born on 27 December 1801 and baptised on 22 January
1802 in Hurstpierpoint. He died between 1841 and 1851.
Henry married Ann Tucker at Holy Trinity in Guildford, Surrey on 30
August 1822.
Ann was born about 1804 in Guildford, Surrey. In 1851 she was a 47
year old widow and charwoman living at Cobbs Cross or Croft in
Hurstpierpoint, along with her brother-in-law Richard Steel, 27
year old lodger Walter Holman and 3 year old visitor Charles
Hunt.
-
Mary Steel was born on 23 February 1804 and baptised on 21 March
1804 in Hurstpierpoint.
-
Richard Steel was born on 18 January 1806 and baptised on 9
February 1806 in Hurstpierpoint. The baptism register recorded that
his father's name was also Richard, but I think this was a mistake.
When the 1841 census was recorded he was living with his parents. In
1851 he was an unmarried 45 year old agricultural labourer living with
elder sister.
-
William Steel was born on 25 January 1808 and baptised on 7
February 1808 in Hurstpierpoint.
-
Stephen Steel was born on 9 May 1810 and baptised on 10 June 1810
in Hurstpierpoint. In 1851 he was an unmarried 40 year old
agricultural labourer living with his widowed sister-in-law, Ann Steel,
at Cobbs Cross or Croft in Hurstpierpoint.
-
David Steel
was born on 20 May 1812 and baptised on 11 June 1812 in Hurstpierpoint.
He married Mary
Tulit in 1834. (They have their own page.)
-
Thomas Steel was baptised on 19 March 1815 in Hurstpierpoint.
-
James Steel was baptised on 31 May 1815 in Hurstpierpoint.

On searching the IGI for children of John Steel and Mary Goodwin,
it also listed children of John Still and Mary Hemsley who had
married on 17 April 1797 in Pyecombe. (It would seem the IGI considers Steel
and Still to be interchangable.)
John Still and Mary Hemsely had the following children:
-
Henry Still was baptised on 26 November 1797 in Pyecombe.
-
Mary Still was baptised on 2 May 1802 in Pyecombe.
