Richard STEDMAN (1764-?)
and Elizabeth BOX (1768-?)

Richard Stedman and
Elizabeth Box married
by banns on 19 July 1788 in Ardingly,
Sussex. They were
both of Ardingly and both made their X marks. The witnesses to their
marriage were
Thomas Stedman
and
Richard Creasy.
(They were not my direct ancestors. Elizabeth was the sister of my 4x
Great Grandmother, Sarah Box.)
Richard Stedman was baptised on 23 October 1764 in Balcombe,
Sussex. He was the son of
William Stedman
and
Mary Rice.
Richard may have been a witness to the 1788 marriage of Elizabeth’s
sister, Sarah and to the 1790 marriage of her sister Catherine.
Elizabeth Box
was born on 10 June and privately baptised
on 11 July 1768 in Ardingly. She was admitted into the Church on 24 July
or August 1768. She was the daughter of
5
77
John Box
(1732-1810) and
5
77
Hannah
Hames
(1737-1816).
Richard Stedman and Elizabeth Box had 5 known children:
-
Richard Stedman
was born on 24 November and baptised
on 26 December 1788 in Ardingly.
-
Sarah Stedman
was born on 14 November and baptised
on 28 December 1792 in Ardingly.
-
Mildred Stedman
was born on 27 April and baptised on 28 June 1795 in Ardingly.
-
Mary Stedman
was born on 26 November 1797 and
baptised on 14 January 1798 in Ardingly. Her father's name was
recorded as Edward Stedman in the transcript of the Ardingly
baptism register, but this was the only mention of an Edward at that time
and I think Richard's name was wrongly recorded. Mary died aged 1½
years and was buried on 5 June 1799 in Ardingly.
-
John Stedman
was born on 25 April and baptised on
25 May 1800 in Ardingly.
